6'4'', fast, strong, supreme technique, one of the 15 greatest midfielders ever, named after a famous philosopher, a graduaded doctor and a dude who fought for democracy on and off the field at times of dictatorship... total baddass. Renato Gaucho didn't succeed at forst in Italy while Amoroso and Amarildo did... anyone that has followed those 3 in the 15 years of their career know Renato is by far the best of the bunch, but I guess coz he didn't adapt that well in Rome and at those times players still didn't feel the need to insist if things didn't go well their first season in europe they didn't need to stay there to I don't know prove their worth or something, they simply came back to the brazilian domestic level , that were in terms of talent overall as good and better than any other place

Before his death The Doctor was very critical over the declining state of the Brazilian NT which to him had lost its beauty, its magic, its Jogo Bonito. Nobody listened, saying that the rigid, European way was the way to go. Too bad he didn't get to see his countrymen fall to Germany at home in the 2014 World Cup. They never made players like this. These players made themselves. Nowadays, they get scouted early and "educated" into the correct way to play. For most people (in all aspects of life), education kills creativity. You just end up with a bunch of people believing what they are told and not being able to think outside those boundaries. And the 70s were pretty good for football geniuses as well.

Luis Lizard indeed a great period. Mattheus, Baggio, Stoichkov, Gullit, Romario, Rijkaard, Rummenige.....what a overload of talent those days. And don’t forget goalkeepers like Dassayev, Schumacher, Pfaff, Van Breukelen or Schmeichel.

Football players and popular athletes have the biggest influence on public , Socrates used it for Corinthians Democracy, sadly nowadays players are hollow, they don’t stand with any cause, they don’t wake people about real problems, all what matters for them is their salaries, sponsoring and careers, even in interviews they talk only basic things and try to be neutral, you feel they dont have a personality. RIP Socrates, i love this man for his attitude and ideology more than Football.

And Socrates was just my hero.

I love him to death. While watching him play in 1982 and 1986, I found myself enjoying a fairy dancing, an experience I've never had since. When Brazil lost, I was depressed for a month. I truly hope this guy can win the World Cup - the best midfield player ever. Only Zidane comes close to him.
