My burning desire to travel to Japan developed when I was 5 years old. That would have been in 1989. It was greatly influenced by video games from Nintendo and cars from Nissan. Other things appeared that made me want to go there even more. I became fascinated with what was and wasn't sold in the USA since the late 1990s. Using search engines which were popular before Google led to interesting results. We could see bits and pieces of things that were translated differently, but never the whole story. I also read that the Nissan 240SX had a 2.0L turbo engine in Japan, and I refused to believe it. I had some friends who were huge otaku, so I had an idea. I said "If we ever get to go to Japan, let's bring back a genuine school uniform as proof of the trip."

Jesse I’m a 3000GT owned as well a couple things I recommend is check your rack and pinion from personal experience I got mine and a day later I put it on a lift to find out it’s completely blown out barely holding on so I’d check that also if you get any of them older than 1996 get ready to learn how to read your error codes from your obd 1 port with a multimeter there’s videos on how to do it also another thing the all wheel drive models so the VR-4 have a tendency to destroy their rear differential if it doesn’t have its regular maintenance done so when you’re test driving make sure there is no grinding from the rear diff or metal clacking sounds and immediately service your diff as soon as you get it home if you get the VR-4 also this applies to any car with a timing belt check the timing belt when you’re looking at the car if I remember correctly it’s two 10mm bolts that hold on the upper front cover and you can pull it off and look at it if it looks good then you’re golden man enjoy your amazing badass Mitsubishi 3000gt VR-4 that will smoke a Supra from the same age stock vs stock

My dad has a 3kGT vr-4, we maintain it very well, and only take it out occasionally, but when we do we beat the shit out of it. It only has 80k miles cause it wasn’t running for ten years cause we never had time or money to fix it. It was no major engine failure, just the crank sensor went out, but it was a pain in the ass to fix. It’s been running strong for years, although the active aero, and sport/ tour suspension doesn’t work, but it doesn’t need to to have fun :)

I had a buddy that owned a 91 VR4 in the pearl white...such a beautiful car. He decided early on that he didn’t care much for the complexity of the car, so he removed the active aero, installed coil overs, and disabled the rear wheel steering. After that he replaced the whole exhaust system, did an intake, a blow-off valve, and had it professionally tuned. For being as heavy as it was, when he was in low rpm the car was super fast and had very little lag. Considering you can buy a nice lower mileage one on BaT in the high teens it’s a real 90s Japanese sports car bargain.

First car was a 5-speed '92 3000GT SL! Yes, I also had to painfully admit it wasn't a turbo... but I got the car for F R E E when my grandfather decided he wanted something more reasonable. It was a HUGE blessing and I totally admit that I was a spoiled grandson... though I *was* very thankful and appreciative for that amazing gift. Jet Li, as a named it, met its end one night when driving 80 in a 45. As I saw my turn coming up, I pressed the brake pedal which promptly sank straight to the floor. I had the wherewithal to quickly engine brake and pull the emergency brake, so I (miraculously) didn't crash. Once carefully coasting it to a mechanic, we discovered that a brake line junction had blown behind the engine. It was so buried behind so many corroded bits of engine hardware that I realized I would never repair it without totaling the car in broken parts. Sold it as a parts car for $900, and I miss it every day.

From a 3000GT owner it's a very rewarding and gratifying experience building up one of these things to be something awesome and they are so much fun but they are also a headache they're notorious for being unreliable I have one of the cleanest ones I've seen in the area and I'm still spending 5,000 every couple of years on repairs on average. I just did a 60k tune up not too long ago about 5000 miles ago and that includes the water pump the timing belt and the tensioner. The tensioner just failed and I jumped timing and basically destroyed the engine. Then I find out the tensioner was not under any type of warranty or anything. So basically these cars are super expensive to fix and anytime you do something you are rolling the dice with an old car especially this one. Sure you could have a shop do your 60k for like freaking $1,200 but having a shop do everything gets super expensive and I'm pretty sure the warranty I'm at tensioner is only like a year anyway so if it slips after that you're in the same boat with a blown engine. I had so much fun with mine and I'd recommend it to anyone at I'd still I had so much fun with mine and I'd recommend it to anyone at I'd I had so much fun with mine and I'd recommend it to anyone at I'd still say it I had so much fun with mine and I'd recommend it to anyone I'd still say it was definitely worth the experience but if you're someone who's younger or is in a financial situation dont have it as your main car and be stuck tfying to get to work ome day... Lol

