You didn’t mention if this was the small, medium or large version. Expensive yes, but you get (more) than you pay for. If you buy snow peak, you know you’ll be handing it down to your kids someday.

Well explained! Appreciate hearing about the cons. I know these are on the pricey side, but having camped with one of these on a number of occasions (with a friend who has one) I've been very impressed. Fires burn very efficiently, it radiates head superbly, and it's so fast and easy to set up and pack away, which is very useful in a typical overlanding scenario where you roll into a new campsite every night and break camp every morning. This is ideal in dispersed camping scenarios where Leave No Trace is essential. And - as you noted - the shape allows you to tuck your toes down under it a bit on a cold night and warm your feet from above without melting the soles of your shoes, as tends to happen warming your feet around a traditional ground campfire. I don't own one of these and probably won't be buying one soon, but compared to all the other portable, compact fire pit solutions I've looked at, IMO this one clearly rises above.

Great commentary Edward. I just picked one of these up yesterday and am headed to RMNP, Grand Tetons & Yellowstone tomorrow. After watching your video about not finding campsites at Glacier I purchased this to make finding dispersed sites in the National forest more flexible since now I have my own fire pit. Mine arrives Wednesday. I had the solo bonfire but it was too bulky and didn’t give enough heat. When I purchased that one it was more expensive than this one. I can’t wait to try mine out as I do a lot of truck camping and over landing. Thanks for making this video Edward.

Excellent review. One other problem I see, at least here in the PNW, is that this would not be compliant with burn bans which are often in effect for most of our fair weather off-roading season. If you're just looking for warmth, something propane will be compliant year round - though not nearly as nice for cooking.

I personally seen Edward stack firewood almost 3 stories tall. And that fire pit held up like a beast. I believe you can find them on Amazon for $316. That’s for the large fire pit and grill. And around $160 for the small set up. It is a luxury item. But I think it pays for itself in no time with its convenience and durability. Great review Edward. The b rolls were smooth. You do the best gear reviews on YT! I own the Snow Peak large & would mention that the small & medium fire pits are not really worth it IMHO. Unless of course you are a hobbit family. I also own the large coal bed insert & cooked all my meals on it using organic charcoal at camp. It was clean, easy & the food cooked really fast. I even made brownies using the Firebox billy can. Great review. Just bought one after watching this review. I'm curious though - what's the best way to extinguish a fire in this pit and dispose of the ashes the base catches? I'm used to just letting a fire burn down and kicking some sand on it or pouring water on it and walking away. I can't seem to find a good process for what to do with a pit like this. Thanks!

Good review, thanks. I love mine, but have not done the “high stack” of wood - looking forward to trying that. One definite con (tried to see if anyone else had mentioned), is that the grill itself is NOT stainless, with is kind of a bummer. Not easy to clean as a result, and will rust given it is just chrome-plated steel. What are your thoughts on that, and how best have you kept yours clean?

David Garcia I haven’t had personal experience with the bio lites, but I heard they can rust after a few uses. And I’m not too comfortable with having a fire pit that runs on batteries, since I want my campfire experience to be simple. As for the solo stove, I’ve had the chance to experience one recently and they seem well made, but it would take up too much space on my rig. 👍

Nigel Naughton that’s a good point. Many of these things aren’t really necessary. I used to go out with nothing but a ground tent.
