Above everything, I really want an England-Australia quarter-final. Not only the history between the two nations, but also the throwback to 2003 when Eddie was in charge of the Wallabies and recent history between Eddie Jones and England. Imagine the headlines if Eddie Jones led Australia to beat England (the team who up until a year ago he was expecting to coach in this RWC) out of the World Cup. If England or another Northern Hemisphere team doesn't win the World Cup, I want Australia to win it, just for the headlines involving Eddie Jones. Also, small note: at 2:43 you showed a picture of Elton Flatley when you said Stephen Larkham. Otherwise, great video.

Here's something I've been wondering - with all the analysis on shapes/positions etc (1, 3, 1; 2, 2, 2; etc), how much are the players on the field consciously taking note of the numbers, sizes of pods etc? And how is all this getting into position orchestrated? You've said before things like "Ford calls for a set of forwards" but it'd be interesting to know what these playmakers are actually shouting, how they are organising the lines or setting up moves on the fly.

He has selected Carter Gordon and Ben Donaldson as his flyhalf options - they have six Tests between them with five losses." scrolling through the team list there the majority of players I'd say have like 5-10 caps. 6 caps between to kickers and cutting Quade instead one of the untested guys. You aren't going far in a worldcup without kicking and Carter Gordon kicked 20% in your final warm up match. Eddie has gone full glass cannon with child soldiers whose baptism of fire is WC. If they got a couple of rapid try scored on them they things get very bad very fast. And. They play Fiji in their second game and us the week after.

What I would say about the Australians at the moment is that, at the moment (i.e., on the basis of form), the answer is a qualified no. However, their performance trajectory has clearly been upwards and if they can get it all to function for the full 80+ minutes, then they look to have most of the tools they will need to go deep into the tournament. An Eddie Jones Wallabies team could be a very awesome thing indeed, but they look to have solved their traditional Achilles heel - the scrum - which should give them something of a platform for their always dangerous backs to work some magic. As an Englishman, they make me very, very nervous. If they find someone reliable to take the shots at goal…
@67Evan

Great laugh, we'd all love to dream over here but we don't have a world class goal-kicker and only one fly half at the tournament which appears ill advised to say the least. That's not to say Quade should have been picked. We might also not make the quarters if Wales and Fiji fire.

OK so France and Ireland are doing that already creating rucks to shift players into position confusing the defense. Attacks are always in motion from left to right - I have seen ABs do that so everyone is doing it to some degree and to their best practices. Speed is necessary to excecute to beauty and it is a joy to watch if it results in 5 points. The counter is when there is a turn over and the opposition turns the attack on you with a mixture of slow and fast ball and ricght kicking or break that creates a great counter attack. Its like a flow of offense and defense systems that no matter where you are in the field, move to your most effective position immediately by making the right decision. It fails sometimes but that's the game we all love - no matter how much analysis we do, JUST PLAY.

I find it very hard to agree with this to be honest. I think it’s more likely Eddie’s planning ahead for the long run. You don’t reinvent the wheel on the eve of an F1 race. As you said or at least implied, it took two years for England’s attack to click in the way Eddie intended. Five games aren’t enough to do that, and the Wallabies’ kicking game has been pretty atrocious. I think you’re giving too much leeway to the emotional aspect of matches in that regard. History will tell who’s right, but I reckon RA and Eddie are more than happy to use this as a stepping stone ahead of wayyyyy more important Lions tour and home World Cup. The first game against Georgia will be a good indication of where the Wallabies really are, both mentally and tactically. In any case, they’ll need a good performance or I see a Fiji W coming the week after.
