In 1968, with the success of LAUGH-IN, producer George Schlatter created SOUL, a special designed around the same variety show model but targeted toward a Black audience. Singer and actor Lou Rawls hosted with a cast of up-and-coming and established comedians and performers, including Nipsey Russell, Redd Foxx, Slappy White, Hines Hines and Dad, George Kirby, Chelsea Brown, Martha Reeves, and many more. The comedy show dealt with hot topics in the news of the day, from segregation and racism to politics. The year was a tumultuous one in the U.S. with the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy and the eventual election of Richard Nixon. #reddfoxx #sketchcomedy #classictv
