I am looking forward to trying this filtration system in a few monts when I move and have to reset my tanks. My tank is full of plants, they grow like crazy and I constantly have to cut them back. I have a sump that's bigger than the tank, I have a hang on back filter. Point is I still need to do frequent water changes, plants are not the end up be all. Part of the enjoyment of this hobby is testing things out, the people who judge without at least trying things out are missing out on the possibility of making their tanks better and healthier. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

I noticed that my lily pipes and glass on the aquarium don’t really have to be cleaned as often. Basically that means less maintenance for me.

I have been watching your videos between last night and today. I have a tank with anaerobes in the deep substrate that I've had set up for about a year now it is heavily planted with Corkscrew Valisnaria dwarf sagataria blanketing the bottom and crypts....undulata I think. It is an inch of soil covered by 2 inches of black diamond blasting sand which is much like pool filter sand in price and grain size but its black. Now for a long time until just recently in fact I had a massive problem with string algae first a really fine almost slimy to the touch kind and then later the more course thread algae that I've seen before. I would pull and pull and let me tell you that finer type really sticks to the plants but it would grow back seemingly faster than I could remove it. I blacked out the tank 2 times which made it die back but it would always come back. Then the more regular string algae I spoke of came in and did alright for a bit, much easier to pull but still a nuicense lately however even that is dying back the mystery snails I have in there have spawned and those babies seem to love the string algae...and besides its just no longer as vigorous as it used to be there is still some in there but it seems I am finally winning that battle. I thought maybe it was do to depletion of the nutrients in the soil, but the plants are growing like gangbusters Val that was almost dead has now spread all over crypts are shooting runners dwarf sag is still carpeting So I don't know maybe its finally finding some form of equilibrium. I have 9 rummies 2 angels 7 otos (though there may be less of those now I havent been able to count all 7 in a long time) a colony of glass shrimp, mystery snails and bladdersnails that I assume arrived on the plants. This tank is 20 gallons. I have not seen a nitrate in there in a very long time. I have another just as heavily planted 10 gallon that currently houses a clown pleco and a bolivian ram -it is not deep substrate. Its never had the massive string algae problem the 20 gallon had. But I read nitrates in that tank, and now and again I have to do a water change. I am here to say that its not the plants causing the denitrification of the first tank. ALL of that being said I am very interested in trying your plenum system, do you think it would be possible to do the plenum with landscape fabric then soil and a sand cap to keep the soil from coming up and making a mess? Also I am very interested in your pond filtratration you speak of in this video, have you any videos on here about how to set that up? I have a small probably about 250 gallon pond that I have several Shubunkin and comet gold fish in as well as 2 small koi that I bought last summer..by small I mean currently smaller than most of my goldfish, but I know they will grow and be very large and before long the pond won't be large enough by a long shot. This spring/summer I intend to dig a new much larger pond. As such I am very interested in how to set up a filtration system like you have spoken of here today. Thank you for your interesting and informative vidoes. edit: I forgot to add the 10 gallon smaller tank has duckweed on top and I still register nitrate.

Farmers lament denitrification because it makes soil less fertile. Denitrification by bacteria has to be globally significant. Legume is planted to fix nitrogen from N2 gas. For years I have understood that denitrification is significant in the aquarium; the difficulty was in setting up filtration that allows denitrification (low but not zero oxygen, slow flow but no clogging).

hmm growing anaerobic bacteria on a moving bed with little or no oxygen will indeed help with nitrates but this bacteria takes quite a while to establish ,thoughts also on just having pumice stone and substrates as deep as 4 to 5 inch will also achieve similar results as for light indeed this is a myth that novices endure because the have their tank lights on to long and also may get a temp swing causing co2 rise and algae love that . Very interesting points ,food for thought i would put forward a simple balance is required between tank and animal life do you need a filter in some cases the tank can filter itself if set up with anaerobic converting nitrates into nitrogen this can happen in most ponds due to silt ....subscribed with bated breath.

