This is so incredibly helpful. Weather mods are this huge mystery for someone like me, still fairly new to modding -- they're one of those things I know from all the attention they get that they'll make a huge difference in game... but why & how is a big complicated mess to sort through. They touch so much, and it's hard to get a sense of what they really do from reading the mod pages. I appreciate that you're giving us a place to start.

played skyrim for about 2 hours when i bought it back around 2014. said to myself, lets see the mods, i've heard some things. spend the two years browsing mods and learning the basics of modding. was determined to not play it until perfectly modded for maximum immersion. the ultimate survival, realistic fights, challenging run. Special edition lands and all mods obsolete, plus i'd have to wait for SE mods to catchup. shelved it. Just started again end of last year name matching the old mods i had saved. looks like SE mods have caught up. I finished collecting 1045 mods and organised into category folders. Now to start modding this monster. glad i found your channel. will be a great help.

@OpenWorldAddict0

I am looking forward to what you have to show us in this mini-series. I agree with what you are looking for in weather mod with all but a few exceptions. 1. I don't want a weather mod that will make it foggy or rainy almost every day. I am not a rain loving person in real life, and when I take my character into an inn early for the night to wait for the next morning, I find it unpleasant when the next morning it is raining again, and then the next day, and the next. It might be more realistic to have an area that is supposed to get a lot of rain to have it rain frequently but to have it raining almost every single day just sours my mood when I play and tempts me to go for that console command that clears the weather. Also, one of the things I enjoy most about this game is traveling from place to place and seeing gorgeous sights and vistas that inspire me as I go, but there are no sights and vistas to see in fog, no matter how light or dense it is. Fog just makes things feel gloomy and thus having every day to be a completely foggy day just makes me miserable. I don't mind having a little fog in the early morning in wet areas such as near lakes, waterfalls, in the bays, and on the coast; but by mid to late morning that fog should burn off allowing me to see the gorgeous landscapes that Skyrim has in abundance. 2. about the clouds, I don't enjoy being taken by surprise when a storm hits (whether it's a heavy rainstorm or Blizzard), especially if i am spending time looking at my surroundings and looking at the sky. I would like to be given a chance to tell when a storm is on the way so that if I am paying attention I could make plans to take shelter 'before' it hits.I am weather enthusiast in real life and when i am out and about, there are times (if I am paying attention) that I can tell when a storm is coming. So it is a bit jarring to be hit by a storm when just a moment before it was a nice clear day. (not to say that storms don't surprise in real life; they do; but I am almost always surprised by a storm when playing Skyrim with weather mods, which is unpleasant.)

Beautiful puppo! Probably on your radar anyways, but Cathedral Weather is my all time-favourite specifically for its sunsets. I usually replace its night skies with the 4k Milky Way Cathedral Night Skies, as a personal preference. Don't forget to pick-up the MCM; you can tweak everything via power, which will allow you to observe changes in real time, but the MCM helps keep everything neat. Cathedral Weather: www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/24791 cathedral Night Skies: www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/20301 Cathedral Weather MCM: www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/24940 One big drawback of Cathedral Weathers is that it is incompatible with certain ENB features. More on this here: www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/25160 For what it's worth, I would like to hear you highlight some of your favourite parts about each weather mod as you review them.

ENB is the reason I switched to SweetFX. I think "SweetHD - Skyrim" looks really good. It disables the blur effect and makes the game world sharper, while not changing the colour scheme. For my weather, I like to use "Cathedral Weathers & Seasons". The brightness and colour scheme can be controlled via a power that is applied to the character, so no need for a darker night mod either.

Well, I regret your choice of not showing ENB weathers. I think the really good ones blow non-ENB weathers out of the water. Take a look at oldrim NLA. It just looked more realistic then every weather mod out there, the colors where just incredibly natural (other weather and lighting mods will mess up the colors though, so I advise trying it without any of those). ENB is not just a filter, it is much more then that. The lighting effects like Sub Surface Scattering, Sunlight and SSAO approximate real world light behavior. Our eyes are incredibly sensitive to light behavior, that's why a well configured ENB will look better then a mere filter suite like SweetFX. Adaptation is also an important factor in creating "realistic" lighting. This is also why well done ENB weather mods can instill a sense of presence that other weather mods can't. Look at NLA on a calibrated monitor. It doesn't look like some game or yet another "artist" playing with the color controls leaving an artificial scene. It enhances the sense of really being there, in a norse country on a cold day with a sunset looking like a real sunset, all the colors spot on. There are some SE weather ENBs that try to recreate the NLA experience, but I forgot what they are named. I do recommend to change the SSAO values though, as most ENBs (including NLA) chose an artistic approach. But Boris' SSAO is actually an incredibly good indirect lighting approximation at default values (maybe increase SSAO intensity to 1.2 to hide object transitions a little).

This is a great one, Michael. Especially since you mentioned "compare performance" - aesthetics will always be ultimately down to personal preference (but still a great thing to have in a showcase), it's performance that I real want to see comparison. Are weather mods really that different in terms of it?

Sad ELFX Weathers is not listed. I know it has its limitations, but I have tried most of the others and IMHO this is still the one I prefer, partly because its the only one with much darker nights that keeps sneak detection mechanics balanced. ELFX Weather's low contrast problems can be fixed by disabling Skyrim's godrays and increasing brightness by +40 in imaginator.

All i want that he hasn't provided to date (i could be wrong as this is Michael here) is education on how to inject my own personal music selections from Aurora Aksnes into the game (for SSE), when she sings in Old Norse she is Nord/Viking lighter side fantasy epic sound to the core. Stjernestov, and Vinterens Gate both written by her would be awesome as she does them both in Norwegian, knowing pretty much zero Norwegian immersion is a non issue for me lol. Some guy made a mod featuring some of Wardrunas music as Skyrim backtrack, what he "didn't" do is include the Helvegen version that she opened and then background vocaled, bah lol, heresy, to his credit he uploaded it before she actually collaborated with them on it i believe, so yea, update anyone.?^^
