racism is bit like working in retail, it only takes one person to ruin to your day. Having experienced racism, if your not careful it can make you very bitter. Its a terrible thing to experience, not so much the incident but the danger in which it can sour your thoughts moving forward. Then it creates a self defeatist attitude and then each proceeding time you experience racism it cements your thoughts on the issue.
@okyouknowwhatever
8 ай бұрын
@@fezzabluenose White players can experience the same thing. But hey, keep living in a fantasy world if it makes you feel better. But Kaka, for instance, was viewed as a lesser talent and as a lesser player by a lot of people in Brazil just because he was white. Then he came along anyways and curb-stomped people, because hey talent is talent. Black football players aren't disadvantaged in any way in a country like England, probably the opposite honestly since they're often very big, agile, fast and athletic. I also remember some public persona many years ago, in reference to Bayern Munich player Samuel Kuffour, saying black people are naturally better football players than white people, and no one batted an eye. Imagine if someone said the opposite, that white are better natural football players than black people, people like you would have gone clinically mad.

Other mangers have had worse records and been given time and chances. Chris Hutton deserved a top job more than solskjer and Lampard. Chris got sacked from Brighton even with limited funds and squad. White managers get more opportunities. Lampard can keep failing same as Gerrard and still get a job. Barnes made a good point about British managers being perceived in a certain way which is true. If David Howie was European or South American he would get more credit. So in away white British managers have to deal with a similar perception difference Is its slightly easier for a white British manager than a black manager. The reason the numbers are low for black managers applying for the position is they know its an almost impossible task so they don't bother. we all know football Is a brutal world when you ant winning and when your a manager why would you put yourself through the stress.

John Barnes is a legend and we need way more people like him to create the change that's needed. I think Deion Sanders (American NFL/MLB player turned coach, has always been unapologetically black in how he carries himself and his approach to sports, broadcasting and now coaching. He's got an incredible work ethic but he's trying to change the narrative around hiring black coaches from trying to get black people trying to fit in and ignoring their culture by showing people that black people being themselves bringing their own culture and experiences to the table can be successful and should get serious opportunities because he's out to prove that it works.) Ultimately that's where the change needs to come from and be made, and almost none of those trails have been blazed. There's room at the table for everyone once we start to accept that different people doing the same job can achieve great things with wildly different approaches, personalities and experiences. The second you ask people not to be themselves and approach them from a place in life they have no experience with, they'll fail no matter how many things you put in the system.

I could make a similar argument about Irish players not getting offers from bigger clubs over the years : Shay Given, Richard Dunne, Seamus Coleman, Wes Hoolahan, Robbie Keane got 6 months at Liverpool because of "tactical ineptness"? Rubbish! Benitez signed 2 right backs upon taking the job because he assumed Steve Finnan was substandard and yet he went on to be a mainstay in champ lge winning side that year. Dunne was sold by City after the takeover and was told by sporting director "his name didnt roll off the tongue in Beijing" and was replaced by Joelen Lescott - comical! Arsenal had a poor keeper in Almunia for years when Given was available... And how no one ever took a punt on Coleman is beyond me. Granted we're rubbish now but in those times - certain players deserved better.

I think this is the best I’ve ever heard John Barnes speak. Usually he doesn’t explain himself the best and allows room to be misunderstood/misquoted. I think the confrontational tone sharpened his points and brought the best out of him here. Simon thinks he’s an authority on everything, and on a small % of those things he is, but racism and the socio-political environment around it is definitely not one of those things. He just comes across as a close-minded Thatcherite Capitalist when talking about those kinds of social topics.

The black manager debate is utterly ridiculous, if a chairman thinks that man can get results he will employ them , look at george Graham, rafa and steve bruce hired by the arch rivals of their previous employers because they thought they could do the job ,football is a massive buisness and people think a chairman wouldnt employ a manager because he is black but is the right man for the job is laughable

Too sharp... Well done to John... Incidentally he is the missing elephant in the room for English football today... England lack that technical know-how in midfield which is why they can't get over the line in big games in spite of their promising players. @@kevinb9830 that is the dominant feeling of his performances for England. Even he states that quite frequently. However, he does state that the football he played would in argument be suited to the football currently played by the national team today. My earlier point was just to allude to the missing link in the current English national team is players who show those attributes in terms of keeping the ball and passing it around. Incidentally we can say that of Paul Scholes too. Apparently his performances for England are questionable but ironically such attributes would be welcomed in the current national set-up, arguably.

I'm a Liverpool fan, and I watched a lot of John Barnes. I have to say that when he moved to play in midfield I thought he was 'at it' at times. He got much bigger and less enthusiastic. Like Souness said, he was on a huge contract and it was difficult to see what we were getting as a return. A brilliant individual player, no doubt about that. I listened to this as far as the 24th minute. I've always liked and respected John Barnes for his views. But this video has been a bit of a shock to me. Look at the NBA, there are lots of successful black coaches. I follow the Boston Celtics and, at the moment, they have a first-class black coach. John asked Simon how things will change and Simon's reply was by having a different attitude (in relation to something Jermaine Defoe said). In my humble opinion, anyone can be successful if they believe in themselves and work toward that goal and are humble and willing to learn, regardless of race, gender, or background. Forget about race. If you know you are as good as a Eddie Howe go for it, persevere, and ditch the excuses. If you don't make it, learn from your mistakes and move on. If you blame race for your failings you are openly saying that you aren't good enough because of your race. It's utter nonsense. Come on, John. Really?
