I agreed with a lot of your points. I would recommend you showing images of what episodes you’re talking about. You referenced episode 6, but I barely remember what that was, it will be harder for people who haven’t watched the show. Also I liked Zhao’s actor because of his natural delivery. He has his own interpretation on the character instead of just trying to copy the cartoon.

I kinda had a feeling about this show when they first announced it. I knew it was never going to be able to live up to the animated series but I was still (cautiously) optimistic that they could deliver a decent adaptation. Unfortunately, the writers seem to think their target "more mature" audience needs to be constantly exposited at while the cartoon from almost 20 years ago has more respect for its audience's intelligence.

if you're gonna have the nerve as a company (as netflix) to see the creators of the original cartoon walk away from your project and still have the arrogance to go through with it, it better be the best piece of media that has ever graced our f**king screens... it better be the most iconic that we've ever seen... the cartoon was groundbreaking when it comes to animation... the adaptation should have been groundbreaking when it comes to live action... it will be graded hard because the showrunners pissed in the original creators' faces... it is garbage

Appreciate a review that takes this shitstorm of a show at face value. For me the shiftiness of the writing boils down to literally day 1 of any writing class that tells you to show NOT tell. Absolute garbage from acting, writing, and flow and so much more all culminating in a cringe, lifeless, boring show. It sucks on its own. Aang’s acting is horrid and the attempts at jokes can barely be considered humor; Katara is literally a nothing character; Sokka’s comedy is practically non-existent, and he’s way too serious + his relationship side plots feel disingenuous and somehow more rushed than the animated show; Iroh feels like an entirely different character. Tired of people saying don’t compare to the animated show and in the same motion saying it did a much better job than the movie. Regardless, saying it’s better than the movie shouldn’t be something to praise.

They completely ruined Zhao and Iroh. I'm honestly struggling to understand whether it was because the acting was sub par, or the cast didn't even bother to watch the original and study the original characters, or the downright offensively bad dialogues. Probably a combination of all of the above. I was pissed at what they did to Roku. WTF were they thinking??? Like I don't get it at all. The actor who played Sokka was trying his best despite the awlful dialogues and honestly he was one of the highlights for me. But Katara though... Jeez everything was wrong about her from the character to the dialogues to the actress.

Then why not show scenes of Zuko learning about the avatars? Dont you think that would be a better way to flesh out his character while also giving a reason to why Aang needs Zuko and his knowledge? (Sokka and Kataras personal battles can work but they suck in the actual show)They SAY Zuko knows a lot about the avatars of the past but they never explain why or how he does. It is so interesting why you guys keep talking like you expected something on the level of the original show. The live action would never be that, we already knew that. So why keep comparing it to that? Let me answer for you: cause if you judge the show by itself, it is good. Of course there are various things to improve( the delivery of some dialogues, Katara is too bland, too much condensing in some parts, Azula's actress needs to do better) but you act lile it was bad, but it was not. The right score is the audience score you can read on Rotten Tomatoes, which is 7.5. Judgin this show as "insufficient" is lying, that's all.

Definitely didn't destroy the source material...? Like, excuse me? Did we watch the same show? Just to name a few points off the top of my head: -They dumbed down Zhao to the point that he was this weasel puppet that Azula was pulling the strings of. They butchered his character to try to raise up Azula! -Speaking of *Azula*, they made her a whiny teenager with insecurities for miles. Did they forget that she controlled people with fear? She was borderline psychopathic, always had an edge, always appeared confident and never showed weakness. That all comes from being a child prodigy...yet, nah, let's just make her a stereotypical teenager. Oh! But give her all of Zhao's feats because we don't want to make her too pathetic. -They ruined Bumi! He was someone that helped Aang think outside the box, a dear friend, and someone from his past life that help propel him forward. Aang needed this to move forward with optimism in a world that seemed almost hopeless and angry at him for leaving. But NO! Let's let Aang be the one to teach him a lesson. What was even the point of him then? They could've just scrapped him and it wouldn't have made a difference in this plot. -They straight up MURDERED Hakoda. Like, he was a kind, strong warrior that set out to fight in the war with a heavy heart because he missed and loved his children. But sure! Let's have him be disappointed in Sokka because he needed some sort of character development after they took away all of his struggles. I'm not even going to get into Sokka's character arc, or lack thereof... -WTF did they do to my girl Suki?? They made her this thirsty simp for this guy that she initially didn't even care for! I loved the OG couple from the animated series because their relationship was so natural...Here, they really forced that relationship and made her look like a creep in the process. -KATARA. Omg Katara...She might as well be absent from the series because they took away her motivation, character struggles and personality. She is this lifeless, bland character that glides through passively for plot convinience. Because God forbid that a teenager have passion! That wouldn't be too realistic. So, lets strip her of everything that makes her a girl boss and mute her down a few notches so that her costars can shine. I swear to God if they do that shit to Toph... -And lastly, Aang. I didn't mind him too much in the adaptation but they did do him a complete disservice. To start, they took away his initial reservations on becoming the avatar. As a result, he "went out for air" and then got caught in a storm. And that just...takes away all the impact from his disappearance. In the animated series, he CHOSE to leave and in the adaption, it was an "accident". Second, he *flys*. Flys! That hurt my soul to watch. Why even use his glider then?? And on a last note, they took away all the chemistry between the three. Aang came back to the world a 100 years later, scared and alone, losing his entire culture and people. He has no one, yet these two siblings offered him solace by becoming his family. All that was lost... Katara and him have zero chemistry and they're all just sort of traveling together because why not? Help the world's last hope? Eh, I guess. This post is already too long, but they butchered the Avatar State and the Avatars themselves. But sure, "they definitely didn't destroy the source material". I mean, at least they pronounced 'Aang' right, amirite?