What brand of parts u use? Personally only use OEM for timing belt n timing belt 60k service parts such as the tensioner as U said. Yes it can be expensive but U only have to do it once every 60k or 5 years or if ur not driving it much once every 8 years or so depending on ur situation. U can get OEM kit from dealer Cherry Hill Kia Mitsubishi with all the OEM parts for a lil over 300 bucks not bad..then have a reliable mechanic install it right. Also as long as U keep up with ur oil changes n basic maintenance even if the tensioner fucks up n blown engine due to timing U can still get a decent engine for a lil under or a lil over 1 grand.....(using ur old engine as a trade in core) main thing if ur turbos if those get blown they can cost U more than the engine. Like to know what brand tensioner U used...USE only OEM! thanks

@@FitmentIndustries Why were your cars always broke? confused as to why? The only time in over 20 years of daily driving mine that I was broke down on the road was a flat tire. That is it. I have always done preventive maintenance mainly the every 60k miles timing belt, oil pump and water pump change. And I always run Rotella T6 synthetic oil in both and I change the oil once a year which is about 5k miles per year I put on each of them. I also change out the transfer case oil once a year. That way I also keep tabs on if it is leaking. Which I never had a problem with. The trannys work fine in both one is a 6 speed the other a 5 speed. Both still have the original turbos. All the extra electronic functions like adjustable suspension and active exhaust and active aero all still work as new. Power windows and power door locks all work. Both of these cars are mechanically the best cars I have ever owned with the least problems ever. Even my 2011 Outback already has a busted power steering pump. The AWS works like factory new in both cars. The only other issue I have is with the 95, it has blown speakers.

Nobody else offered a 6 speed trans, adjustable suspension, twin turbos, all wheel steering, active aero, and a kick ass combat wing.... cars today should being saying thank you to this predecessor!

I own a 1995 3000GT VR4. Bought it in 1999 used. Still daily drive it today. All original mint condition. Every feature works on the car like it was new, yes even the AWS. The car has never left me stranded and I have taken it on several 2,000 mile long road trips and still drive it cross country today. The worst problem I have ever had was a flat tire on the road. Because these cars shred tires when they go flat. And you can end up with dented rims. My engine has 189,000 original miles on it. I always garage it and never drive it in the winter on snow or ice. Of all the 25 cars I have owned in my entire life, this 95 VR4 is the single most reliable car I have ever owned. I can not believe how the electric windows auto door locks, ASW, AWD, Active aero, auto climate control all still work like new. I have driven this car for 21 years and I have no reason to stop driving it. Love it that much! Get awesome comments from people when they see it on the road. Most people I meet have no idea what kind of car it is, many think it is a Ferrari. Then they see the Mitsu logo and ask when was that made? I say 1995 and it is an antique. They say it sure does not look like an antique. If you have questions about long term ownership of these cars I am the guy to ask. They used to be expensive to maintain but by todays standards and prices they have become run of the mill affordable. But I will say if you are short of money and can not afford to maintain this car and drive it past its service dates it will set you back in a major way. It has an inference engine so when things like timing belts break they cause massive expenses in repairs. Best to replace those items on a regular schedule and you will have a trouble free vehicle for life. Do not cheap out on this car and it will take care of you.

I have a 91 VR4. only mods are Niche wheels,a 1.25" Tein spring drop, short shifter and LED headlights. AWS works, AWD is solid, Active exhaust works but it is hardly noticeable. My front aero doesn't work. I hit a bad pothole and the ECS on the front right broke, I will be upgrading to a GPS adjusted Tein setup when something actually stops functioning and I am forced to replace. I still love the car and drive it almost every day.

Also, plan on working on this car yourself, because most shops won't touch it. Great cars to drive and they sound amazing with headers and a good catback.

Mitsubishi made a large number of engines that had awful cylinder heads. I really hope they solved the problem when they made the Evo X, because that is what I will get eventually. Chrysler made a big mistake using certain Mitsubishi engines in the T&C van in the 1990s.

Currently own a 3000GT SL, its no slouch - throttle response is there and the ride is amazing. Mines got 188k miles on it, the only issue I had was I couldnt do the hubs myself, theyre builtin into the knuckle - had to have a machine shop do them but its was a very reasonable price. Keeping the art alive... yea thats a good quote. Its a beautiful car and people love looking at it - I get more compliments on this car then I have on my Firebird Formula, 95 Mustang GTS or Eclipse.

