Great Video and thanks for keeping the SIM alive! IMHO - Been playing since Silent Service I - ALWAYS set detonator to MAG. Always. Why? If a MAG strikes the hull, the AI uses the higher "impact" dud rate. If it slides underneath, there is a second chance for detonation. Additionally, while using MAG, I have had a dud impact only to have the MAG detonate as the hull passes over the sinking fish. Bottom line: MAG will operate as a traditional "Impact" if it strikes the target... but "Impact" will never fire as a "MAG" if it passes under. To prove my point, just do one patrol and set all torps to MAG and fire as if they are impact...and you will see equal or better results. Good Luck and Good Hunting!

He's playing based on historical operating procedures in the war using the 'just follow orders submod', at that time in the war he's not aloud to use magnetic pistols because they still had depth keeping issues at that time of the war. Orders are orders sir and its not to ask why but to do or die! He knows about mags already and has been playing patrols in modded sh3 for many many years, sometimes people like playing under rules to make the gameplay harder because we find even modded sh3 easy after playing a while. Plus at that time in war in the mod magnetic failure rates are higher due to hsie failure rates feature. - Kyle9154 (GWX Onealex mod team)

A magnetic detonator has a chance of exploding before reaching the target due to magnetic field interference or waves. If you need to use magnetic to destroy something, then you should turn around and ask yourself: "Why am I attacking such small ships!?"
@tarkalak
Жыл бұрын
I generally shoot at targets until out of torpedoes and stalk the same target until I sink or until I cannot chase it anymore. You have only two left so it makes sense to throw them away at the first target and go home for more. With the current torpedo problems you may not be able to sink a ship with only one so you are wasting fuel.
@Tonci87

Since I´m very unlikely to come across another target on my home voyage it is more economical to use up all Torpedoes before returning.

I guess you should have swapped for an electric detonator after all. When spotted, I always move away from the target and go around it. By the time you are generally in front of them again, they usually stopped zigzagging. Then: underwater attack.

That torpedo miss was a punishment for greed; you knew it won't work and you tried anyway. Conserve torps. The BdU will be angry at you more for wasting a torp than aborting an attack for weather reasons. I think BdU values sinking, let's say, a 5000 GRT ship later down the line more than forcing an attack that is doomed to fail on a 1000 GRT coastal scrap.

Whats the principle for using the deck gun? I've always wondered why it is not used more often for singled out merchant ships.
@Tonci87
Жыл бұрын
I have orders to use Torpedoes so that the English assume the ships were sunk by mines (makes them less likely to saturate the area with escorts I guess). That is why the Torpedos are used primarily. The deck gun also needs a lot of hits to sink a so far undamaged merchant (8.8 is not a big caliber in naval terms). While on the surface I´m at risk of airplane attack. Due to that the gun should really only be used to finish of a ship that refuses to sink otherwise.

u should set the torp to magnetism, they would explode in this case, and in magnetism setting they will also detonate if it hits the hull. also its not advisable to sail around enemy ship like that for so long even though they are not armed. They always radio in on sub contact and call in planes/dd. you might be lucky theres no dd nearby and maybe their planes are not operating in heavy weather. no idea why u didnt get some plane sent your way, usually it happens pretty fast.

Is returning to base only when you've exhausted all of your torpedoes part of the historical flavor? 1 torpedo, low gun ammo. Would suck to come across a convoy and all you can hope for is to sink 1 ship.
@Tonci87
Жыл бұрын
Yes, that would suck. If I were in the Atlantic, I would have sailed back home now. But since I´m in the North Sea the chance of finding a convoy is low. It is also exceedingly unlikely that I will encounter a target on my way home, so it is better to use up all Torpedoes before I sail for home

@@Tonci87no the problem is, as I said in a previous comment, that you keep firing the torpedoes too deep. These small vessels don't have more than 3 meters draft, if you shot them at 4 meters you are gonna miss 100% of the time.
