The first time I saw Big Boss transform as a kid and then heard that rocking music is one of my best NES memories. And to think, this was technically the game that kicked off the Metal Gear franchise; Metal Gear 2 wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for Kojima being sore about the two NES games. MG was pretty insignificant for the MSX, while the NES version was the one that was the one that sold well. The one that spawned a sequel. The one that was ported to other consoles. Once again, another third party franchise that kicked off thanks to Nintendo, yet third parties give Nintendo the honor of abandoning them.

I remember the music of this game really standing out to me back then. That jungle theme is awesome! Not only the catchy themes but the instrument voices (especially percussion) seemed to be a step up from the normal NES sounds, like they somehow tweaked it for more authenticity. Best I recall it seems SMB2 or SMB3 also had improved sound quality. When my house was broken into and all my NES games stolen Snakes Revenge is one game I missed most because I had only totally played through it once. Glad to get to see and hear it again on youtube. Hideo Kojima made Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake for the MSX only because he was asked by someone on the Snake's Revenge team if he please would make a sequel. And he did... Kojima, although having no involvement in this product, doesn't think Snake's Revenge is that bad of a game actually. The first Metal Gear for the NES however is an abomination... it's called Metal Gear but it doesn't even have a Metal Gear present in the game... X_X

***** the game is very clunky. The game (obviously having no idea what made the original so great) has a heavy focus on combat, due to the overall level design, and an incredible amount of cheap shots when going to the next screen. It also lacks in good controls,it took me five minutes to figure out the menu screen, and the way snake moves, makes it incredibly difficult to hit enemies spot on. The story is stupid as well, why is big boss a cyborg? Because of the explosion at outer haven? But I thought he escaped outer haven? The most aggravating thing are the 2D sections, they're un- immersive and frustrating since snake moves so slow and the level design is so weird and annoying. And also it's really annoying how when you die you lose all items you have collected and the only way to stop this from happening is to go to a checkpoint which aren't immediately obviousunless you die. And last but not least, the password system is a bitch, hard to write down, hard to remember, and takes forever to input. I know you kindof have to deal with then in old games but there are ways to make it easy for the player and this game doesn't try. It really is no wonder why hideo kojima says both the nes games are a stain on his reputation!

***** I heavily respect snakes revenge for creating metal gear solid, but,on to my next point,I didn't mind the clunky controls in the msx original because it really encouraged you run away rather than fight, now you still had to fight, but enemies moved in a way that,if strategic enough, you could pick them off, snakes revenge simply doesn't have that, enemies don't have a distinct pattern, they move to quickly, running away is almost never an option, and to top it all off, snake controls the exact same and the controls simply weren't made that way.
