Guys. Almost everyone who's into the tech space has watched enough videos at this point about how overhyped and under delivering these new chips are. I'm speaking from a real, potential customer's point of view, as I really hoped to buy one had they stuck their landing. But they didn't. Lack of software support (not everyone lives in the browser, mate), lack of hardware monitoring, lack of any useful usecase of the NPU (at least in my case), lack of an otherwordly battery improvement (the Ryzen laptops I was looking into anyways all had 10+ hrs of battery life; getting 15hrs really isn't going to budge me towards X-Elite), and the lack of a respectable GPU performance are just pathetic misses that NO ONE deserves to expect from a laptop that costs well upwards of $1.2k. Plus, performance per watt is nowhere near Apple's, so no one, not any reviewer, not Qualcomm themselves have the right to call this an "Apple moment for Windows". It's not the architecture/technology that is the problem. It's the lack of developer support, lack of a respectable operating system that is going to deter users away. Especially when you consider Strix Point is on the horizon, with almost just as good efficiency, and Lunar Lake later this year with on-par or even better efficiency. I say this as an electronics engineer myself. Watching an 18min ad of Snapdragon X-Elite seemed pointless, let alone write a gargantuan comment like this, but I felt the need to provide feedback for both Hardware Cunucks and Qualcomm.

@@HardwareCanucks I did watch this with someone else, but made the comment on my account. The start plugs ARM chips without any reference to what makes other chips better, and proceeds to push AI as a selling factor. Very few people care about AI and by the end of the year all rivals will have as good or better NPU. It was only behind the scenes deals that got Qualcomm first dibs on the AI. When advertising the chips variability from efficiency to performance, there was no mention of the diminishing returns on efficiency as the cores work harder. To the point where at peak performance its efficiency is miles behind Apple and close to Intel. Emulation: there are plenty of videos out there that show Prism is not as it was sold by MS. So the average loss of performance is 10-15% but many emulated apps are much less performant. GPU: is comparably poor no matter all the excuses you spoke about. When AMD arrives soon it will be >2X more performing in games. This is native, no tricks like resolution fixing. These tricks are also likely on other platforms. Linux. I heard that the bootloader is locked and if bootable Linux arrives it will be on dedicated machines. Battery Life. I have a Surface Pro 11 and no way it gets close to 17 hours. Around 8-10 doing office work. I do not know what your light load is but it's is extremely misleading. Why no mention of medium to heavy usage to be objective? NPU. As I said is not important and probably wont be for years. I see many returns as people realise that the marketing does not live up to expectations. Bestbuy had Samsung returns (already) selling at $450 off and new $350 off; HP at $200 off. People buying something as expensive a these want it to work out the box and not be good at one thing (efficiency in light loads), they want to do some gaming and heavy loads--all I heard was excuses--12 years in the making. I imagine if this was what Apple achieved then the take would be far more objective. Time will tell… Anyway I do not want to get into a war of words, but speaking for the average consumer, not a techie, these are best avoided for a few months, and that is surely what influencers should be saying. By then we will compare with AMD, M4 and Intel and an informed decision can be made. Also their pricing will have fallen to reflect their inferiority.

RISC vs CISC isn't the problem at this point, it is more the cruft on x86 supporting so much legacy crud and all of the decisions about where to optimize. Your claims about the instruction sets and AI workloads were a simple change in SoC design as shown by recent chips from AMD and Intel. There is a LOT more that goes into why Apple's Arm based chips are so much more efficient than Qualcomm's Arm chips for mobile for a decade. The older instructions in x86 are very rarely used and can be emulated in microcode instead of taking up space on the chip (not to mention that they wouldn't need to take much space anyway since they were on processors with much fewer transistors and larger process nodes) so it's not as big of an issue as you might think.

Do you think software emulation of older extensions is a good idea? A form of a sliding window approach to deprecate and simulate, while adding new native extensions. I’d argue that migrating to pure 64 bit and use emulated 32 bits could be the way to go. RISC-V is encountering the same bloating and fragmentation issues already. RV64GC is good enough imo, but others wanted custom instructions for NPUs and features that modern x86_64 enjoy.

