I am in my 60's and started trapping only 17 years ago. Other than a mandatory trapper education class to get my trapping license, I really had nobody to show me the ropes. There aren't many trappers in my area so I attended seminars given by one of our two State trapping organizations, NJ Fur Harvesters, and I paid a guy $100.00 for full day of running his line with him and learned a lot of his methods. And then of course, there's KZitem! I want you to know that this video with the boot-made beaver slide and castor mound got me my first two snared beaver this year! Although beaver are plentiful in my area, NJ has a ridiculously restrictive permit system and grants only 200 permits per year for the entire State. We are also broken into zones and where I live there are only 8 permits available. It's a huge area too, spanning over three counties. This year was the first year I got a permit after trying for 5 years or so. I used your boot method in the State woods near my house and got my fist beaver. I used your method and dressed up an existing slightly used beaver slide that I found. I used a blow-down as an anchor tree and set my snare with the bottom of the loop just touching the water. After 5 days I caught a 50 lber. ! The second beaver was caught on a stream bank at a friend's property where he just noticed beaver activity not more than a month ago. I looked at the site and there was very little sign, just a few small trees recently chewed and no noticeable slides. I was there after work and had my snare gear but no waders so I just stuck my work boot in the water and started slinging mud. I told him about your video and how everything I was doing was all supposed to work. He looked at me like I was crazy. I had to fence down each side of the snare with cut vegetation since the bank was mostly bare. I had my own doubts too since this was my first year trapping beaver. The next morning at 8:30 he called and said "Come get your beaver!" We were both amazed at the quick results. Thank you for putting your videos out there Dale. I used your skinning video too to successfully skin both beaver. I fleshed and boarded them at a NJ Fur Harvester workshop last week.👍👍

I’ ve used snares for beavers a lot. After speaking to Dale and watching his videos, I’ve also switched to 5/64 7x7 cable, in-line swivels and 8-10 extensions. Since I do a 24-hour check, having a live beaver is fine. The longer extension length gets the beaver in the water or high up on the bank. In either case, they’re not stressed at all. @@billingsleybrandtrappinglu1531 I didn’t know what your thought process was but it smells exactly like an old rank beaver when you flop it up on the skinning table. Most beaver lures smell like various castor from different parts of the country but this one smells like the beaver.

I'm in MO too. I hang beaver snares off trees in the wateror sticks around as a big around a ball bat half half out of the water. Smear lure on the stick/tree. Works best if there's some natural guiding around but can work without too. It's charlie Dobbins set I think. I use it year round

Lets say you catch 3 beaver out of 1 crick and then your action slows but you know there are more beaver there . Do you continue to use castor base lure or do you change your lure out? Or do you go to different sets all together? Your set mimics what I do for beaver with either snare’s or foot holds. When I snared them I didn’t use that long of a snare and maybe that’s why my action would slow. Thanks for the videos Dale and looking forward to taking lessons from you.

Thats 1 reason why I advocate setting so heavily Chris. Take them out fast before they have the chance to get waspy on you. Also why I advocate against conibears and drowning sets too. If they get waspy and quit responding to your sets then yes change lures and setting procedures. Or pull for a week or so and let things settle down. Then hit them again
