Two Step in Captain Cook (South of Kona)
There are tide pools and a few small sandy areas that are great for kids to play. Most of the "beach" is lava rock so bring sturdy water shoes. There is one single spot in the entire area that you can hang a hammock. The bay has amazing topography and you can explore at many depths. Spinner dolphins can sometimes be found in the deep areas past the coral. One of the few places you can easily swim with wild dolphins for free on the island.
We ended our day with a short walk through Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park, which is right next to the beach. You could easily spend a couple hours here.
If the beach parking is full ($5), people often leave their car at the National Park ($20). There is free parking at the beach as well but it's very limited.
