+Snapper Fishing Tackle when making the uni knot, when you made the 2nd loop did you run the tag in through the 1st loop you made to form the 2nd loop it seems like you did but I couldn't tell? Or was it just above the 1st loop to the side?

Mate do you drop your bait almost onto the bay floor or do you suspend it in the water column using your finder for depth?
@ReedysRigs
8 жыл бұрын
yea mate away's on the Floor but i always anchor , Snapper 95 Perecent of the time are on the Bottom , most the time if there up in the water column there moving somewhere else .. if your offshore and cant anchor then it may be worth driftting floating them down , i say close to the bottom as possible ... finding a reef & try to drift along the edge not over it ... all takes practice. Best of Luck

How do you hook the bait with the hooks?
@talbotbid011
5 жыл бұрын
Why not snell the bottom hook as well? Is there a reason you prefer the bottom hook "loose"?
@ReedysRigs
5 жыл бұрын
Because the thinkness of the knot damages soft baits such as sardines ... Is one reason
@MrAuldphart
4 жыл бұрын
Is there a need to snell the second hook? I would think that as long as the second hook is threaded on the line it can't go anywhere and when hooked on the bait, the line pulls straight rather than having a loose loop hanging on the side, Am I wrong by saying this?
@ReedysRigs
4 жыл бұрын
No you do not have to, but I like this method as it sets the hooks better ..

hey mate, how do you attach this rig to main line if its braid? do you use a swivel at the top and then from swivel go to more leader and then tie leader to braid?
@ReedysRigs
6 жыл бұрын
Luke Walsh mate depends where Ur , fishing , if it reefy, or current moves Fast, maybe add a swivel then do a double uni not , but if not just use a swivel like you said ,
@mufc1015
5 жыл бұрын
Luke Walsh you basically just tie the main line on your reel to go the top circle of the swivel using a fairly decent knot and then tie your leader to the bottom circle of the swivel. Does that make sense? If not let me know I’ll try help you out

5/0 Suicide/Octopus hooks are good for smaller snapper, but you'd probably wanna go for 6/0 or 7/0 for 55+ cm sizes. I don't know why so many people use 60lb leader, I've brought 75+ sizes in on 20lb leader. That's what I do land-based with no issues. Big snapper easily rip baits off smaller hooks and you cannot hook them because of the thickness of the jaw - unless of course it swallows it (which many times they don't).. They're more likely to take it down and swallow it the fresher the bait is... Always keep the point of the hook exposed even which J Hooks, and don't pile too much bait into the gape.
@ReedysRigs

the reason people use heavily leader is because snappers teeth can rub though 20lb pretty easy , & also if you hook on to say a gummy shark or big mulloway , you can still catch it . most people change there tune once you have lost a big fish , As for hook sizes in reality most snapper are not big you cant say i want to target fish over 55cm it simply dosent work like that . a good quality 4/0 & 5/0 will is catch fish up to 10kg while still giving you options to catch small fish . you can catch big fish on small hooks but not small fish on big hooks .. the rig fishes fine for landbased have caught many snapper on this rig .
@MrDeadSea777
7 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you've caught plenty on that rig. Maybe they take it different in your area, because I've missed out on so many big fish when using the 4/0 hooks that I just gave up on them altogether. It's a shame because like you said, you do miss out on a lot of other species when using the bigger hooks - just a few days ago I caught' a 40 cm bream but I could have caught 5 if I used smaller hooks. Problem is that in my spot... we don't get a lot of small snapper, they're usually 60 +... so it's either I rig up for big snapper or smaller fish... gets frustrating at times.. because you don't know what to do. One night my mate and I were getting huge bites for 3 hours straight and we could not set a single hook.. we tried EVERYTHING - long traces, short traces, mullet, pilchard, prawn, heavy sinkers, light sinkers, weightless baits... finally my mate hooked one... saw it about 15 meters out thrashing about in 1 meter of water.... was a huge knobby... 30 seconds later it threw the hook.. Ever since then I use small fresh baits (prawn) on big hooks (6/0) and I get them about 80% of the time. In the shallows, they won't swallow the hook straight away, they'll run with it for a bit, and if they get scared they'll drop it...

standard hook choice around Australia for people to use to catch snapper are 4/0 or 5/0 hooks if your targeting bream whiting and small fish then i would say use a #4 or #6 to a 1/0 .. unfortunately there is not one size fits all ... when you include bream and smaller fish ..
@mrdeadsea7779

Yeah all except for the Maori fishos in Moreton Bay, they use 6/0 to 8/0 hooks and catch them all the time... snapper specialists...
