Dream Theater is a musician's band... progressive metal kings and were influenced heavily by classic progressive bands like Rush... Yes ... Genesis ... King Crimson... Pink Floyd... as well as heavy metal bands like Metallica... Queensryche ... Megadeth ... Fates Warning... Formed as the band Majesty in 1985 when John Petrucci (guitar) and John Myung (bass) attended Berklee College of music and met Mike Portnoy (drums)... They wrote and recorded original demos and played occasional shows until the band was signed in 1988 and recorded their debut album 'When dream and day unite'... They changed the band name to Dream Theater after a movie house in California where Mike Portnoy's dad lived and released the album in 1989 w/ Kevin Moore (keyboards) and Charlie Dominici (vocals)... but the album was a crude effort (but showed promise musically) & failed to sell and was never promoted by their record company. Dream Theater kept writing and recording demos into 1991 and finally found James LaBrie (vocals) as their permanent singer... Their second album 'Images and words' was released in 1992 and they began touring for the first time... "Pull me under" was a hit single in '92 on radio, then on MTV and 'Images and words' sold gold in the US (half million copies) and sold strongly in Europe and Japan. Keyboardist Kevin Moore left Dream Theater in 1994 after recording their 3rd album 'Awake'... Derek Sherinian (keyboards) joined between 1994 and 1998... but subsequent records like 'Falling into infinity' in 1997 failed to sell up to expectations. Frustrated w/ the music business, Dream Theater opted to record a concept album based on the 1992 song 'Metropolis Part 1' w/ Jordan Rudess (keyboards) joining the band permanently... 'Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a memory' was released in 1999 and the band performed it in entirety on tour and commanded a loyal fanbase that flocked to their shows across the world. Dream Theater became more ambitious musically w/ the double CD "Six degrees of inner turbulence' in 2002 and the heavy record 'Train of thought' in 2003 ... It was followed by the album 'Octavarium' in 2005 as Dream Theater celebrated their 20th anniversary as a band. In 2007, Dream Theater's commercial sales rose quickly after the release of their 9th album 'Systematic Chaos' ('The dark eternal night' was from this album)... followed by the top 10 (and 10th) album in the US - 'Black clouds & silver linings'. In 2010, drummer Mike Portnoy announced that he was leaving Dream Theater to focus on other musical projects. In 2011, Dream Theater announced that Mike Mangini (drums) was hired to replace Mike Portnoy and the album 'A dramatic turn of events' was another successful album... followed by the self-titled 'Dream Theater' album in 2013... and a cinematic double CD concept record 'The Astonishing' in 2016... Dream Theater lost none of their appeal after the albums 'Distance over time' in 2019... followed by 'A view from the top of the world' in 2021... They won their first Grammy Award for the song 'The Alien' in 2022 for 'Best Metal performance'. In 2023, the band announced that original drummer Mike Portnoy was rejoining Dream Theater and would work on a new album in 2024... ousting Mike Mangini in the process. They announced an overseas tour w/ their new album completed and due out soon.

Please please please check out The Count Of Tuscany by Dream Theater. It’s a prog metal masterpiece with tear inducing solos and the most beautiful tones I’ve e we heard in my life. Dream Theater is second only to Tool in my mind, although I would consider every member of Dream Theater to be a virtuoso!

Check out the album Train of thought from these guys… it’s all awesome… if not the whole album check out as I am, dying soul, or in the name of god… and keep in mind half the “guitar” soloing you will hear is actually the keyboard player.

always loving your honest reactions! the music isn‘t overwhelming“ made my day👍 turning 50 this year - and been listening to my fab5 since 92, seen them 10-15 times live here in germany and i am looking forward for the new album with mike portnoy again. from their 94 masterpiece (every album is) „awake“ you should listen to the three-part song „a mind beside itself“, where we have great instrumentals („erotomania“), powerful intense stuff („voices“) followed by the beautiful „silent man“

I am glad you liked this song from one of my favorite bands. You jumped into the deep end with this track and you swam and enjoyed it. Excellent! Another side of them that's a little more accessible is "Under A Glass Moon". I think you would like it. 👍

Get ready for THE BEST overall band for the last 20 years, which you NEVER heard on the radio. Also, all their side project groups are great too. The closest thing that comes a little close to comparison is Rush. Rush IS my favorite band and Dream Theater my 2nd. I am 59 and been with dream theater since their second album. Enjoy

thank you for the reaction to my favorite band. this song is just about an ancient pharaoh. nothing too deep. they went fantasy route that album. BUT, speaking of anime characters, they have a twopart song called "in the presence of enemies" which is an adaptation of the beginning of a korean manwha called "priest". maybe you'll like it even more.

What type of music you truly enjoy will define what songs you like from DT. They're all over the map, kind of like Smashing Pumpkins but with a shit ton more talent (Technically). Billy Corgan's writing is damn near flawless in the 90s. Every album has a different sound so it totally depends on what type of metal / prog/ music / etc that you enjoy. My personal favorite is Metropolis Pt2 and The Astonishing. I could give you 2nds and 3rds but there's no point.

It's not, however as he said, he enjoys multipart long songs. That's pretty much most of the catalog of dream theater. Going with that. I HIGHLY recommend A Change of Seasons, 20+ min long epic with multiple parts including excerpts from Dead Poets Society. It's also a song that personally got me through a lot during a dark time in my life.

This song lacks cohesiveness. It has impressive musicianship, but doesn't have the relatable sound that their 1992 album Images and Words had, with songs like, "Metropolis-part 1" and "Pull Me Under."

@@MugnifyRTS He's wrong, anyone will understand with enough attentive listens, that's why Dream Theater grows on you more as you listen and your ear adapt & gets used to more complex arrangements. My favorite bands have been System of a Down and Dream Theater so i understand the connection you made there. It's hard to explain but there's affinity in the taste, creativity and sometimes craziness between these 2 bands.