There is a huge after market support for these cars now. 3SX has almost every part you'll need to mod these cars. Big brake kits, Big turbos, stand alone ecu's, Coilovers from BC, and Tein (I prefer Tein since you can use an EDFC unit on them). Their is even a guy that's making full tubular subframes and control arms for the front and rear that you can buy. Even transmissions that are dogged boxed with sequential shifters. Plus you can build them to make some awesome power. Over a 1000hp+ if done right.

I've recently bought a 1992 VR-4 and while yes, constant maintenance and staring at that stupid red, mocking AERO light, oh it seems as if it's the brightest light on the dashboard. Constantly informing you that "its wonderful that you have active aero in a 27 year old car, now if only IT COULD WORK!" Even with those problems, every single time I open the throttle and I hear the turbos spool at about 3,000RPM, I know, it's gonna be a good day.

I loved my VR4. Handled very well, the tall gears made it kill easily with a set of modified 15g turbos. Tuning required a standalone (this was before the "Chrome" ECU) And even 18x10 wheels fit under the fenders with a 0 offset. After my 2nd engine blew due to poor oil circulation I called it quits. The engine bay made the car infuriating to own.

I have the 93 Dodge Stealth R/T TT AWD Model Misunderstood car that no one did ANY Maintenance too. Mine is at 200K and finally had major overhaul. 99% of them died mainly because of a dented oil pain causing pickup tube to starve motor of oil. My Turbos/Transmission/Rear End/Transfer Case/ Drive Shaft lasted 200K Miles. We rebuilt because they were too old. When I bought the car I knew it probably needed a motor. So was one of the first things to change out but did few years before then. Never stranded me. At Near 500HP with basic bolt on replacement parts. It was Nearly same price to get 15Gs Billets as it was to rebuild 9bs... Send your ECU/ and other computers to someone to get recapped. I've also never really had any serious electrical issues. except a fog light I screwed up on when i was a teenager. 12 Years+ Ownership. I penny pinched and rebuilt everything mechanically. But was solid most of the time. Just got ragged from Ancient parts.

I was the original owner of two early 3000GT's. My 1st was a 1991 SL, the first model year (in the US). I believe I was the first person in Atlanta, Ga to take delivery of one because about a month later out of the blue, Mitsubishi shipped me a beautiful lead crystal model replica of the car, which I still have, with a signed card congratulating me on my purchase. This was in the Summer of 1990. 2 years later, in the Fall of 1992, I traded the SL for a 1992 VR-4. That was the best car I ever owned. I drove the hell out of that thing, had it pretty heavily modified, took it to NUMEROUS track days at Road Atlanta, Roebling Road, Carolina Motorsports Park, Atlanta Motor Speedway, Sebring, Virginia Int'l Raceway, Talledega, you name it. I'd drive it to the track, hawk down most of the Porsches, BMWs, Mustangs, etc there - many of which were race-prepped trailer queens - drive it home, then drive it to work the next day. I never had any of the problems the guy mentions in this vid. I did all the maintenance on the regular, and it cranked up every time I turned the key. It was my daily driver as well as weekend warrior for about 15-20 years. Simply awesome car.

Oh yeah. The main car in Fast and Furious was supposed to be a 3000GT VR4 but they changed it at the last min due to Camera Issues so Supra can mount them better or something like that. I don't agree with the modding part. You just have to go on Forum and find the websites. Most of my crap is bolt on and already 500HP. I could went way more with intercooler that I'll make or install my own one day. But they have easy affordable bolt on kits for 700-800HP. Chromed ECU or Standalone is what you need and you can do whatever you want. And you get custom Intake manifold. Allows you to change the rear spark plugs. I haven't gotten one yet but def community out there to help. 500-650HP is as simple as 750++ Injectors, Dynamic Racing Turbos/19Ts, SAFC2 Apexi, Maintenance Timing Belt/Water Pump, check motor bearings, oil pan/pickup tube check, check transfer case, Maintenance and More maintenance. Fuel Pumps cost nothing for these cars and has easy access panel for it. $35-200. They have videos of people bolting on DR750 Dynamic Racing turbos and easily at 700HP.

I absolutely love these cars and never want to get rid of mine! There is a mounting problem with reliability issues, because these cars are getting pretty old now, but I am able to work on mine myself, so that's a bonus... The fastest example of these is into the 8s in the quarter mile drag racing and has about 1,250hp so they are very potent cars! All one needs to do to get good treatment from them is to treat them well in return!
