As for Maynard staring at one person in the crowd...yes. Now imagine instead of a sea of people at a concert you were in a small dive bar and Maynard was staring a hole into you from 7 feet away. Ok. Got it? That's the live performance on KZitem titled "Tool Live Philadelphia 1992 Remastered (JC Dobbs) Full Concert" and you should definitely check it out. (The songs in that performance are as follows: Part of Me, Hush, Cold and Ugly, Sober, Sweat, Crawl Away, Swamp Song, Bottom, and Jerk Off)

Yeah, I can see that certain people might not get passed the initial image of a grown ass man sporting a pastel onesie, combat boots, and a major mohawk mullet, while simultaneously questioning his sanity & sobriety, but they’ll never get around to the awe & wonder of the art, the performance ~ the Performance Art ~ of an otherworldly singer & lyricist absolutely murdering his part to palpable perfection, along with the rest of his world class band mates, if I may add, (despite the less than stellar sound quality,) then no one who is a fan, here, can help them understand what the rest of us experienced.

Been waiting for a year to see this one…bout time! Can you imagine being that person in the last row of the crowd left of the stage and Maynard is staring a hole in your soul for most of the song??!😬🫠🤯 It’s too long to react to, but if you are ever in the mood watch the JC Dobbs live recording of Tool playing in front of what seems like 13 people in a bar. He does the same stare to some poor victim, except it lasts for like 6 songs in a row🫣…and it’s Tool at their rawest, and Maynard at his angriest! “Tool it up”, winner of the internets phrase of the day award…🏆🤣

I can't be promoted any higher than I am. Loved your thoughts on the video.Funny story, this was the first Tool song I had ever heard except it wasn't Tool singing. It was a very popular local cover band called Empty Head and I grew to love it so much that I had to go to the local cd store and buy the original artist named Tool. That cd buy changed my life as far as music goes. I am so glad that Empty Head did it justice otherwise I may have never bought that cd. Also there was no internet then so you had to buy it. Anyways, I love Tool more than anything and believe that are the greatest band that has been or will ever be. Tool forever!!!!! BTW, love you Lauren! Another great vid!!

In 2002, I saw Tool in Boulder, Colorado. I was the fortunate one who had Maynard's gaze the whole concert. He focused on me, and I focused on him. As the mosh pit zoomed behind me, I stood and sang my heart out to every song with him. I fed off of his emotions, and I like to think he fed off of mine. Though, that is probably hubris. Thoughtful reaction, as always. I've heard Maynard has some stage fright issues, and that is why he focuses on one person. Anyway, I'm looking forward to more of your thoughtful Tool reactions. Please, keep them coming. ❤️

I completely agree with you that people should listen to the studio version of this before the live, and I generally feel that way about all music. It drives me nuts when people recommend the MTV unplugged version of Alice in Chains songs before recommending the studio versions... I know why fans recommend it, because they already have a connection to the studio versions, so when AIC did the unplugged set, with their whole back story of Layne's addiction, it was very powerful, but the reality is, the live stuff misses a lot of nuances that the studio versions have, and people coming fresh to these bands don't get the full impact of the songs when they hear the live versions first, they get the impact of the performance. I hope people stop recommending live version of songs to beginners, and also stop recommending The Pot as the first Tool Song to listen to! I mean I like it, but there are so many other quintessential Tool songs I'd recommend before that one... How The Pot became THE first song to recommend is beyond me.

Honestly this was remastered in 2014 from a 1993 video I'd say that the audio is pretty good. But the main focus should be on Maynard's preference. I discovered this band Jinger from watching Tool reactions. Jinjer is a Ukrainian metalcore band that shares a lot of similarities with Tool. I they like to play around with their time signatures a lot and they fuse a bunch of different genres of music in to their music. Also they are fronted by an amazing vocalist Tatiana Shmailuk. The general introduction to Jinger is Pisces the live session but I think you might like Wallflower off their latest album Wallflowers.

FYI for those who do not know Maynard actually has really bad stage fright, especially during the early 90s. He stares off to get absorbed into the music. Sometimes people say he is disconnected to the audience but it make it more real and raw. He started to stand in the back ground later on and about 25% was due to his fear. He has said many times at Banquets he’s been to that he still has stage for even in his 50s.

Agreed about people listening to live versions first. The first time you hear a song should be the studio version. The ONE and ONLY time this fact isn't true is for the song "God Hates a Coward" by Tomahawk, because, while the song is cool and all, the live, professionally shot performance with Patton wearing the respirator mask is perfection and actually sounds better than the recording. End.
