On Feb 22, 2019 Wings of Wonder received a call about a Snowy Owl that, according to the finder, was injured and needed to be rescued in Empire, MI. Ken Scott and Rebecca Lessard gathered up handling gloves, a pet crate, towels and a blanket, and headed to the location where the owl was last seen. Upon arrival they easily found the beautiful wing imprints and tracks in the snow leading to where the owl was ‘hiding’. It was immediately apparent that the owl was not injured but instead was sitting on a large chunk of meat … perhaps a rabbit or squirrel. There were several resident crows in the nearby trees, loudly sounding their alarm cries, who were clearly upset about the owl in their neighborhood. The crows eventually got bored cawing at the owl and soon took off.
Ken and Rebecca were able to watch the owl gracefully fly to a safer place to enjoy her lunch in peace.
It is important to give these winter migrants space and privacy to hunt, rest and survive the long winter … so please enjoy their beauty from a respectable distance.
