This is an edit from about 30 minutes of snorkeling off Queen's beach, the Waikiki MLCD (no take/no fishing zone). We went out a bit towards the ewa side, past the swim buoys, and then followed the reef edge towards Diamond Head. We returned along the same route. The reef edge is very shallow and even exposed at low tide, so this is the best route if snorkeling or swimming (obviously, at your own risk!).
I consider this to be one of the most impressive places on Oahu, up there with Hanauma Bay and Pupukea - there are TONS of fish, in particular predators like 'omilu and barracuda (kaku in Hawaiian). This is despite the fact that the coral is mostly dead (sadly). The visibilty is usually pretty iffy; if there is even a little surf, visibility goes to near zero. There were many types of fish, some of which I label in the video. The 'omilu in particular don't show up well against the cloudy blue water. When I was in the water they were quite impressive but cameras are not as sophisticated as our eyes and brains and they blend right in. But you can be sure there were a LOT of them, even if they don't show up well.
If nothing else, this area is vivid proof of the success of a no take zone. 25 years of protection has been very effective, even on an unhealthy reef, for the fish at least. The fish are large and there are a lot of them. Even if you snorkel inside the reef in very shallow water you will find a lot of fish, especially humuhumunukunukuapua'a, kala, various surgeonfish, and butterflyfish.
