I wonder if they ever had anyone fall off the chairs. I remember riding it with my grandparents and I sat on my grandpa‘s lap and there was no crossbar no seatbelts nothing!! that was in about 1966, we have pictures of us just getting to the top of the mountain.

I rode that many times in the 1970s. Needless to say much has changed.

But if you think about it, the gap between the mountain and the lift never grows, just the view in the background. Doesn't look like you ever really get more than 25-30 feet from the ground because obviously the mountain is rising as well.

The chair isnt nearly as high off the ground as the pictures make it seem. Its all about perspective. And ive never been on a chairlift that had restraints. How would one get one and off?

So what people do (and you see this a lot in Australia) is they pull the safety bar down at the start and then towards the end of the ride you pull the safety bar up again.

You obviously don't travel much because there are many skylifts like this still in US, Europe and Asia still today. You sound like a bitter person, engaging in that romantisation of an imaginary past btw. People haven't changed since the times of Homer, thousands of years ago; let alone in just 50 years, which is the blink of an eye. I hope you can find the way out of that miserable state of mind.

What is the deal with everybody making a big deal about this? I read an article talking about the chairlift of death. Good grief! I have never ridden a lift at a ski resort that had any kind of restraints of any kind. How the hell would you get off of it if you had a restraint? Did somebody change something recently? Lawyers got involved? I guess it has been a few years since I skied.

There are several posts circulating that have still pictures showing only the rider with the city in the background, and a title that says "1500 feet with no restraints." It doesn't show the trees or the (I'm guessing) 40-foot drop all the way up the hill. The posts are designed to make it seem like there was a 1500 foot drop if you slipped off the chair. People are gullible.

Not fake. This video/film was taken by my grandfather Neil Rafferty. He was the General Manager for Snow King and he actually was the one to come up with the idea and take it to a few others and they started the ski area. I rode it numerous times, summer winter all year long. But by the time I came along the lift had double seats and our dog would ride on one side while I rode on the other.