This is a really (and under appreciated) point. A big part of Apple’s performance advantage on their laptop chips has been solely due to the fact that they’ve had a massive manufacturing advantage at TSMC. Intel has always been at least 1 process node behind, and usually 2, while AMD has been consistently 1 process node behind as well. The upcoming Strix CPU’s will be the first time Apple has faced competition from another chip made on the same process node. And I’m going to guess Apple’s efficiency advantage is going to get wiped out entirely and perhaps even be at a disadvantage. We’ll know for sure in a few weeks…

And the title 'Everything we didn't know' -- that leads one to believe there is some new or interesting finding that is not readily available from other sources. But then we learn that this video is sponsored by Qualcomm. I've already heard two reviewers say that Qualcomm cut parts of their product from the final uploaded video, including LTT. So obviously Qualcomm has tight control over sponsored content. They're surely not telling you what to say; but they also are seeing the video and approving it before you post it. In practice x86_64 chips are already built like risc chips. The reason arm chips are efficient is because they have been used and optimized for mobile for decades while AMD and Intel focus on servers and desktops with laptops mostly as an afterthought and never really had any sense of urgency in improving efficiency until Apple silicon. Don't take my word for it go watch Dr Ian Cutress' interview with Jim Keller.
@HardwareCanucks

I think one of the things you need to take into account is how the Ian / Jim interview was more slanted towards the Ai side of the market which is what TensTorrent focuses on. But also, I think that while current gen x86/64 chips have evolved to be more like ARM / RISC processors, its the instruction set complication that will always be a hindrance. Then again, just the amount of bloat Microsoft added to their Copilot PC's negates a lot of that inherent efficiency anyways.
@lycanthoss
2 ай бұрын
@@HardwareCanucks what instruction set complication are you talking about? The ISA has negligible effect on efficiency or performance. There is an interview article (I don't remember the name of the AMD person sorry) with AMD and they found IIRC ~5% efficiency difference when using ARM vs x86. The real reason mobile chips use ARM is because there is over a decade of R&D making efficient mobile chips on ARM. Why did they pick ARM to begin with? Probably because getting an ARM license is easier than getting x86. This is also why Apple used ARM for their M CPUs - they already had an ARM license and mobile SoC design from their iPhones. Even if Intel and AMD were interested in licensing x86 to new people, those people would have to deal with tons of legacy cruft (which doesn't really impact performance, but does make it harder to work on x86), whereas Intel and AMD have spent decades working on x86 and don't consider that legacy stuff to be too much of a problem. Let me repeat this to you - there is no inherent efficiency to ARM/RISC, or at least it is negligible.
@yensteel
2 ай бұрын
@@lycanthoss I find that doubtful. In an interview with the creators from Acorn, they were testing their early arm prototypes, and one chip managed to run without a power source, which puzzled them. It turns out that it was being powered by electrical leakage from the surrounding chips. It was originally running at 1 watt and could still run fine at 0.1 watts. The efficiency aspect is also due to the lower amount of circuits needed to make the chip yet it had higher performance than the Motorola 68020 while running at half the Mhz. They were simply more efficient because less circuits are needed. Acorn entered personal computing first with the Acorn Archimedes. Later, HP, IBM, and Sun Microsystems launched computers with risc, which used less power, but they gave up due to “less than impressive specs”. Apple created arm prototype Mac’s such as the mobius, but the project was killed. Apple at least used them in the newton, and later Nokia picked them up due to their efficiency. Throughout the entire history of risc personal computing and then to mobile devices, they always had the advantage of efficiency. Those early 1980s risc computers were actually focused on keeping up with performance and specs. It wasn’t that they were solely researched and designed to be efficient. Their design simply needed fewer circuits. RISC later found heir own territory with mobile devices. CISC’s strength is that they could saturate their complex circuits with continuous operations effectively.
@yensteel
2 ай бұрын
@@toast1797 Actually, it's factually wrong. The first arm prototype was accidentally found to run without a power source. The reason was that it was running off electrical leakage alone. Originally designed to run at 1 watt, it could go down as low as 0.1 watts while outperforming similar chips. Acorn, HP, IBM, and Sun all made Risc personal computers in the 1980s, but gave up due to "disappointing specs". All this time, they were pushing for performance, not efficiency. Their advantage was in reduced circuit requirements and efficiency but the market didn't care. Apple also prototyped a Mac with arm, and gave up. They later got integrated into the newton, and then the Nokia for their efficiency. The main difference between RISC and CISC is that Cisc can saturate their circuits more intensely to deliver mote performance at the cost of circuit complexity. It makes them easier to speed up early on.