Critic is not the same as complainer. You seem to not understand the difference. If you, and I have, watched the show v the live action, this actually holds up pretty well. They made a pretty good adaptation to live action. I totally disagree with the bad actor take you have, I thought they did well. They pretty much looked like the characters, tho a couple were a little "thicker" than as portrayed, BUT they were side characters not given much screen time in season 1 and given the time span, and the realities of aging of young actors, I expect some of them could get in better shape. Ya, Mai is the biggest example of it. But even in the show, mei and Ty were nothing more than Ezulas cheerleaders for seasons 2 and most of 3. You are not a critic, you are just a complainer. which is fine, but its silly....the show was pretty good for what it was. What did you expect exactly?

Pfff "they pretty much look like their characters". Looking the part does not equal good acting. The main trio are still young though, so they have time to improve... I'd feel totally disconnected too if I had to spit out corny lines and randomly release exposition dumps to help further the plot.

They might have toned down some aspects of some characters, and played more with others, but they were recogniable as the characters from the cartoon....for me, that is all I care about. @@shadowmancer99 You are the first and only person that I've ever heard of actually *liking* the exposition... But to each their own. The thing is, though, a good story doesn't need to rely on exposition dumps. Nobody talks like that in real life and it makes for some really awkward dialogue. Yes, it does help to fill in the gaps (to people new to Avatar, at least), but it's being spoon-fed to the audience. Maybe that's your thing (I'm not judging) but that leaves little to the imagination. Too much of anything makes for a negative experience, because, naturally, you're going to need a little exposition with any form of world-building. However, they over-do it to the extreme. As for no race swapping/gender swapping...Your standards are too low if that's your meter for it being good. I guarantee you that if the M. Night movie did not exist, that would not be the case. That is the bare, bare minimum for ANY adaptation. And I'll admit, the characters look pretty spot-on (with the exception of Azula and her friends...). They did a great job with the casting for this show. Now THAT I can attest to. I have to disagree on the "woke" inserts, though. They stamped that shit ALL over this adaptation, and it's sad. Watering down Katara so that she's solely a "warrior" (Ohhh how they love to use that word in this show) is the epitome of a superficial girl boss. When you mentioned them toning down some characters, you made a huge understatement. They completely stripped them of imperfections, character struggles and, in turn, character arcs. It's the same thing that they've been doing in Disney adaptations...taking away any flaws to elevate a character (usually female). Except here, they also did it with Aang (all grown up, no character growth needed) and Yue (Culture be damned, she's going to break all customs and no one is going to question it. But JUST her, though. Can't have a main character not be woke, especially not a girl). It's a bit of a stretch to call this a "faithful adaptation", but it does do a great job. Visually. So, yes, I will give credit where credit is due. It's just that there isn't much credit to give...

@@lgz371See, I think that we now live in a world where people find it WAY too easy to shit on things rather than just sit back and enjoy them. Given the current state of many projects, NOT race swapping or gender bending is a huge plus. And I dont really care for the attitude that "flaws" make characters interesting. In fact, characters did have their flaws, but as I see it they werent over done...and I didnt see the exposition as over down either. I enjoy the telling of the story, and if someone is going to essentially add some "thought bubbles" along the way its cool. Coming in cold, which you MUST assume for movie/series, you need to give the audience enough meat to understand what the hell is going on and why. Avatar has a LOT of moving parts, characters, and motivations. In a shortened timeframe, giving that efficiently through the characters is fine. And the dialogue was a HELL of a lot closer to the original than the movie. I suppose we are on opposite ends of the spectrum. I dont watch things for the express purpose of cutting it ribbons. Yes, if it was trash I would say so, but I rewatched the cartoon v the series and as an adaption given the limitation of reality, I'm fine with how things went. I'd happily watch two more seasons. They did what I want in an adaption...kept the cores of the characters from looks to attitudes and was faithful to the source materials. Cant ask for more...and yes, I did notice the toned down sexism from Sokka, and I agree that was too bad, but if that is the worst of it well again in relative context of modern projects, its not too bad. I just dont see need to shit on literally EVERYTHING. Not when there ARE plenty of projects that wont do the simple things fans ACTUALLY want.

If I was only shitting on it or “complaining,” I wouldn’t provide examples on why things are bad and compare it to the original and the movie, I wouldn’t mention the good things and good castings, I wouldn’t have mentioned ways that I could see improvements upon what they already have. Look everyone can have their own opinions but saying that all I’m doing is complaining is honestly kind of funny. If you were to make a video as long as mine praising the entire show, I wouldn’t be in your comment section saying that you’re glazing hard core and you’re “not a true fan” like some of these other people in the other comment sections that I’ve seen. Still at least you’re literate and can actually articulate your points, unlike some other comments I’ve seen lol. My point is that this is not avatar, this is not a faithful adaptation, and at best, standing on its own, it’s mid. The argument that comparison between all of the adaptations isn’t fair and rather you should look at it on its own isn’t valid imo. I’m not even going to mention your “woke” argument, people that genuinely fall back onto that are just funny imo. One last thing, calling Mei and Ty Lee basically just cheerleaders to Azula really shows your lack of observation when it comes to how complex these characters and their emotions are.

Theres another instance of a bender in Korra but I barely remember that one.
