I feel the same. I never wanted to play Prey and did it only when my cousin told me that I really really should. I know how obnoxious he can be, so I decided to run through couple of locations, say that I've played it and that's it. And... well, I still think that Prey is one of the best games released in 2017 - year that had such games as Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, Resident Evil 7, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Sonic Mania, Divinity: Original Sin 2, PC ports of Bayonetta and Vanquish, Nier: Automata and other games that I genuenly consider very good. Pretty much same for me. I had no interest at all in this game at first. I think its failure, like joseph anderson said, is due to the name Prey. Man the final act is terrible. After spending almost 20 hours being slow methodical, and driven, it throws such rediculous odds at you, with respawning enemies with huge health bars that can track you down, forcing you to simply run back and forth the station and for what reason? The game could pretty much have done without the entire Dahl subplot and been the better for it. I don't mind the rush when the apex arrives, but for that to happen immediately after the Dahl situation was such an odd pacing decision. If Dahl arrived half way through the game, that would have been a better break of the pace without being too forced. Also why do you need to go to the powerplant to arm the self destruct, surely that should always been completely enacted in the bridge. A part of my decision to use the nullwave, excluding that I believed it was the right thing to do, was because I cbf heading down again just to head back up. Such a shame for this otherwise, masterpiece of game to end.
@JumalaPlays
4 жыл бұрын
The ending was good, you knew it was coming right from the first 10 hours of the game, and you knew you drew closer and closer to it. Why would it need some extra twists and shit, twists are overused anyways so the biggest twist is no twist. It was the ending you were expecting all the time, and you got what you wanted and for the people that didn't have enough, there was the after credits scene which explained quite a bunch anyways so it was a good ending, just different
@jockturner1547
4 жыл бұрын
@@JumalaPlays no one mentioned that it needed any twists... We are talking about the fact that the 3rd act of the game feels to be at a far lower quality than the rest of the game. Forcing a style of gameplay that was discouraged for the whole game and the actual ending being extremely brief. Like you use the nullwave, it plays a extremely short Cutscene that just validates your choice and then the credits role. The addition of the twist of the simulation is slightly better in terms of acknowledging your choices, at the cost of making it feel like all the choices you actually made were for nothing. Not saying it's bad, I liked the ending, but that doesn't mean it was perfect.

Pausing the game for hacking made one of my favorite moments on Prey happen, I was fighting a Technopath that was controlling two turrets and I couldn't seem to get rid of them, so I guided him into a room with a second floor, I jumped onto him and hacked both turrets before touching the floor, switched to the stun gun and stunlocked him as the turrets did the rest of the job. Bioshock did live hacking and it worked back then because flying turrets weren't really that deadly (and you could always instantly stun them with Electrobolt or the hacking gun), in this game things are a lot deadlier up close (in Hard) and later in the game they attack you in groups, so it makes sense that Prey would pause the game for the hacking minigames.

Ray, you know how much I try to stay away from this game because of how hyped I was about the original Prey 2. You've convinced me to give it a shot, which is a massive achievement. Great job as always, buddy! However, I think the issue of standard game mechanics such as inventory screens and hacking are actually a necessary evil in games like this. While I fully understand the issue of immersion breaking due to having every other aspect of the game in real-time, I see it more as a break for the audience. Similar to the quieter moments in an action film or comedic relief in a horror film, the audience NEEDS a moment to catch their breath. If said player feels constantly on edge, which most probably do during their exploration of the station, then it loses its potential effectiveness. Having the screens break the immersion, even for a moment, allows the player to take a breather and focus on one task, instead of having ANOTHER thing to worry about. While that makes sense for a thriller/horror atmosphere, if the game has an enemy that can appear out of nowhere, then it was probably a conscious decision to let those moments freeze time for the players benefit.

The skill ceiling with that game is so incredibly high that i feel like i hadn't even scratched the surface of the game's replay value. Great video man, really enjoying the channel!

You know, about that "full immersion", one company back in the 2008 (i guess, too lazy to goggle it) gave us the answer to the question of player involvement and that was Visceral with Dead Space. It was totally immersive and was easily believable cause all the menus did not stop time and did not disconected you from Isaac, and for a horror game that was a huge win. So if developers still want from players to be maximum involved in the process and that they could easily impersonate themselves with main character, there is no better example than Dead Space i think (sorry for English, not my native language, and great video, as usual)

Oh my God! Thank you! Thank you for allowing me to finally find someone who viewed both Alien: Isolation and PREY in the same manner, these are both absolutely brilliant games that boldly go beyond the normal, brainless FPS genre and bring you into a truly living environment....but they are both just too damn long. Alien: Isolation should have ended the moment you jettison the Alien via the science lab thingy, and the end scene should have had you escaping via a hatch and returning to Sevastopol, like you did in the game, and PREY should have ended before the General arrives on TALOS. Quite literally, I just couldn't bring myself to keep playing once he arrived.