I started watching your videos last fall and decided to set up a 5.5 gal Betta tank in January. It is now the end of September. The plants are doing well. In addition to the Betta I've added 4 Kuhli loaches, 3 Nerite snails, and finally a month ago 10 Ember Tetras. The tank has about 4 gallons of water in it as I have a plenum built like you showed with bio balls, and 2 1/2 inches of substrate layered as you directed with 1 in. of ine gravel topping it off. I have made two small BCB's that sit on the substrate at the rear of the tank. I never have to feed the Kuhli Loaches as they feed on the small organisms that are living in the gravel. The fish are real healthy and very active. The water tests o ppm NH3 NH4, NO2 0 ppm, NO3 0 ppm. All I run is a small HOB filter with two layers of laminated-course fine- filter media and a layer of 1/2 in poly fill to polish the water. Two months ago I set up a 11.3 g cube in the same manner and it is well on its way also. Thanks so much for your educating us. I have a covering of algae forming on the plants that I thought was cyanobacteria, but is not. I noticed that it is the same color as the spirulina that I feed the brine shrimp, and is forming a thin layer on some of my plants. Is this possible?

Why don't we have a lift tube open and drawing water in at the far end from the proper lift tube? Water would then just pass under the baked clay for the most part. Ions would be drawn past the baked clay and the problem of too high or low of a flow rate to create an anoxic condition is solved for the under gravel filter. The additional flow rate would also filter more water.

You are absolutely correct about the HOB filters. I recently sold my HOB filters from the 80s (Danner Supreme Aquamaster) at an auction. They were all still in working condition. They were referred to as "0% bypass" filters since all the water was forced to pass through the filter media and pads. In today's HOBs, for the most part, the water "brushes" by the filter pads and does not pass through the filter pads. Their proprietary refills are the money makers! In the old HOBs you put in whatever media you wanted.
@anoxicfiltrationplenums
4 жыл бұрын
That’s exactly what I was talking about. I had a supreme Danner filter and it ran 15 years straight with never being turned off not one problem. In fact it got so old the plastic starting cracking just from age. You could load those things up with filter floss and 100% of the water had to go through it, no bypassing the medium and you could get it to filter down to 50 or less microns. Today’s new filters come with a cartridge that you can literally see through and have a teaspoon of carbon in them. They all work off of the same principle using gravity to push the water through the medium instead of pulling the water through the media. It’s nice to talk to an old salt that remembers the good old days.

