Wow, this was one of the best youtube videos I have ever seen--I felt like I was right along for the ride. Thanks so much for the time and effort in filming it and glad everyone had such a great time. So nice to see the dogs having fun in the snow. I had 2 goldens and a yellow lab, and I used to take them on summer/winter adventures in mountains of Eastern Arizona--it was their nirvana, and I still smile when I see the pictures or just think about all the fun we had. Fantastic job!!

My wife and I have owned 18 Subaru wagons starting with a 1981 1.6 liter . I have driven them all over the country in ALL weather..sleeping in my "metal tent" to -28F in the Adirondacks. They WERE incredible and I have MANY crazy stories. Our last was a pair of 2003 Foresters ... in 05 or 06 Fuji Heavy Ind. sold Subaru to Toyota. I have no idea how good the newer ones are...but its a HELL of a legacy (no pun intended) .

That was pretty cool video once again. I like to watch your stories as you know. And what I really like is snow digging with a car. Maybe you can try to go as a first vehicle to go further it to mountains. Subaru has two big advantages - 1) independent suspension, so you have better ground clearance that it looks like in snow because if you hit the "belly" as we say, you suspension can flex litle and get some grip. Thats something you dont have with axle suspension. And 2) is the weight of a car. As I wrote before I had a Pajero (Montero or Shogun) and on the same snow I have more trouble with it that with Subaru Legacy. Mitsubishi was still digging and doing really hard work to get there. Subaru was just flying over. And finnaly I'm really glad that your channel is going bigger and grows. Your video is definitely worth it!

On those smaller branches save your chainsaw battery by using a small hatchet or a machete. I keep an Ontario SP58 in my kit for that purpose and often to process the wood into smaller slivers or pieces for feathering. Wood processing is a lot of work but so gratifying after your fire starts burning. Your photography skills are incredible as you captured the reality of traversing in snow and the problems it can present.

@softroadingthewest
4 жыл бұрын
I'm a fan of GMRS. I have a Midland 105 mounted in my car. I like it because I never have to worry about batteries or recharging, I can't misplace it (like I always do with handhelds), the range is largely adequate for convoy comms, the sound quality is excellent, it will communicate on some of the same channels as the cheap FRS handhelds that most people carry, and there is no antenna tuning to muck around with (unlike a CB which I've read can be pretty finicky). A license is required to operate a GMRS radio, but there's no test, and it's just $70 for a 10-year license, which covers everyone in your family who might use the radio. The other problem with CB is that almost no one has them these days. I know maybe two people with CBs, but dozens who carry FRS handhelds. (I wasn't actually using my GMRS radio in this video; Ed had distributed his non-FRS handhelds to a few other guys and they were operating on a channel my radio couldn't access, so I just used one of Ed's as well.)

I am an Extra Class HAM, but when traveling to a remote location...usually to play radio...i always have a Garmin inreach mini...which relies on the iridium satellite network...and it will get through in an an emergency and the most basic plan can be turned on an off monthly...the 2 Meter band and HF 20 and 40 Meter bands are useful in places beyond reach of cellular networks, but...you can't always rely on someone hearing you or the atmosphere being right...Same is true of GMRS...at best with a repeater and you kicking 50 watts...with your car antenna...maybe get 30 to 50 miles...🤔🤷♂️ definitely recommend Garmin inreach mini...

I actually like that you discuss airing down so much, its free and it makes big gains in multiple places. Comfort and traction. Would like to hear what pressures you actually drop down to in certain situations, you didn't seem to mention how low you go. I've dropped as low as 18 or 20psi if the road was so covered you couldn't see it. that was using studded winter tires going over passes on road trips before. rally/ gravel tires will go down to 10-15psi no problem ,thanks to the crazy think sidewalls, but they do debead that low when you start making silly mistakes and driving too aggressive.
@softroadingthewest
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I try to remember to mention what I'm airing down to but I did neglect to provide that detail. I don't remember but I think I was probably around 23 psi as I knew I would be doing a mix of some "higher speed" highway driving (well, ~35 mph on the packed snow/ice) plus some tame trails. I'd normally go right down to 15-18 psi just on a snowy trail at lower speeds. I've been taking them down to 12 on sand. Usually around 23-25 on basic gravel/forest service roads, and 18 on more challenging "off road" terrain. Thanks, BTW, for appreciating the air-down. I've had SO many people poo-poo my habit of airing down, but man...it's so helpful.

Do you have any issues with those dewalt lithium batteries dying when it’s cold? I use them for my ice fishing auger and have to take a heated cooler to put them in. I’ve noticed that once the temps get anywhere between 10 degrees to about -20 degrees you can use the battery for about two minutes then it’s dead anything under -20 degrees and they don’t even work.
@softroadingthewest
4 жыл бұрын
Good question...I've not actually tried them fully cold. If I recall correctly, on this trip I think I was carrying the saw inside the car so it was always reasonably warm each time I needed to use it. Lately I've made a home for it up in my roof box, so I'll have to see how it fares up there this winter. I wouldn't have even have thought of that, although yeah, it's true that my camera batteries are a total headache when it's cold outside and I have to keep cycling them into my pockets to keep them warm. I suppose I could just keep the Dewalt battery in the car even if the saw is in the box.

