Winter outdoor power equipment like my Troy-Bilt 2-stage snowblower may begin stalling as a sign that the belts need replacing. Specifically, the drive belt, not the auger belt is what actually fixed my snowblower from stalling as it tried throwing thicker, wetter, heavier snow. I always think the auger belt is the culprit but I always forget it's usually the thinner, drive belt causing my Troy-Bilt snowblower bogging down and stalling out as it tries throwing blowing deeper snow. I change the belts about every 4-5 years depending how much snow we get each Winter. It's usually just long enough for me to forget it's the drive belt that likely needs replacing. It's just as easy replacing both belts while I'm at it. However, the auger belt is much thicker and I wouldn't be surprised I could save the money and replace that belt less often. The drive belt is very skinny and thin so it seems to not last as long as I'd like.
The symptom I get when it's time to change the belts is the snowblower conks out as I try to clear thicker or wet snow. Every time, I'd swear it's poor fuel or spark plug needs replacing since the Troybilt snowblower acts like it loses power. However, it's usually the thin, drive belt that's the cause. I can only speculate it gets worn down and either loses tension or girth or maybe it becomes stiff and puts stress on the engine pulley shaft so it loses power.
I buy my belts and replacement parts directly from MTD Parts Online website below. I've spent too much time and gasoline running from big-box store to hardware store to small engine shop looking for the parts I need. Buying my Troy Bilt snow blower parts directly from MTD I usually get free shipping after spending the minimum necessary to quality...it's usually not hard by the time I buy belts, shave plate, shoes and new bolts and nuts.
