I don’t. I get what the creator was trying to do. But portraying evil racist slave owners as POC is not really groundbreaking. Especially because slavery in America was racial. That kind of takes away from that reality. But I do think it’s a good thing that the actors have opportunities after this.
@happyyy1445
4 жыл бұрын
It's been years since I've dug into the behind the scenes of Hamilton, so feel free to fact-check this, but I think one of the reasons why they chose to cast POC is because there are already so many "white stories" out there. POC actors don't get as many opportunities because they don't fit what the writers envision. This musical was inspired by history, which has been (wrongfully) portrayed as a "white story". They didn't want to let that stop them from hiring talented POC, and the purpose of this musical isn't to relay historically accurate info anyway. Also, hiring POC was kind of a tribute to all of the POC erased from history. There were so many POC, specifically Black people, who had major contributions to founding the U.S., but unfortunately their contributions either weren't recorded or are minimized. They wanted the Hamilton cast to reflect the diversity of who actually founded this country.

Broadway theater has been so classist for sooo long. Almost every show that gets big in our generation (ie: Rent, Heathers, Mean Girls, Dear Evan Hansen, Wicked, etc) is “counter cultural” in some way. The problem with that is realistically the only people who can afford to see shows like this (lottery and special circumstances notwithstanding) are people who can heft that coin for a ticket. These shows are always like “rise common people”, and then no “common people” are in the theater.The fact that musicals are FINALLY on streaming services/TV finally backs up the values that these shows claim to uphold.

I took my husband to see Hamilton in Chicago last year for his birthday and idk if it was a weekday night or what but my tickets for decent seats were $99 a piece (which if you know Hamilton is pretty cheap). I LOVE theater and it kills me how expensive it is. Theater will die if they don't stop being so elitist.

Lovely Life you are completely right. I should have made my point more clear. What I was trying to say was that all of those shows, specifically the two you rightfully pointed out, make a point of saying something along the lines of “prettier does not equal good” or “the people who everyone likes and listens to aren’t always good”. Broadly, it’s an “underdog wins” mentality which, to a certain degree, is countercultural. You are right though. I simply meant in terms of plot-ish devices. An almost completely white cast with leads who are almost always white is not countercultural. I’m a 🤡 for saying that.

PSA for all the uneducated ones, you can like the musical without liking the presidents or “characters” To all the people saying I’m excusing racism, first of all I’m a black girl. Why would I do that. Secondly, I like the songs and actors not once did I say I like the founding fathers and slave owners. Don’t twist my words. I appreciate the art modern day people created. I DO NOT like the founding fathers. Also stop arguing in the comments, it’s a musical. It’s not a historical documentary. It’s obviously not going to be accurate. If you want accuracy attend a history class or watch an actual documentary not a literal MUSICAL.

Unpopular opinion: "It's quiet uptown" has always been on of my favorite song. I know, I know judge me, I don't care. I will never not cry to it. Also, I actually don't mind Lin singing and acting. Of course he's outshined by EVERY single other actor/actress on stage. Their level of talent is out of space. But he gives Hamilton a sort of puppy energy that matches the character in the musical. He's just so happy to be here and surrounded by those phenomenal performers. And as a writer, I know for sure if one of my movies or series is every picked up, I'll put myself in the middle of it regardless of my talent because we'd be selfcentered sometimes.
