As of September 2020, I can no longer find any Sodastream cartridges in Central California. I was aware that you can recharge a Sodastream cartridge using dry ice, but couldn't be bothered.
Now I actually need to do it.
Fortunately it is stupidly easy.
While there are lots of tutorials which show how to do this, I thought I'd create one that is streamlined, showing just the essentials. It took me less than ten minutes, start to finish, to recharge my first canister. My next one will take closer to five minutes.
The dry ice cost $2.19/pound at Safeway. You need one pound per canister (you actually add 14.5 oz), plus an extra pound to cover the waste and sublimation that happens before the dry ice is in the canister. So if you have four canisters, get 5-6 pounds, depending on how long it takes to drive home. I put the dry ice in a small cooler, as you see in the video. There was still a little bit left the next morning, twelve hours later, so if you start your work within an hour of buying the dry ice, you should still have plenty left.