I’m still wondering what the secret is to your stove. I have the same stove as you have and run the same sterno fuel as you do, but I’m having trouble cooking with it in temperatures in the low 30s Fahrenheit. I do carry a backup MSR whisperlite, but the convenience of the Coleman stove can’t be beat. Are you using hand warmers to pre heat the butane canister?
@softroadingthewest
4 жыл бұрын
I seem to be fine down to around 30°, but below that the butane delivery slows way down. When it's cold, I keep a cannister in the sleeping bag with me at night so I can make coffee in the morning, and cooking dinner on cold nights I've had to do a ridiculous routine of keeping one cannister tucked into my coat while cooking with another one, then swapping them out when the first one gets too cold, warming that one up in my coat so I can swap it back again when the second gets too cold...LOL. Now that I've discovered how much I love winter camping, I'm actually in the process of making some changes to my cooking setup. You'll be seeing some of that very soon. :-)

I run a Midland 105 GMRS radio in my car. I love it because it communicates with the handheld FRS walkie-talkies most people I know use on the trail, but no worries about batteries or charging or absent-mindedly setting the thing down in some random spot and then being unable to find it when I urgently need it, LOL. Operating a GMRS requires an FCC license, but there's no study/test, it's just $70 for 10 years, and the license covers anyone in the family who happens to operate the radio. In this particular video, when I met up with the guys, some of them didn't have radios so Ed provided handhelds, but they were not tuned to FRS/GMRS frequencies so I ended up using one of Ed's handhelds instead of my GMRS radio.

I moved my DIY awning (with the tarp and the legs) to the rear of the car to cover my kitchen area, and added the real awning along the side (picked it up used for very little money). You can see both deployed in a couple of my recent videos: kzitem.info/news/bejne/tmeC0GZrf2mjfW0 and kzitem.info/news/bejne/t3ePl6KFhJahmZw In this case, as it was late when we arrived at camp and I wasn't going to be doing any cooking, I didn't bother with the large rear awning. I have no experience with that car so I can't advise. But I'm a firm believer in "the best rig is the one you have." 90% of the National Forest and BLM roads I encounter, I could drive in my mom's Toyota Camry. You can get out and experience the backcountry wilderness without necessarily driving the worst possible unmaintained primitive roads as I sometimes do. You have AWD and probably a reasonable amount of ground clearance...you could go nearly anywhere I have gone. For further inspiration, check out my friend Shawn's channel, @silver_rd1. That's the silver CRV that shows up in some of my videos. His CRV is front wheel drive and he pretty much goes anywhere I go, the only exceptions being the most extreme challenging trails. Take a look at what he does without even having AWD or 4WD. I'm sure your Santa Fe will take you further than you think. Best way to find out is just to get out there. Just turn back when the going gets too rough. I do that ALL the time.

I do like that the subaru is capable but that f250 weighs twice as much as that little car so yes its going to get stuck faster. Had it been the lead vehicle breaking snow i bet it would have ran into similiar issues as the others. Still cool they were out but geez that looks super cold!!

If you had to get get an other Subaru which one would you get?

If I had to get something other than an SH Forester, I'd probably look at the first-gen (SF) Foresters. I loved them from the moment Subaru came out with them, plus you can find them with low range transfer cases.

Wondering how you stay warm in the Subaru and how do you deal with condensation?

I have a 0° sleeping bag which works wonders. Quite comfortable some degrees below freezing. Sleeping with a stocking cap on helps a ton as well. I have very little issue with condensation when camping in the Cascades or central Oregon (my usual destinations) - the air is on the dry side which seems to help. I keep 3 or 4 windows cracked open when I sleep as well.

I curious what your honest opinion is about that battery powered Dewalt chainsaw is? Been thinking about getting one, just not sure if they’re worth it.

Omigosh I absolutely love it, honestly. This was a purchase, not a sponsored item. Actually it was my dad who researched it and got it as a birthday present for me after watching one of my videos where I cleared a road with an axe. I was skeptical at first that a cordless electric chainsaw could do much of anything at all, but it works astonishingly well, and runs incredibly long on a charge. It's nice that I don't need to carry another messy fuel container, and the chainsaw itself doesn't stink like a gas chainsaw. I carry the charger in the car hooked up to an inverter so I never have to worry about it dying when I need it, though usually a single charge will carry me through an entire weekend of clearing downed trees on the road and cutting firewood. Plus there is never any worry about trying to get a finnicky 2-stroke gas engine started. I am absolutely thrilled with this little saw.

Get an MSR rocket stove to heat up water. That butane stove probably took forever to heat that water up. Forever. I need a camp stove (as I recently learned) to cook, but a camping micro rocket or pocket rocket stove is phenomenal for heating up water fast. You will need a different fuel can (for $10). But it is worth it.

Actually that little butane stove brings my little kettle to a boil remarkably quickly. As long as it's not too too cold out. When it drops too far below 30° it slows way down. I'm in the process of making some changes to my kitchen though. Sneak peek video should be out this weekend!

Fun video, and thanks for all the motivation and education to get out there. Donald - random question - when did you change your lights/light bar up front? And why? Maybe I missed that video...
@softroadingthewest

I don't know that I've specifically discussed it, it's been sort of a slow evolution. I initially took the bumper bar off after damaging it doing something stupid (see that in Shasta Part 2). I've since repaired it, but since I'm *hoping* I can manage to do a custom bumper this year, I haven't bothered to reinstall it. The two pairs of lights I was running on that bar were next to worthless on the trail so this was ultimately providing me very little benefit. I now have the Auxbeam light bar on the roof (which I love) and I am thinking to integrate some additional lights down low in front as part of a custom bumper build...if I can make that happen. :-)
