Look at the old BBC drama Merlin and you see all this nonsense starting long long ago with the fabled Guinevere being a rather ordinary looking actress of African extraction and the theme was a bizzarre reimagination of the times of this myth. You can see the positive creativity being crushed by the messaging and inability to understand past times from a dogmatically contemporary viewpoint. Arthur had banned magic and Merlin never revealed who he was up to the end and the series went absolutely nowhere endlessly repeating this theme. It is difficult to see any ruler in that era seeing magic as some separate state and all life to a Celtic druid or opposing Saxon was magic. When some Saxon King met with St. Augustine he had the meeting in open air as he feared the Saint's magic would be too overpowering indoors. No great surprise Waller-Bridge emerged from this BBC which is a media company with no need to work for revenue with the criminal law courts enforcing the subscription, hence no care about its public's viewpoint and it is very much a darling of the utterly detached ruling elite in the UK.

Technically, Snow White actually did improve her career by marrying the Prince BTW. She went from being a Princess to a Queen. So she actually had the best of both worlds. She loved someone AND had the highest career in the land at that time. The people they’re getting to write these shows apparently don’t understand the concept that you can fall in love and have a family and still have an important job. Kings and Queens didn’t give up their important jobs after having children. They basically had a battalion of nannies, etc. to help them. My cousin is young, in his early 20s and he’s getting married. Both he and his fiancée recently graduated college and they’re not giving up having careers. 😅 I don’t understand Hollywood people. There’s lots of people who fall in love and that doesn’t mean they no longer pursue education nor careers. Actually having a spouse can help make you more successful because it’s no longer just you-and I say this as a single. I’ve gotten hurt (dislocated my shoulder), gotten sick, and just day to day chores-they all would have been easier to handle if I wasn’t single.

This is what I don’t understand. Rachel keeps talking about the original movie being focused on love and how that’s snow whites entire character function, but when you look at the film, that’s not the content at all? The movie is called Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, not Snow White and the Prince??? The Prince is so largely inconsequential to the story that he doesn’t even have a name. She expresses a desire for love in the opening scene, but 1) it isn’t superfluous and totally makes sense; she is an abused orphan who is living in a toxic household and her wanting love is her wanting to be treated like a human, so it’s something that’s developed in her character and makes sense/is appropriate for the production “and I’m dreaming of, the nice things he’ll say.” Then the Prince appears and sings a song, but we don’t see him again until the last five minutes of the film- so in the very beginning and then at the very end. What’s more- Snow White never mentions the Prince *ever* after seeing him until the Dwarfs ask her to tell them a true love story and she sings Someday My Prince Will Come, which was in the last third of the movie. Walt included these plot devices because, to make the film as strong as possible he wanted to include as many elements as he could- sad moments, scary moments, comedy, and yes love. But the love is such a small part of the movie. When Snow White is almost murdered and runs into the woods, without any resources and is essentially homeless, she doesn’t wait for the Prince to save her or even mention him. She picks up and finds a new home and then barters to get room and board when the Dwarfs want to kick her out by marketing her skills she attained from her time at the castle (cooking and cleaning) because she sees it’s a gap she can fill. I’m SO over these bad faith readings where people like Rachel are intentionally misunderstanding the original works that made possible their production and then giving us a weaker production in return 🙄 lily James’ Cinderella is the perfect example. Lily did interviews talking about how stronger her character was than than the original, when her Cinderella was rewritten to only go to the ball because of the Prince and they were so focused on developing the relationship there that he inevitably ended up being way more the focus than he was in the 1950s movie, thus making Cinderella more dependent on him.
@cakecrumb095
Жыл бұрын
I completely agree. People praise the 2015 Cinderella as the only good live action remake but I would disagree because the cracks were starting to form. That Cinderella was supposed to be stronger and not need anyone’s help, which resulted in her singing passively at the end of the movie (and by luck catching the Prince’s attention), while in the original she was actively getting her friends to help her because she was trying to save herself. I don’t see how her actions in the 2015 remake made her stronger. She literally gave up.

It’s amazing how literally every other Snow White adaptation, be it closely following the OG tale, derivative or even loosely related or simply inspired, ends up looking way better than whatever the heck this is. At least they had believable dwarves and a Snow White who actually resembled her namesake (Lily Collins and Kristen Stewart especially). Lilly Collins’ version in particular did the whole girl-bossing thing right too- the Prince wasn’t completely sidelined and they bounced off each other well and formed that chemistry- that film wasn’t following the original story closely, but still managed to be entertaining. Knowing how Disney is handling these remakes, keeping my expectations low.

@@ghyslainabel I know it's going to be a CGI nightmare. I guess I'm more worried about the obvious hippie tree hugging, all hunting is bad hunting, all hunters are malicious overweight white men who feel they have to "compensate" for something. Or worse yet, they might gender swap Bambi and possibly his father too, to suggest that doe's really run things. Like how fem's argue lionesses run prides and not lions. Or they might make Bambi's female friend the "brains" of the movie. Honestly, I would like to see a CGI version. As long as they don't interject politics and leave the story alone it should be fine. However, given Disney's recent track record I have no hopes that they'll leave it alone and just make a pure CGI version for the next generation. Disney is already dead to me but if (when?) they mess this up I will curse them and any new CEO to an eternity of eating captain crunch cereal....DRY....and then they shall be forced to drink orange juice immediately after brushing their teeth and then talk at a bronie convention ending each sentence with a "neigh"...and then, and then.....

They get only parts of the script like "Scene: Snow White with the dwarfs at the table here have a dialogue". Disney is very bad at that actually ... the regiesseurs are like little monarchs.

Actually, in the original Disney story, Snow White WAS a leader... of the 7 Dwarves. She arrives and immediately takes over and rearranges their lives to make them more orderly and clean. But she does so as a traditional woman... as a mother. She takes on the leadership role of a mother to the childlike little old men. But New Woke Disney can't have that because Mothers are now "Birthing Persons" of either gender and can't be feminine in the least. Women must be Men and Men can't exist in a masculine role.

What's sad isn't that Disney is trying to get girls to think about other things than love. Self improvement is definitely a positive message for ANYONE, including girls. No, what's wrong is the enslavement aspect of trying to get girls to think climbing to the top of whatever power structure their lives involve them in is paramount to being happy. It's disgusting actually.

The original animation was not focused on her finding "true love", it was a cautionary tale about the Evil Queen, despite have immense power, having a homicidal jealousy against an adolescent girl. And that girl finding safety and support from outcasts of the kingdom. Reality is that the prince had 2 minutes within the original Snow White. That is a secondary character and ancillary to the story but by no means primary.
@animalian01

You're absolutely right,the romance part is minor in the story. The story is about the jealousy of the older queen afraid of losing out to the younger, more attractive blood princess and doing what she could to eliminate that threat.

Yes, the miraculous return to life and the marriage are standard fairytale tropes to provide the requisite happily-ever-after. The real drama occurs in the relationship between the evil queen and her stepdaughter. I‘ll be curious to see how the movie handles that in today‘s climate.
