The rich and spirited discussions on Day 1 of the Central Bank Payments Conference here in Kuala Lumpur set a high bar which has continued here on Day 2.
The morning kicked off with a dynamic panel on CBDC and tokenization featuring Sonja Davidovic of the Bank for International Settlements - BIS Innovation Hub, Dirk Bullmann (CLS Group), Tim Hermans (National Bank of Belgium), Banque de France’s Claudine Hurman and moderated by Leo Lipis (Lipis Advisors).
Mr Hermans remained on stage for a těte-à-tète with Central Bank Payments Conference Chair Jean-Michel Godeffroy for an in-depth conversation on the development of the #digitaleuro and how the Eurosystem is approaching the issue of user adoption.
Sriram Chatty, Global Head of Payments with Tata Consultancy Services, delivered the morning’s keynote address on the transformative role AI is set to play in central banking and payments market infrastructures.
Prior to breaking for lunch, a pair of panel discussions on #stablecoins and the extension of #RTGS system operating hours held sway. Jean Clement (European Central Bank), Nita Omanga (Central Bank of Kenya), and Graeme Donald (retired, Lloyds Bank) offered their perspectives on whether RTGS systems should move 24/7 and the challenges and opportunities of doing so. Meanwhile, the public (Dominik Smoniewski, National Bank of Belgium) and private sectors (Yam Ki Chan, Circle) were both represented during the discussion on stablecoins, how they are and should be regulated, and where they fit within the global financial system.
