Mother is actually a really sad song, it’s about an overbearing mum Molly coddling her son by not letting him be a boy and do the things he wants to. This is because she lost her husband in the war and is terrified of losing her son. It's all done through love, but has a negative effect on him creating bricks in his wall of isolation. That's why he says at the end, "Mother did it need to be so high". Also, when a song can affect you so greatly it's powerful, there's nothing wrong with exposing yourself to those feelings and especially appreciating your Mom.

I believe, Roger Waters put multiple meanings to this line. It could mean at the same time, "did the wall need to be so high?", "why did I grow up?", and "did it need to be junked up?"

Well, you have to remember that Pink never, ever, ever takes responsibility for himself. He always lays it on Them, They. Never I. So with this song, so with the album. His father, mother, wife, etc... This song he blames his mother for helping build the wall because she was protective. While it might be that his mother actually did overprotect to some degree, none of the things he mentions are necessarily bad things (Mother will find out where you've been, etc). Even the Mother I will put all my fears into you, is something every parent should probably do to some degree. I mean, unless you think a child should touch the fire to learn it is dangerous instead of telling them it is dangerous. Many say the song is about a bad mother. When it is coming from Pink, you should take the lesson with some amount of skepticism.

@stanleymyrick4068 You hit it right on the head. I constantly see commentary about how the mother character was a detriment and a negative aspect of Pink's life, but you're absolutely right that it was done out of love and a fear of losing her son. I also am glad to see someone else point out that Pink never takes responsibility for anything, and that it's always everyone else at fault. Maybe in that sense, Roger truly is Pink.

One reason why its so different from any of their songs you've heard is that it has Rodger Waters on vocals, who left the band in 1985. I'd recommend reacting to Echoes live at Pompeii to see the 4 primary members after Syd Barrett's tragic departure from the band.

Following the trend of the band's three previous studio albums, The Wall is a concept album, dealing with themes of abandonment and personal isolation. It was initially conceived during the In the Flesh tour in 1977, when bassist and lyricist Roger Waters' frustration with his audience became so acute that he imagined himself building a wall between the stage and the audience. The Wall is a rock opera centered on Pink, a fictional character based on Waters. Pink's life experiences begin with the loss of her father during World War II, and continue with ridicule and abuse from her teachers, her overprotective mother, and finally the end of her marriage. All of this contributes to a self-imposed isolation from society, represented by a metaphorical wall. It is necessary to listen to the entire album to internalize and understand the story. Hug- ✌

To get the whole picture of 'The Wall' you first need listen to the whole record, then watch the concert movie from Roger Waters 2011 and 2014 tour and finally the movie they released in the beginning of the 80s. The movie by director Alan Parkerwill provide you with all the context you need to understand the whole concept behind 'The Wall'. The tour had an unbelievable visual concept. During the first half of the concert they built brick by brick the wall until the whole band is hidden behind it. The whole time the wall is used as a monimantal screen to show pictures, movies and best of all unbeleivable animations by Gerald Scarfe. in the second half of the concert the band remains and plays most of the time behind it. From time to time Roger or the 'surrogate' band appeared in front of it until the whole wall will be torn down after the trial 'Pink' (Roger Waters) is holding against himself.

I was lucky enough to go Pink Floyd's "The Wall" concert when I was a senior in high school, about 1980. It was released as a double album set, and part of the incredible stage show was that during the first part of show (sides 1 & 2) of the album, roadies were actually building a (cardboard) wall and at the end of side 2, the entire stage was obscured. That wall was then used to show animation for sides 3 & 4, though members of Pink Floyd would appear in front of the wall, (or above the wall, and as I recall, even a door opened in the wall to show David playing guitar, but the show was mostly Roger Waters (lyricist and bass player) on stage, in front of the wall. At the time, it was the most expensive concert tour in history, and it only played 2 cities in the US, LA for 7 shows, and Long Island, NY for 5 shows. There were also huge "marionettes" performing on stage as characters from the music as well, which were really wild. It was one of the most amazing concert experiences I have ever had.

The album The Wall was made together with the film of the same name. Their albums always tell a story like a novel, it starts with the first chapter, develops and ends with the last chapter. This one is no different, the story tells how a child's life is threatened by everything from their environment. The same goes for a mother who lost her husband in the war and raises her child very protectively as she knows and knows best, but it may not be the best for the child herself. That is why the child, the young man begins to build a defensive wall around himself against the outside world. In this poem, the mother also added a brick or two to this virtual wall. And in the end, he wonders why it has to be so difficult.

Thanks for the reply, I really like your comments which show a genuine curiosity about the world around you, about music and the comments reflect that. Regarding the desire for the next video, if I stay with the Floyd, who are among my three favorite musical groups, first of all, as a group, they somehow have three musical periods, the first with the original leader Syd Barrett, where they laid the foundations of exploring the possibilities of instruments, mutual cooperation, jamming , the second with the most productive creative work of the most famous albums and the last only instrumental compositions. I think that for anyone who is just getting to know PF and is posting reactions to it, the most spontaneous and natural way is through individual pieces, which is exactly what you have chosen yourself. It will surely draw you to know more and listen to the whole album. But to begin with, I would advise that not in one piece of the whole, but piece by piece separately one after another in a separate video and only later whole album in one video if you wish. What reaction would you like to hear next? Perhaps Welcome to the machine, where they fight the cruel music industry, in the battle with which they themselves had to leave a part of themselves in order to become what they are today. The industry won, reported in Have a cigar. Or Shine on you crazy diamond, parts 1-5 and 6-9 dedicated to the memory of original leader Syd Barrett, who was driven away from them by drugs. Or their longest song Echoes, first the studio version, and later Live at Pompeii (full or part 1 and 2), where they performed in the amphitheater in Pompeii also for a TV movie in front of empty stands, only with the souls of those who died two millennia ago under the ash of the volcanic eruption of Vesuvius@-TeIe.gram_me_StaceyRPGReacts

