I was listening to this lesson and found out that the neurotoxicity symptoms you described about snake venom, like ptosis and respiratory effects, are actually very similar to heavy-metal poisoning, especially mercury. I had mercury toxicity and I developed similar symptoms within a few months. The only difference between the two is the time frame; snake poisoning takes effect almost immediately, while the heavy metal poisoning takes a little longer to actually see the symptoms that slowly manifest as lethargy, before the actual symptoms. For instance, waking up tired in the morning (thyroid), way before the ptosis and respiratory symptoms.

Good presentation. Clear and precise. I have observed, when there is a regional lymph adenitis soon after a snake bite, it turns out to be a poisonous snake bite. We need not wait for blood tests etc. Please mark the words 'regional adenitis soon after'. It's wiser to start the antisnake venum before releasing the tourniquet. Even the test dose of antisnake venum might cause severe anaphylaxis. Better keep the adrenaline and Avil (Phenaramine maleate) loaded in separate syringes ready for emergency use. Even though the skin test dose is negative there is a possibility of getting anaphylaxis during IV infusion . Better do it very slowly in the begining and proceed fast. Dose of antisnake venum needs elaboration and management of complications too.

I used to be an amateur snake handler, a skill that I learnt to be able to identify snakes from their type of scales on body and structure of bony plates on head. This was the only way to confirm identity of the species from zoology texts fifty years back. For that it was necessary to have the snake in hand either alive or dead. As i saw no reason that the reptile must die so that a person can identify it, i learnt to catch alive, and release it after identification. Color and pattern of markings are generally indicative, but as these are variable, they cannot be depended upon totally. For example the Common Wolf Snake and the Common Krait both have similar white striping. In the process I got bitten about half a dozen times and also learnt the recommended first aid practices then written. They were , as you have described in the video, very different. Probably sometimes they did more harm than good. But atleast they gave some reassurance to the patient that something was being done! Wrote this to point out two things. Snake bites do not necessarily provide two distinct puncture marks. Sometimes it's just a single puncture or a scratch mark. The Wolf Snake though not poisonous, bites leave clear twin puncture marks, and they are quite willing to bite. I have experienced deep bites from an injured Banded Keelback a common grass snake and it left two bleeding punctures. So twin punctures are no proof that the bite is from a poisonous snake! Finally Krait bites create anaesthesia around the bite area. After the initial stinging sensation the patient reports no pain or discomfort at all. Even pinching hard near the site does not hurt. The effects show up 6 hours afterwards when he /she has acute pain in abdomen and the normal effects of neurotoxin venom sets in. Today I do not catch snakes as my reflexes have slowed, and I can recognise most common snakes at a glance. It's no great ability, just like most Bengalis identify fish species in the market without any need to count scales! Thank you for the update With best wishes,
