The Smaller Quail Eggs seem to also catch the smaller snakes. As a Pest Control Company I mostly trap snakes in residential/urban areas. I relocate beneficial snakes. People don't understand the benefit of having snakes around your house or buildings. If you want to attract snakes leave your lights on so insects come to your window. The frogs will eat the Insects and the snakes will eat the Frogs, rats, and birds.

Great video. Based on title and content, obviously you're attempting (and succeeding) to trap snakes. The question I have is, which would you consider better as food in a survival situation: minnows and crawfish caught by the trap or snakes attracted to the minnows and crawfish? Obviously, in a survival situation, anything that can be eaten is "better". I'm just interested in your opinion on what is going to provide sufficient calories for relatively little calorie expenditure (i.e. processing the catch), is sufficiently palatable, easier/faster to cook, which is more likely to be caught first, etc.: minnows/crawfish or snakes?
@BobHansler
8 жыл бұрын
That is a complicated question. I can catch minnows and crawfish in higher volumes and more steadily than I can snakes. That being said, it is much easier to cook a snake over the campfire in a primitive situation than it is to cook a multitude of small fish/crustaceans. It would depend on the year and my surroundings. I recall a summer close to 2 decades ago where the water snakes were sunbathing in the hundreds pushing down the vegitation on the sides of the creek to make platforms that they were heaped upon... in that case I'd be eating snake : )

Bob Hansler Calm down hoss. I never called you a liar, so don't call me one. Maybe a baby rat snake I guess. But where I live I NEVER see baby Cotton Mouths on the rivers or streams and it takes a 5min trip to the river or stream to find one but they are all way to thick to fit into that thing. At least the ones here in NW Arkansas. Most Rat snakes we find around here are Texas Rat's it doesn't take them long to outgrow that hole. I could see your method working if the hole could be made larger maybe but then the bait/snake would escape right? I would love to see a video of you catching a Cotton Mouth in one of those. Prove me wrong I guess.
@BobHansler
8 жыл бұрын
Snakes, even large ones tend to find a way to get places we wouldn't likely figure they could. View the follow-up video. I'd love to play with some cottonmouths, but I have not come across any in a few years, the drought hit them pretty hard and populations have not returned just yet. For clarity, the quote I mentioned in my previous comment did not imply that you had called me a liar, but was referring to the change in perception and position that can occur over time as understanding and experience grow.

Bunker Jeremy It would depend on the size of snake you are atempting to trap. You'd be surprised at how a large snake can fit through a small hole. You can modify the holes to open them wider, Gees also sells a few variations with larger openings.

@BobHansler
8 жыл бұрын
+Christian Warrior Biologists use them when surveying ecosystems. Knowing what kinds of reptiles reside within an area gives a more complete picture of ecosystem health as well as biodiversity. Many people prefer to trap snakes around their residence to relocate instead of having feral cats kill everything indiscriminately, the traps are humane, which means you can actively remove those snakes that are potentially harmful and release those that are not. Some few would look at this as a potential source of food as larger snakes can provide an unconventional supply of meat... and yea, its also pretty cool )

Glad you cautioned how to not accidentally drown animals you might catch. In my state, the entrance holes can't exceed 1" to prevent juvenile turtles from getting in and you can't leave these unattended for the very same reason. I'm STILL looking for legal traps to catch edible size crayfish. So far, the collapsible crab trap with 18" max opening seems to be it. That should work right?

I was once fly fishing in a little southern California mountain creek and I watched a small/medium garter snake slither into the water and submerge itself completely, and then emerge a few seconds later with a 8" brown trout in its mouth. It then proceeded to battle the fish onto the bank and slowly ate it, all while the fish was flopping wildly. A lot of people (including me for many years) don't realize how aquatic garter snakes can be, although the one you caught looks to be different type/species than the ones I see out here.
