We like using "Sock Shoes" as camp shoes on the Appalachian Trail. They are very packable and lighter than most sandals or Crocs. Their rubber soles are very grippy and keep our feet protected and dry when walking around camp. We also hike in them some on the AT. All are machine washable.
We've tried 3 different types and share out thoughts below and in this video.
Baresocks 2.0 are the lightest, thinnest, and least expensive of the 3, weighing 3.3 ounces for one (5XL) with a 2 mm sole. A pair cost us $28. They feel like a running sock with a thin rubber sole. The sock material is quick drying CoolMax fabric. They have the most ground feel and you can add an insole or thicker sock for more protection.
Skinners 2.0 are a little heavier and thicker and have a removeable 2 mm insole. One in XL weighs 4.2 oz without insole, 4.7 oz with insole, and has a 3 mm rubber sole. At $74.99, Skinners are the most expensive of the 3. The sock material feels similar to the Baresocks. The rubber feels like it was sprayed on vs being one solid piece.
Goat Grips are they thickest of the 3 with a 3 mm sole and size XL weighs 7.1 oz for 1. They have a very wide toe box and the rubber feels more like one piece rather than sprayed on. A pair costs $44.95 but they seem to regularly offer discount codes. They also provided us with a 20% off code to share "GOAT20"
Summary: Baresocks are the lightest and thinnest, Goat Grip are probably the most durable and offer the best protection, and Skinners are a good in-between option.
Conclusion: For price, weight, and packability, we prefer the Baresocks. While Skinners are pretty similar in weight and fabric thickness to the Baresocks, their price tag causes us to lean towards the Baresocks. Baresocks have the thinnest rubber sole so you feel the ground the most but you can always add a thin insole or thicker sock. The Goat Grips seem to be the most durable but they weigh twice as much and the thicker fabric takes the longest to dry. We like to wear these sock shoes with wool socks. If we're using them to hike in cold wet weather, we'll use them over a wool sock and waterproof sock.
