I wonder if adding heavy duty rolling casters would be helpful for portability of the water trough planters

Yes! There is a photo from a Better Homes and Gardens magazine and other publication from many years ago where the homeowners did this as they planted arborvitae privacy shrubs in them at the end of their driveway where their backyard entertaining area began. It looked great! I pull pages from my stash of well loved 30 year old garden magazines for great ideas to try.

Good Mirning Janey. My first thought about the trough gardens was fabulous but then when you said you would move them was omg they will be too heavy. I thought if you had Jason cut a piece of fairly thick plywood cut to the shape of trough, put it on the bottom and attach some wheels that will make it easier to move out when it's time to move greenhouse back. Just a thought that might make things easier.

Could probably even sit it on 2 Harbor Freight furniture dollies, they have a couple that are solid panels instead if frames. Depends on if the water trough might warp at all under the weight or if it would hold itself in shape

Hi again. I started using water troughs against the back of my old house years ago. I wanted a raised bed but didn’t want water against the house to ruin the stucco. I drilled holes in the bottom then added screen door material cut to fit the bottom so dirt would not plug holes. Then just filled up with dirt. No rocks or cloth. They were fantastic. I had 2 2x2x6, then later because it was so successful I got one your size to put on cement. I also added concrete blocks underneath. I loved them so much. Then we moved to a larger one story home with smaller yard. We again got 2 of the 6 foot ones and did the same thing. I have them planted with, peppers,tomatoes and flowers! I love them so much! Can’t wait to see what you put in yours!

Just an FYI on the raised bed mix… I used that last year for my vegetable planters and my plants fried. I normally use their blue bag with fantastic success so I don’t know why the pink bag acted this way. I spoke with fellow 9A gardeners and there is a lot of dry woody material in the pink bags. So keep an eye out on your plants and maybe add supplemental Nitrogen (blood meal) to the plants during the growing season if it looks like they’re struggling.
@1luckychica1

Yes, i used this last year too. I personally think it did fairly well with tomatoes but some other things not so much. I had a lot of days ranging from 100 to 120 and i constantly had to shade cloth even when it was 90. It seemed like as the soil got used it got more bark like. I had some of this left over so i mixed it with land and sea compost.

One of our favorite ideas we had for window covering on our garage window which is in the very same location as yours was to find used plantation shutters on Marketplace as they don’t need to be installed as precisely as inside your home and you can make it work just fine with a little innovation. Hi Janey! The new window is beautiful! I love your raised beds in the back too! That’s a great idea to use your full sun space for more planting. I do 95% of my shopping at HD. It’s what is close and convenient. I buy that exact soil all the time! I have 2 (4’x4’) raised beds in my backyard and 2 (3’x7’) raised beds in my front and all are filled with that soil. The only thing I noticed this year is I have little mushrooms that come and go. Supposedly it’s ok and you let them decompose back in. It really bugged me at first! But my plants (mostly veggies) do amazingly well. I can’t wait to see what you put in, I’m sure it will be beautiful!!

I’m not Janey. But I’m from a place not far from Davis. Where I grew up, winters were cool, gray, and fairly wet, frost all over the grass and roofs in the morning, but it doesn’t stay below freezing in the day (more likely the 50s midday, Fahrenheit), and it snows like once every 10 years (and never sticks!) Since Davis is a city that is a bit farther inland than the town I grew up in, it may get a bit colder there, especially in January. And the whole state is in a massive drought, and a couple years ago we had ONE wet winter following a severe drought that lasted several years, so I would say that now winters in Northern California (all of California) are consistently dry.

when using Potting mix use gloves and a face mask, because of Legonaires disease. A famous gardener even though he protected himself died from it. In Australia they have warnings on the packets of all potting mix. I don't know if your country has the same.

oh Janey - me and you both! i bought an umbrella when i got my house - because i thought i needed it. well, my oak provides plenty of shade most of the time - however, i used it mostly to protect us when we sit outside in the fall when the acorns are coming down, and i'm using it to shade some of my plants. ⛱ 7bNC

I do love the look of those raised beds! For sure a lot of soil to fill them--the tip about the rocks is great. Also, where did you get your umbrella? Have you had any issues with wind wanting to tip it over?

Hi Danika! I got it at HD as well! 😆🤦🏼♀️ It’s just the closest big box store so I end up getting sooo many things from there! It does tip over in the wind so if we are using it we weigh the bottom down or if we are not using it we just lay it down on the ground.

You don't need weed control fabric. Where would they come from? So, you don't need to do that again if you get another one.

Hi Nita! The weed control fabric isn’t for weeds, it’s to keep the soil separate from the rocks so it doesn’t plug the holes. Sorry I should have explained that better!

Love this video! I have seen these stock tanks before, in fact our Lowes actually has ( or maybe had at this point) in stock. I realize after seeing your video that I could put them in an area where I would never plant as the soil has a lot of rocks (I heard it was an old road bed years ago) I tried and have to use a pick axe! So this would be a perfect spot for them. Would I get the bottomless ones and just line with landscape fabric? Thanks! PS My pool parts have been delivered!!

Yay for the pool Jo! I bet you are just counting down the days for you to be able to use it! I would say go with the bottomless ones in that area! I bet some of your plants could make their way through to the native soil!
