Everyone honed their own way , but the use of the Livi loom strop was a masterclass .

The first stone is very coarse (grit 300). I think the movement is made to break the overhoned edge left by the coarse grit.

There is a difference between a technique centered amateur and a professional. Most of us are in the former, but the customers of his razors generally have good things to say about the edges, and if they are not perfectly satisfied, there is not much to touch up. It's a lot like golf, when I asked a touring golf pro near me what shafts he had on his clubs. He recommended something else for me and said "what the pros do and what you do will be different things". Same is true here.

I have 3 Mastro Livi razors and they are all masterpieces. Mastro Livi is a true artist and craftsman and his razors attest to that. I marvel at how he puts such a keen edge on his razors so quickly. I have tried his palm stropping but nowhere as fast as he does it.

In the U.S. or Canada, go to Straight Razor Design. Don ordered mine. First go to Mastro Livi's web page-English and look at the options. You'll love Livi's razors.

Nothing wrong with the way he is honing, they are called half strokes. Only thing I noticed which didn't add up is the soaking of the coticule in water. A true master.

His method and his technique may be different than yours but that doesn't mean it doesn't work, look at the quality of the end product rather than judging the methods that you might not agree with. He is clearly able to create very well made razors, especially considering how many good reviews there are on his blades, including the overall craftsmanship and theblade itself.

Nice to see how a master in this art hones a razor. I'm very surprised by the last move on the first stone, at 00:20 ! I'd have thought this would ruin the edge. What is that for?

stone contamination, scrubbing... ahhhh

Rough Rooster Knife Sharpening I don't agree with throwing a bunch of different grit rocks in the same basin either when all of them shed grit as they work (well aside from that trans ark but that should be used with oil or solution anyway). By scrubbing I guess you mean halfstrokes. I don't mind that tactic on razors but only with specific blades and with specific stones in early goings. It's probably an awful approach for a new honer because it is a lot trickier to regulate your touch and you can have your bevel rocking on the stone without being aware if it is very hollow ground and flexible or wearing your spine excessively if you aren't mindful. It adds a lot of variables and takes control away to a point. As for the rest, believe it or not that is very old school european way of honing blades. They love their loom strops and pastes... The palm stropping I saw quite often as well as the brutal blade slapping style. The out of true hones... It is what it is... This video is pretty much as infamous as the Murray Carter one where he goes spine leading on 6k straight to newspaper strop then to crox. What he did was sort of a much less brutal version of this but it works for him. I personally go to like a 5k level maxed on synths before switching to naturals till I have a hht 4 or 5 before stropping I loathe paste edges. Ppl who take delivery of the blades livi fabricates and hone say they shave fine so there's that.

I really don't understand the appeal of these razors. His blades are ridiculously overpriced for what they are. The grinds look decent, but the finish on his products is mediocre at best. Seriously, he does spine work with an angle grinder and signs his name with an electric engraver. How can he justify cutting corners like that and still charging I've $1000?
@kcb5150
4 жыл бұрын
All these custom razor makers are highly subjective. I think a lot of the appeal with his stuff is that he was offering extra full hollows when many were offering nothing of the sort.