Interesting yhat you started the video sayin you want accuracy and then went on to claim unfounded things about arm vs x86. The only arm device that beats x86 in efficiency is what is in apple silicon. But I have to ask myself, how much of that is apple having full control of the ecosystem, doing things that are not standard in the PC world (on-package memory, integrated ssd controller on die are at least two), using a more advanced process node than the rest and also blowing the transistor budget while integrating fixed-function accelerator blocks. For context, an m3 max soc as many transistors (92 billion) as a desktop ryzen cpu (16 billion for the 7950X) and a 4090 (76 billion and not even fully enabled) combined while beating neither in performance, and lets not even count the fact that there's an intersection between both the 4090 and the 7950x in functionality. Anyway, ARM being better or more efficient than x86 because of the ISA needs more than one data point for it to not be a controversial statement, let alone a fact. It is certainly not cheaper to manufacture because, again, the ISA is independent from the architecture that implements it. Well linux support means we might get external GPU support in Linux. Since Linux already has drivers to make GPUs work on ARM. But this isn't a revolution. It's one more option. the M series processors were better than I thought but It wasn't the runaway winner people said it was and even now it isn't quite there. ARM on desktop/laptop is proving to be viable but I feel like people are overselling it.

ARM is not more efficient than x86. This is a misconception that is very popular among people who look at the results only and not the reasons. Let's take Apple M1. When it launched, it had amazing performance for its power draw. Was it because it spoke a different language, or because it had 60% more transistors than a competing CPU, the Ryzen 7 5800U? Transistor count and transistor efficiency is everything. By packing more transistors, you can scale the performance up not by using the diminishing returns of higher voltage and power draw, but by the linearly scalable instruction execution pipelines, or in short - IPC. What does IPC stand for? Instructions per Clock. What is an instruction? It's literally how many instructions, from the ARM or from the AMD64 instruction sets, can be done each clock. Improvements in this area are achieved by doing more instructions in parallel, that are provided by the execution pipeline. And BECAUSE ARM is RISC architecture, instructions are not the same. An instruction on AMD64 might equate to several instructions on ARM. In the end each instruction is executed by a bunch of transistors. So you get more transistors = more instructions can be done at the same time. And if you want an efficient CPU - put as many transistors as possible in it, and make it run at low power. But that's not what's happening because transistors are expensive to make, so more transistors = more cost to manufacture. Snapdragon X Elite should have around 30B transistors, which is 3 times more than the Ryzen 7 5800U. Now look at performance numbers. Do they match? I haven't checked.

This is 100% accurate which is why theory is often different from reality ESPECIALLY when we're talking about an emulated environment. The efficiency of any given design lies just as much with the underlying operating system as it does with the chip(s) itself.

Aside from the criticism you're getting, I really really want RISC (RISC-V) processors to get fully compatible with windows ASAP. Cheaper, less power hungry processors sound amazing. Add an interpretation layer for x86 arch software and you're golden. I hope big editing software companies get apps lie Da Vinci Resolve working with it. Pro editing, note taking, video watching, web browsing, everything except gaming and I'd be happy with a laptop that sips power and the battery lasts days. Apple has been dunking on windows over this one key market for almost a decade now.

