Snipatuit Brook is one of two drainages from Snipatuit Pond in Rochester, MA. Snipatuit Pond is a "Height of Land". It drains both South, into Buzzards Bay through the Mattapoisett River, and North into the Assawompsett complex of lakes, then down the Nemasket River to the Taunton River and into the Atlantic at Fall River. Snipatuit Pond (translation "Hard Bottom") was a nexus of travel for the Native Americans. Summers were spent at the ocean and winters inland. The route up the Mattapoisett to Snipatuit Pond then out Snipatuit Brook could be used to access the upper reaches of the Taunton River with portage to the North River and Boston Harbor, thereby cutting off a lot of open ocean travel.
Many years ago Snipatuit Brook was navigable, and quite often used for travel. Today it is impassible over much of its length. However, it is still viable for the passage of much water and plays a role in the health of the Herring population of Snipatuit Pond.