We use Laterite and cat litter on its intrinsic merit for a specific purpose. They both have a crystalline structure, which is negatively charged (electrovalence) which attracts positive ions like ammonium and removes it out of the bulk water. Constituting that both Laterite and cat litter have the same characteristics and therefore will react the same ions under conditions that would otherwise not give positive results in closed systems if oppositely charges. Cat litter and Laterite as a substrate serve as a critical function in a planted up pond and the Anoxic Filtration System. The Laterite and cat litter has many negatively charged sites; ammonia in the form of ammonium ions is positively charged. Cat litter is used worldwide because of its ability to hold a synthesized form of carbon dioxide and ammonia, the composition of urea from cats CO(NH2)2 that is the chief solid component of mammalian urine. We therefore call this substrate negatively electrically charge, relating to or containing matter in the form of charged atoms or groups of atoms or known as electrovalent bond. A electrovalent bond is nothing more than a chemical bond that is created during the formation of a compound (like that of cat litter or Laterite) by transfer of one or more electrons from one atom to another, the resulting oppositely charged ions being held together by attraction. The water body itself is positively charge, meaning that it has more positive ions than negative ions in its mass. All hobbyist ponds fall into this category and there are no exceptions to this rule. The cat litter and Laterite attracts and holds the ammonium ions like a giant magnet until a plant root hair exchanges another positively charge ion for the ammonium ion (this is called adsorption) and takes it in to metabolize into amino acids and ultimately, protein. No cat litter or Laterite, no negatively charged sites, no easy ammonium ion uptake. Planting any aquatic plant in cat litter and Laterite will definitely ameliorate your plants, pond conditions, and your aquatic animals. The hobbyists that have used this way of planting, find out that just by changing a few fundamentals of their planting habits may turn their ponds clearer and cleaner than it already is. This is because they no longer used the nitrogen tablets, as they did with their old way of planting water lilies and/or aquatic plants. In addition, many pond plants are not amenable to nitrate as a nitrogen source. The more so, since they have not “learned” to use this highest oxidized form of nitrogen because they are spoiled in their indigenous environment by ammonium, which is a great deal healthier for plants. In general, plants need nitrogen as ammonium. If they receive nitrate, they must reduce it to ammonium. This is chemical work. Studies have found that plants that use ammonium/ammonia remove not only phenols from heavily loaded water but cyankali, carbolic acids, detergents and that a number of bacteria can be fought off with water plants. Studies have also shown that plants grown in cat litter and Laterite release oxygen through their roots and keep the substrate of the biocenosis-baskets free of decaying areas. At the same time, they prevent the build-up of marsh gas in the substrate, and prevent it from becoming black. Plant growth in black substrate is not possible. Higher water plants grown this way are even able to eliminate toxic substances. The toxic substances that are destroyed or such substances as phenol, Salicylic Acid, and Potassium Cyanide, from heavily polluted ponds. Research studies have also shown that the roots of the higher water plants grown in cat litter with Laterite dispense substances, which are able to eradicate bacteria and germs causing illness from salmonella and enterococci. Experiments using different water plants and bacteria Escherichia coli and Bacterium coli have proven that millions of pathogenic germs are capable of being destroyed effectively and quickly, in as little as seven to ten days. With the same test, other ways of planting show the number of germs remained constant. We also have the additional benefit of removing ammonium/ammonia. Instead of just “ammonium to nitrite to nitrate” cycle as in other biological filtration methods, we then will bypass “the nitrogen cycle” and its accumulation of high nitrate (NO3) levels. We must also remember that the center of the biocenosis-basket negative-charge becomes exceedingly stronger with added depth, which makes it attract a greater number of positive ions than the outer parameters of the biocenosis-basket. This increased magnetic pull will them aid in the diffusion of molecules, expediting them out of the water column. For those biocenosis-baskets that do not have any plants in them the facultative anaerobes will behave as respiratory heterotrophs when nitrates are exhausted and therefore use the ammonium ion for their carbon needs.

@@anoxicfiltrationplenums Thank you for the detailed response. I have studied the relationship and ion exchange between fungal hyphae and plants as well (my hypothesis is that symbiosis and the age old exchange of nitrates for sugars in fungi and roots are the reason your system would work so effectively. Have you studied the impact of mycelium on root structures or ambient nutrients? They serve as an incredible caché for heavy metals and toxins alike... to the extent that they bioaccumulate many substances to dangerous degrees for mammals even. So for with your system, just adding your micros/metals for the root feeding plants is sufficient? Lastly, I was curious how water column feeding plants tend to do in these sort of systems (tank set up, rather than ponds, specifically)? They do not become starved of ammonia / nitrogen based nutrients?

Biocenosis baskets attract ammonia in towards the Laterite. Bugs within innermost zone switch to (my favorite expression) the dimorphic metabolism of facultative anaerobic.......(yeah that one). They use the ammonia directly as a nutrient. Plants in planted baskets use ammonia as a nutrient. The Laterite also attracts in nitrate (NO3) and phosphate (PO4). Them facultative bugs also need oxygen so they steal it from nitrate and phosphate. What all that means is that nothing comes out except nitrogen gas. Nitrogen gas is harmless and your aquarium is full of it anyway so this extra amount is gassed off just like excess carbon dioxide from fish respiration.

That is that startup algae you get with new tank setups. I had a small hang on the back filter at startup. Had no UG or canister filter going. Now it’s going away and not coming back.

@@anoxicfiltrationplenums Yeah they've been around for some time now so you should have a good experience. I've always had to rely on shipping because im in NJ. I had a quick question for you on the anoxic filter. How many baskets would I need for a 240g tank that has a 40g sump? I'm going to make them and know I'll probably need more than one but not sure how many would suffice. Thank you!

Been using anoxic filtration for over 2 years in a 350 imo gallon discus aquarium. I top up the water as water evaporates.
