This video shows a snapping turtle briefly visiting the nest. The Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) is widespread throughout New Hampshire. It’s a large turtle easily identified by its large size, massive head, and long tail. This species can get up to 70 pounds! Because of its size, snapping turtles can be a threat to loon chicks; however, there have not been any documented cases of snapping turtles predating adult loons.
At the beginning of the video, you can see the male on the nest looking curiously at the water as if he senses something below. It is possible the male loon heard the turtle approaching because loons have excellent hearing. The snapping turtle climbs onto the raft, but the male loon shows no sign of being threatened. This goes to show that despite how powerful snapping turtles are, they are not a predator to adult loons. While the male loon was not threatened, he was slightly concerned and ruffled his wings. This short display successfully scared off the turtle.