I have to disagree about the third act. Yes, you are running back and forth through the ship but it's pretty neat when you have memorised those areas and know shortcuts and have invested in mobility. Kind of feels like coming back to an old area in a Metroidvania. But the main point is that I found many very important voicelogs and files in the last third of the game. I found Morgans psychological evaluation in that part. All the information I found there allowed me to really put the events that happened in order and figure out the timeline so the story/worldbuilding felt the strongest towards the end. I figured out where January and Alex stand which is an aspect that makes the third act a bit weaker because the mystery was a big part that made the first two acts so strong, but there were still loose ends like the records that you can find on some kind of disaster that persumably happened on earth, Sarahs psychological evaluation and the visions you have while in coral. Those loose ends kept me invested in the story and caused the ending to have a big impact.

The original planned sequel was tangentially connected to the first, but that connection was still there, in the case of the game that we got, the title just seemed like a cheap cash grab on Bethesda's part. Prey(2017) should've just been a new IP, but BS just assumed that if they took the name of a franchise they had lying around that had had a highly anticipated sequel before its sudden cancellation, they'd be able to recapture that old hype, instead the Prey we got suffered because the people it was implicitly marketed to were angry that it wasn't the sequel they had already been sold on. They wanted to piggyback on a legacy & got the worst possible outcome for their trouble

Then I watched a few tips and tricks video's and said maybe it's worth a revisit, and I'm sure glad I did. Prey turned out to be one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played and found a lot of re play value in it, using different play styles and abilities each time. You really can't get all you can out of this game by only 1 play through imo. There's a little bit of a learning curve but once you get it it's an awesome gaming experience, wish there were more games like this. Loved it!

Joe Cucuzza The story? Lack of NG+? Most likely the fact Dishonored, even while offering a lot of freedom on how to approach situations, al the targets still have a binary way to approach them. Lethal or not. Even the story, at its core, is just so-so, even if the world building is brilliant. Prey is a lot more open ended, with more variety, more endings, more ways to approach scenarios, even better world building IMO and a better story as well.

This is the first video of yours that I've watched and I must say I'm impressed. You've clearly played the game to an extent most people wouldn't, but your ideas concerning the pacing as well as the ingenuity weren't loss in needless praise, unneeded qualifiers. However, I had a very different experience with Prey vs Dishonored. I was utterly immersed by dishonored, and while its sequel didn't live up to what I wanted out of Arkane, it sated my appetite. I struggled to get into Prey however. Basically, I had the same observations as you did, but I felt the bad outweighed the good by a large enough margin, I STILL have yet to make it to Act 3, and I had the game pre-ordered. Played it the day it came out. Arkane is capable of making amazing games, and I believe what they have been making recently is well above almost every other AAA publisher out there right now. When they make a game, and I mean when - not if, that manages to take everything they learned from Prey and improve on it; that will be a game no one forgets quickly

Raycevick I believe the lack of overlap stems to how much people loved Dishonored. The people who loved Dishonored really loved Dishonored. Likely because the people who had just enough interest to get to push through the first few missions (the worst missions) were also the people who were able to get to the amazing part of Dishonored. Not that some people didn't like Dishonored or don't fit into those categories just that most of the people I observed seemed to be like that. Anyways those people had such high expectations after the original Dishonored that they felt like PREY 2O17 had to be amazing but those who weren't able to push through the first little bit of the game had low expectations.

I saw you using the 'Huntress Boltcaster' to lure the zero-g exploders away. 😁 I felt like a genius when I thought of that strategy. I had so much fun in this game exploring anything and everything. There would be obstacles that seemed to require a strength upgrade to lift the objects, but then I said "F**k that!" and I used the force of explosives to move them out of my way. If there were a door that I couldn't unlock, I'd check for windows and morph into coffee cups to simply slide through their bars, like that room at 3:28

@thenecromorpher
6 жыл бұрын
I was noticing a weird stutter (or _something_ at least), but it was only noticeable when there was player movement in certain areas. Clips in the greenhouse area that has your character's brother's office/living quarters had the most noticeable amounts of the weird stutter, of what I'm referring to at least, since you could see it even when the player char was walking (especially noticeable at 2:48) from what I was noticing at least, since it's in almost just about every clip inside the station and possibly outside of it). I could be talking about something entirely unspecific to what you're talking about also (since I noticed a "weird stutter" as opposed to "lag"), or we're using different terms to talk about the same thing, but it does look like there's "lag of some kind" at least.

