The sugar is to temper the acidity of the canned tomatoes. The better the quality of tomatoes, the less acidic they will be.

I suggest buying a container of bay leaves to keep in the cabinet. They really make a difference, even though they seem minimal. I'm glad you made the sauce from scratch here, but my heart sank when Kevin put the meatballs in without crushing the tomatoes first... 😅 I like buying whole canned tomatoes because you can control the texture. You can crush them for a chunky sauce, or puree them to your liking. And they're better quality too over buying crushed/diced, as Bryn said. I'm glad you enjoyed your dinner however and tried making your own sauce! I hope you try it more often; it really is better than buying jarred sauce in my opinion 😄

In defense of buying whole tomatoes and then crushing them yourself…in the packaging process the better quality tomatoes go to the cans of whole tomatoes, then diced, then crushed, then pureeed. I’m sure it doesn’t matter but once I learned that I just bit the bullet and crushed my own.

gosh this looks soo good, and yes im a snoop dogg fan as well as spaghetti and italian food lover, i used to buy whole peeled tomatoes, crush them with my hands, i simmered pork chops (with the bones), oregano, mexican seasoning, green peppers and onions into a mexican pork stew, it was sooo good. growing up, me and my mom would make our own homemade meat sauce, basically browning hamburger meat, then adding in our fave pasta sauce ( ours were usually prego, bertolli, classico, and newman's own) my mom passed away in january this year. she really was a awesome cook and baker.

OMG Kevin you’re committing the cardinal sin by breaking the spaghetti 🤣🤣. Looks good and glad you had to make the sauce from scratch, pity you didn’t think it tasted better than store bought. I’d remove the meat from the sauce and add the spaghetti straight from the boiling water directly to the sauce, so it doesn’t stick. The meatballs I’d eat separately with a veg. Thanks for the recipe and review.

@@emilybilbow4990It is. Was given a jar to try. I typically make my own to control ingredients. Anything in a can or jar has chemicals in it to keep it shelf stable. You should never break your spaghetti. And you should crush your tomatoes with a potato masher. And as someone else said homemade sauce is better than store bought. The other thing you could do is buy a jar of just plain sauce and doctor it up using your own spices. Now that would be a good pot of spaghetti. And I should know as I am Italian. And I learned to make spaghetti from my Italian grandmother.😮

Im glad the recipe says not to beeak the pasta and that you guys followed it - my biggest pet peeve is when people cut their pasta! Even if im not eating it lol idk its one of those quirks with me.. Im a twirler I like long noodles. The least break it up on your plate, don't break it before cooking. Give the pasta it's chance to shine! Anyways love when you guys do Snoops Recipes! I would probably use the whole tomatoes too and just crush them in the process.. Maybe it has more vitamins? Lol. With loads of parm cheese for me. Looks good!