Through all her actions and influence mentioned in the song, she built upon Pink’s wall by being as patronising, overprotective and dominant as she was. The Wall is about the wall we all build to protect who we all are, our inner psyche, hidden fears, aspirations, loves, our emotions that are formed from our interactions with people and life, it is a wall, a facade, a barrier, our strength, our being, our universe - yes, that is why Pink Floyd speaks to us all.

To me, putting your guard up is the WALL of protection for oneself. You can only protect the little ones for soo long and instill good values in them and hope that it sinks in eventually. Ultimately they wish you to be happy in you life.

Pink Floyd's lyrics are always deep and complex. Waters is a narrative genius. Much of what he tells is autobiographical. If you know his life it will explain many things to you.

This song is about an overbearing mother who won't let her child grow. She lost her husband in WWII. So now she's overly protective and won't let her son make his own choices and decisions. It's not about him asking his mother these questions. It's that he has to. She won't let him think for himself and have control over his own life. She controls every aspect of his life. It's a beautiful song musically (one of my favorites), but the story it tells in its lyrics is incredibly dark and insidious. Every time I hear the line, "Mother, didn't need to be so high," I wonder if he means high as in high on drugs or if he means high as in high and mighty acting.

The drummer on this track isn't Nick Mason - it was a 17 year old session drummer brought in because Nick was having trouble with the strange meter, and this kid aced it in one take. He's Jeff Porcaro of Toto fame ...

The whole album is about a person, a Roger Waters' alter ego (Bob Geldof in the movie) who gradually builds a wall separating him form others. It's about being a succesful musician, but also, any experience he had in his life is "Another brick in the wall". His school teacher, his mother, his wife, but in the end he realizes that if you build a wall and isolate yourself from others, you are the real culprit, and the judge, at the end of the movie sentences that the wall must be torn down and he got to be exposed before his peers. Grab a six pack of beer, whatch the movie and you will love this whole stuff. A kiss.

One of my favourite songs. It's about an over protective mother who does not want to let go of her son. You are spot on with your analysis of the song. The son cannot function socially so builds the wall to keep the outside world out. If you watch the film of The Wall it all becomes clear. The last line does relate to the wall that is built. Also I just want to say that you are fantastic. Beautiful and intelligent lady who loves Pink Floyd. What more could anyone ask for!

Most people don’t understand this but, this song was written from the perspective of a small child growing up in Pre-communist Germany and then it jumps to his adolescence when he moves into the teenager and pre-adult life with no one to guide you but your ever loving mother and then he starts dating but all this happens during the Communist Berlin East-West Germany when the wall was built but then he, becoming part of the Army or militia forces has to change his ideology and so partly loses his identity and when he realizes what he has got himself into, then asks his mother: “Mother, did it need to be so high” referring to the life those people in East Germany had to go thru and how he is tortured by guilt for joining an ideology and a government system that failed most people under a communist regime. It has nothing to do with the mother’s protection but with his adult ideas of what he has become and has no one to turn to but his mother…

This, I think, is the first time you've heard Roger Waters. He is the voice of the child asking the questions and David Gilmour voices the mother. I absolutely loved the smile on your face when the Gilmour solo started. You looked like someone had just given you a sweet hug. That is the same way I feel every time I hear it too. (And I've probably heard it hundreds of times). It never gets old. "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" is another album version well worth the listen. Musical masterpiece. I love your PF reactions. You get them the same way I have for nearly 60 years. Keep 'em coming.

“The Wall” is about the life of the young fictional boy, Pink. This song is from his formative years, whereas “Comfortably Numb” from later in the same album, is about the repercussions of the wall being so high. As another said, bassist and songwriter Roger Waters’ father was killed in WW2 when he was young, and it’s not hard to picture his mother being very afraid of losing her child, too~to a girl, to life, to rock and roll, to anything. So Roger made Pink’s mother like his own; over-protective, loving, flawed, and probably like a lot of moms. (By the way, it’s Roger’s voice you hear as Pink, and David Gilmour’s voice singing Mother's part in the choruses. Roger drove most of PF's songwriting, and his own difficult life became the fodder for his songs.) It was intriguing watching the expressions play across your face, as you listened to the questions get posed. (Particularly curious about that smile you shared over “Mother should I trust the government?”) Your honest responses to the music make you a joy to watch react. Thanks for that. REALLY enjoying watching you explore the Pink Floyd rabbit hole. Perhaps next you could listen to “Coming Back To Life” from PULSE. The song is good, but it’s David’s ethereal opening solo that raises the live version above the studio version. And if you’re enjoying the music of the 70’s and 80’s, try Billy Joel. The guy’s got TWO greatest hits collections. As an introduction to his catalog, I’d suggest “Piano Man”, about the years when he had to hide out and play local bars under an assumed name, until his record contract expired. Or “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant”, which is three great songs in one. My personal favorite is “And So It Goes”, a quiet, achingly-poignant song about the pain and risks of love. Billy called it the song he’s proudest of. Thank you for staying real. Don’t forget, someday try listening to TSFH. Great stuff.