Problem with ARM processors and Windows laptops isn’t the architecture……it’s software support from Microsoft. When Apple moved its lineup to ARM, APPLE provided the translation for software running x86 to ARM. This made it seamless for developers that already have invested time creating software, to finish their current project and release it without having to worry about compatibility. Then when they have future releases, they can make those into the correct architecture. Microsoft isn’t doing that. They are the platform holder. If they’re not going to make it as seamless as possible for developers, then the developers aren’t going to do that. There’s no incentive there. Most customers are going to buy these laptops, not knowing that the software they currently use, won’t be compatible. On top of that, with AMDs Ryzen AI series of CPUs coming out to have 50 TOPS of AI performance, snapdragon will already be second place mere months after release date. @@omegajvn1 I get what you mean. At least Microsoft pushed all of the developer toolkits out for companies to use, but getting unreal and unity to compile for arm seems convoluted. Direct x 12 support was also missing. They’ve been preparing for about a decade now. Microsoft made the mistake I mentioned for the windows phone and first arm surface, which was why they failed. They didn’t push enough support nor partnerships, they were still using their windows OS business model. It feels like they only got the big companies coordinate for now. It’s all relative. My pov is that if arm windows completely fails, Microsoft still has their x86_64 ecosystem. Apple in comparison, had to commit a lot more effort to push support and tools since their entire Mac ecosystem depended on it. Apple made the transition look easy, despite the preparation behind it. Both companies had to make themselves legally defensible against Intel and AMD as well.

Holding off a review for accuracy or integrity when these products IIRC came out almost a month ago (ex. Surface Laptop released and had pre-orders on June 18th) says a lot about the product. A rule of thumb is to wait for reviews, and if you, the reviewer has made all this spiel about waiting for updates/bios, accuracy of measurements, then NO ONE should be buying this product. And that means, the product has NOT DELIVERED. And as for the sponsoring thing, sure I get it. But to some, just feels like pandering from company. There isn't that much of a reason to hold a review, which you can clearly make an updated video on. Either way, if the first video sets a precedent of mediocrity, it's still the same as letting a review sit and wait while the rest of the pc hardware circle has already driven the mediocrity narrative. First impressions has already done its rounds and you can't take that away from the consumer mindset. Whatever happens in the next 6 months we already now SD X Elite has great battery life/standby/efficiency. Software compatibly issues, surprise, is short term (Arc for example has been progressing well). But that doesn't take away from all these performance marketing claims that is just mediocre and that just hangs with Phoenix/Hawkpoint or Meteor Lake when it is soon to be considered last gen.

Poor reviews of the Fisker Ocean killed it and the company. Could they have gone on a bit longer, they would have fixed the software. It's a shame. VW delayed their ID.3 for years because the software acceptable. Fisker needed to launch, because they didn't have the pockets of VW. Seems like by now the Ocean isn't that bad, but it won't get any better. On the other hand, yes, when you buy a product it doesn't matter if in future it will be better. It might not. I can understand both sides. In any case, first impressions matter a ton. Who watches a follow up video if the initial video says the product is horrible? People will lose all their interest.

You know what's funny? Every major tech channel has been producing sponsored content regarding these devices. When you want to make an actually informative piece about a product you cannot have the manufacturer be your sponsor and I don't mean just for this video I mean in general. As soon as you're sponsored, even if it's not the video directly you're going to be influenced by it. And besides, like Jim Keller said, whether a chip is RISC or CISC really makes no difference. What weighs x86 down is the huge legacy instruction sets that are still in modern chips. ARM is moving towards the same issue with a bloated and inefficient instruction set in the comming years. Stop pretending like a move to ARM based architectures will fix fundamental issues with how Windows is handling things.

Ultimately people can make whatever content they want when given sponsored money. We simply CHOOSE not to make a video that feels like a review or one where we give opinion or even purchase recommendations about the product being discussed. I've been a long-term Apple user who is beginning to tire of Apple's products and antics. And it's not hardware as that's fantastic. It's their operating systems that cripple products such as M series iPad Pros or prevent you from having modern touch UI with intrinsic stylus support on MacBooks. I've been using Windows 11 arm on a Windows Dev Kit 2023 daily for past 18 months, have experienced the improvements in OS, drivers and emulation and become a fan. So, I welcome the appearance of Qualcomm X series processors and Co Pilot+ PCs as it helps drive competition in the Windows / Linux PC space and that benefits us end users.
