I composed this piece in March 2008 to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the founding of Kogotanourin High School, Miyagi Prefecture.
At its premiere, this piece was given the title of “Ryujorinshin” by the advising instructor and students. However, due to the difficulty of the Kanji characters, it was renamed to “Mayu no Yume” during its publication.
Based on the commission’s request that this piece should have a Japanese style as well as the idea that the school used to specialize in sericulture when it was founded, I composed this piece by invoking the theme of “dreams and hopes of a single cocoon for the future.” The subtitle of the piece is “Ryu no Mau Sora,” which is a remnant of the title proposed by the students at its premiere that creates an image of the cocoon soaring into the sky like a dragon.
With regard to performance aspects, please pay attention to the balance and setup of the acoustics since Japanese drums are used (if they are not, S.D. can be turned off). It is also possible to perform this piece with three Japanese drums with different pitches such as 3-Toms. I hope that you will be able to bring out the contrast between the power of brass instruments and the beautiful tone of woodwind instruments.
