When examining the intersections of any social identity, there are bound to be tough discussions. In the helping professions though, we must use these challenging moments to examine further, self-reflect, and learn from others. Religious spirituality and queer identity are two topics where people hold strong beliefs, and therefore they should be put in conversation with each other more often.
Join the Social Work Queer Alliance (SWQA) as they take a closer look with their virtual panel event, “Navigating the Intersections of Religion and Queer Identity in Human Practice”. The Social Work Queer Alliance has assembled a diverse panel of activists and scholars to elaborate on how spirituality and queer identity present and contradict each other in human-centered practice. Panelists include:
• Daniel Horrigan: Mental Health Coordinator at The Hannan Center and co-host of the Gay With a Bible podcast
• Rachael Phillips: Clinical Social Worker and co-host of the Gay With a Bible podcast
• Pastor Roland Stringfellow: Senior Pastor of Metropolitan Community Church Detroit
• Professor Mark Satta: Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Wayne State University
• Rand Jitan: Muslim Community Activist
Through guided dialogue, our panelists will tackle hard questions about where religion and queerness meet, and discuss what implications those intersections have for social work and other helping professions. Prepare for a robust conversation from a wide range of perspectives and experiences. The event is open to all Wayne State Students, Faculty, Staff, and Community Members.
“Navigating the Intersections of Religion and Queer Identity in Human Practice”.
