The real challenge for me, and I think most people, is branding yourself. As a designer I can brand other people no problem, but as soon as it’s for me.... I just hit a wall. Every time. Overcoming self doubt about this is also a key stumbling block. That said, this was a good reminder to really kick myself up the arse and sort this out. Thanks man.,

I remember you talking about Instagram being "the new portfolio" like 3-4 years ago in a video, and ever since then I started upping my game there. But I started realising otherwise like a year ago - more clients want a website where they can choose what category of work they want to see. It's overall more professional... and the quality doesn't get compressed. But your tip overall helped me be more picky with what I post on instagram, witch I also think is important!

As pro sports photog for over 10 years running, with 100+ teams I’ve never set up a website to showcase a portfolio or video work I’ve completed.. since starting a YT channel, this is SOOOO TRUE because a possible client may seek out our channel, and that would not entirely reflect the capacity of work that we can execute.

"people dont have time for that" such a true statement, people will watch a tutorial but when it comes to certain things they are looking for then they want the info NOW and not in 20 minutes. The biggest thing is learning your audience and what they are looking for. This is my 4th and newest channel and I have learnt this the hard way. I do product reviews and people shopping want the info quickly. I can make a 10 minute video and it gets 50% viewed or I can make a 3 minute video that gets watched almost 100%. Was the same for my cooking channel, my gaming channel etc.

Why don’t you do a regular video series where you review and critique viewer’s submitted portfolio. Because you can tell someone to make a portfolio. But it doesnt do much good if you don’t showcase what to do and what not to do. As well as to showcase how portfolios can look completely different from one another yet still get the same message across.

True but to be fair.. a good website is not always a 'template' website... it needs to tell your story and fit you as a person or brand. Otherwise you are the same as anyone else... Socials are good for community building.. which can lead to your website... but because it's this end station, it's important that you present yourself the best you can.. and templates are not always the way to go then... this might not fit everyone or every brand...

THANK YOU for this. There are legitimate reasons why some people may refuse to access Instagram (aka Facebook). Don’t try to force your potential clients into your world; give them a publicly accessible website. No animosity intended, but there are businesses I don’t work with because the only way to learn about them is through “social media” sites I do not use. Also, if you work for local government/schools/services; make sure you aren’t making this same mistake. Because you will be blocking citizens/parents from participating if you communicate only via closed “social media” systems.

Chris Do said that if you make your Instagram your portfolio, you may become "too precious" with what you can or can't post. He said social media should be just that: social. Have a conversation.
