The singer said he wrote the song about a time when he lived in Australia, in an apartment, and he lived on the bad side of town, and he lived next to drug dealers, and sometimes other drug dealers would get his apartment mixed with the actual drug dealers next door…he said that so many people would knock at his door, and it unnerved him to the point he never wanted to answer the door. He was terrified. So basically the song is about being paranoid.

Today I think this would be diagnosed as anxiety. Which might be why it resonates so strongly with me. Glad you moved beyond Down Under. While that is a good song it kinda sells that 80's Paul Hogan Australiana image that is such a small portion of Australian culture. As others have mentioned Overkill is probably the next one from these guys. A very mellow tune.

"Down Under" will hit you as the fun quirky song, but "Who Can It Be Now" is honestly the one with staying power. If you spin it a couple of times, you will grow to love it, especially if the audio quality is better than in that video.

Another great Aussie band: The Easybeats from the 60s. With lead singer Steven Wright, not the deadpan comic though he is a funny dancer in the video Friday on My Mind. Very Beatlesque.

Gotta disagree I’ve been to thousands of concerts and Lead Singer Colin Hay had the best storytelling show I’ve ever seen! He is one of the greatest singer songwriters ever. “overkill” solo acoustic is amazing and also there’s a band version. Story of my life

You guys really should listen to Quarterflash- Harden my heart for a Female Friday. She play that sax like no other. To see her play it would be a live version. She doesn’t show her playing it in her music video. It very impressive and I think you guys will like it. Especially since you like the sax. ☺️

Please give me a xmas gift of oingo boingo, dead mans party or just another day. You all like that funky 80s vibe well they have it. Their music was in many movies in the 80s ,the lead singer is Jack skelingtons voice and makes the music for almost every Tim Burton movie. Please play their music. Dead mans party is a cool song.

Some other Men At Work songs worth listening to are Overkill, Underground, and It's a Mistake. You should also look for Colin James Hay's solo work.

When I was in high school I legit was in a big bathroom with my best friend (cause we were incapable of going alone) she was still in the stall, I picked out what I THOUGHT were her shoes, I knocked three times, she got it and sang “Who can it be now” over and over from her stall (which was actually EPIC!) I jerked my head in the direction of her voice realizing I had the wrong stall at the same time the person in the stall I knocked on said, “GOOD GRIEF, may I have more than 5 seconds?” and my friend just kept singing! There was a pause while my friend sang that line 3 times with sax sound affects, I started to say, I am so sorry but EVERYBODY laughed in that bathroom and the people waiting in line! Then I started laughing and laughed so hard I cried. To this day I see my friend, almost 40 years later and I will sing, “Who can it be now” and we lose it. She always reminds me that her most embarrassing moments of LIFE were with me, I tell her I got her out of her shell! She will say, I was really into the song, including sound affects with the sax, and everybody STARTED laughing, I thought they were laughing at my singing, I am still traumatized! I have another high school bathroom story with that same friend that is so embarrassing but perhaps another one of your videos will make me think of it?!?! 😂 💗

LOL...It's NOT that difficult to understand the story in the song. It is literal. It's not metaphoric or a play on words. You younger people think there has to be some underlying message in classic songs, especially from the 80's and earlier. Same with their accompanying video clips. They don't have to make sense nor do they have to follow what the song is about!