It could be something to do with the Occlusion Culling, I think I remember Prey 2017 getting a patch, or part of one, to fix it awhile back during it's first or second month after release so maybe needs to be tweaked/relooked at a little more if anything (some people had reported the entire space station or large portions of it became technically loaded into memory despite being in said station and it significantly impacting performance in certain areas of the game).

I'm kind of on the opposite side of things with you. Dishonored grabbed me in a big way and Prey kinda left me ambivalent. A lot of it is what you described. The game drags on and on. Plus the lack of enemy variety and odd character dialogue/animation hurt the experience. Like the old Looking Glass studio characters. Except that was because of technical limitations, so what's Arkane's excuse? I don't know. Arkhane hasn't really made a game I truly love so far, but they're a developer who consistently make good stuff. I hope they can finally hit their stride and make something truly wonderful. They've clearly got the potential
@Ciber2k
6 жыл бұрын
Well, while it's true that obviously Arkane has better tech than Looking Glass to make more realistic characters, nowadays there is no way to make an in-game NPC feel real, so the problem, despite being reduced, will still be the same. You can only make this possible in Cutscenes if you have Naughty Dog's budget.

I disagree that npc realism is contingent upon fully fledged cgi cutscenes (naughty dog). Witcher 3's dialogue feels fantastic, getting mentally and emotionally involved with an npc happens pretty naturally (in my opinion). But some might argue those are cutscenes too. Even so, I think it's safe to say people are satisfied with what Bethesda did with skyrim and fallout in regards to player to non-player dialogue, and those are anything but fully fledged cutscenes

I will never forget my personal all -time favorite story related to this game. It was a late-game mission that had given me the objective to move some turrets from one place to the next, and I was supposed to grab some turrets from behind a door, but, when i'd first seen the turrets, I instead turned them into materials with the grenade. So I was shit out of luck and turrets. In order to complete my objective I had to sit around for an hour or so stacking boxes leading up to a suspended walkway just so that i could get some turrets. Never have I had an experience of a game that was as free as this. It's been pretty hard to find it nowadays, when most games confine you to a way to beat something the way the devs thought was best for the player.

I really enjoyed this video as your insights are sharp and deep, and I am very happy someone else appreciates what Arkane did with Prey, even if you did dump on parts of it somewhat unfairly, in my opinion. One thing I don't agree with you on is your assessment of Prey's length. I hate games that overstay their welcome, but I was hooked on Prey from start to finish, and found the length to be just right overall. It's not often I play first-person games without thinking "Oh god, please just END now" at some point, and that didn't happen in Prey for me. I also don't understand how Dishonored didn't grab you, as I enjoyed the first one and adored the second. That Clockwork Mansion level and the one with the time travel (the seventh mission, I think) were just incredible, and the sheer verticality of the levels was astonishingly good. Arkane has some really talented level designers, that's for sure. Oh, one last thing - I actually quite like the "gamey" parts of Prey. Game design is *hard*, and I appreciate that devs have to make concessions like having the game pause for me to do inventory management/hacking/whatever. Menus and other interface elements that pop up don't break my immersion, they simply become part of it. Anyway, just wanted to stop by and leave this comment after stumbling across your video while looking for reviews on the Mooncrash DLC. Glad I did, you have one happy new subscriber who's about to go trawling through the other videos you've done.

i played prey. it was pretty fun, but imo the fact that enemies just respawn when you leave and reenter an area kinda sucks. i spent a ridiculous amount of time gathering everything slightly useful in the lobby and piling it in the office, and had all 3 turrets watching the door. then i came back after leaving the office and found a mimic just sitting there between two of the turrets. also, if you leave and immediately go back into a level, the enemies would have respawned. there is no delay between enemy spawns, which is doubly annoying. once you figure that out, going back to previously visited areas isnt that worth it anymore. supplies dont respawn so if you do go back its best to just run past everything. also the ending didnt surprise me in the least. dont remember what tipped me off, but i was dead sure about halfway into the game there would be a twist and that twist would be that i was a typhon myself.
