You've convinced me to buy that Onn 5.1.2 Atmos soundbar, seen this as I was searching for a universal remote decided to look it up vs the Logitech. Let's say you're convincing me to get the sofabaton as well 😂 seems to do all I need, I don't need it to create scenes or whatever, just 1 remote to control tv, soundbar and 4k Blu Ray player. Balling home theater/entertainment living room on a budget 😂

The Sofabaton U1 is easy to set up but it just doesn't do as much as my Harmony 880. My Yamaha A/V remote has 68 buttons and the Sofabaton only has 32, and a few of those are not available. With the Harmony I can create multi-page screens of soft buttons, but the Sofabaton doesn't have that capability. I've got 8 Activities programmed into my Harmony, the Sofabaton only has 4 macro buttons. On the Harmony, I can create an activity such as Watch TV, where one button turns on the TV, DirecTV box, and A/V receiver, sets each to the right HDMI inputs/outputs, and the channel buttons operate the DirecTV box while the volume buttons operate the receiver. Then there's a separate button to turn off the 3 devices. With the U1, I'll have to use a macro button to turn the devices on, figure out where I can reprogram buttons to select HDMI1 ... HDMI6, I'll have to scroll to different devices for volume/channel, and toggle to each device to turn them off.

I have one question. You spoke about cloning the remotes to work on the baton or in other words catching the codes but what if you no longer have a working remote and is seeking a replacement. I remember having a Logitech harmony 1 and the only thing a needed to clone was one or two special features for my Kenwood receiver. Everything else was just a go after set up and now I don't know where my previous remotes are so how would that work for me?

Can you do activities with the sofa baton? That’s the main reason I like the harmony remote. I’ve actually actually never had any issues programming buttons on my harmony but I’ve only used the IR versions. You could use and IR extender with the sofa baton to transmit commands into your closet. I have use both the wired and wireless types and have had success with both. Of course, the wireless versions do cost quite a bit more so that would add to the overall cost of the sofa baton.

The sofabaton really only wants to be a remote. The screen isn't touch or anything and it cant do anything your original remote can't. I'm not even sure that you can setup multiple things to come on at the same time. You have to turn on or off everything one at a time

@@Kpaceguy YOu can by programming a macro. I just set this up for my dad and programmed the Power button to power on the TV, Receiver, and cable box all on one press. YOu can't really do Activities per say, but you can get creative with it. EX: I told my dad to always leave it on the Cable box setting on the screen, then I re-mapped the keys to volume controls the receiver, input switches inputs on the tv, Blue button puts receiver in BT mode, and 2 other color coded keys control volume on tv in case doesn't want to use receiver. Every other button is for controlling the cable box. This way he has complete control of how he watches TV without having to be switching what device to control. Very good review by the way.

Overall, I thought you did a great job on this review. Thank you. I did, however, find some things I'd like to comment on. First, when you compared the Sofabaton U1 to the Harmony "Ultimate" you gave your thoughts about the screen. However, while I agree the Harmony screen is FAR better (Who thinks advertising a "OLED Screen" expects a tiny two line screen stuffed into the top of their remote?) you never showed in any "side-by-side" comparison of the screens; and I could watch it again but I believe you didn't even have the Harmony screen turned ON. It was a great review, but things like that do help readers in making a ""purchase decision." (And here I never studied for my MBA yet I SOUND like one. Yuck... ;) .) As far as ease-of-use, I agree too that the Sofabaton appears better. I've had various Harmony remotes since they first came out. And I've read reviews that say "But, a downside is this remote is a bit complicated to set up." That surprised me (They should've tried setting up the "Core" remote. Wozniak (Yes, of "Apple fame") created it and I bought two. To this day I say it's the most "configurable" remote ever created. One example is you could create Macros that called Macros that called yet more Macros. Sounds dandy, but all I can say is I'm glad I was a Software development engineer, because even given THAT I had to keep a notebook to remember what I had programmed each key and what that key did with other keys. So I found Harmony to be, quite simply AMAZING as to how you set it up. Truly ground-breaking but it seems the Sofabaton improved on THAT; no small feat. I especially like that it allows you to reprogram ALL the keys. Many "Learning remotes" will do something like giving you just FOUR keys that are "teachable." Blah. But, since I'm not a terrific "fan" of cellphones in general (Primarily because they're expensive and I'm "old school; I don't have the "need" to be on-call 24/7 or refer to my grocery list to remember I need to buy eggs) using a cellphone to set it up does work well. (And it's a developers DELIGHT. The UI is all but MADE for you. If my gramma was still around I wouldn't be terribly surprised if she wrote her own "app." ) And if I remember, you dinged it for not having a rechargeable battery. I'm kinda neutral on that and given the choice between replacing AA cells once or twice a year vs making sure you plug something into a charger, I'd go for the AAs. But it may be too early, and that makes me wonder just how long those AAs last. Also, you dinged it for making you point the remote at the device you want to use. Fair enough, but as you pointed out the Harmony has a "Hub" that let's you control devices even inside of a cabinet. I know, I have a few with my Harmony's. But that's just a "repeater" and you can buy universal repeaters almost anywhere. All the Harmony does is provide one for you, and we wind up paying a premium for that. And last, and this is clearly my opinion, Logitech comes out with products -- such as the "Ultimate" you compared -- that are sleek and sexy and all-around cool, with some really innovative designs. I know, I've been buying Logitech products for a very long time -- I think Reagan was just getting into office when I bough my first Logitech product. But, and I'm not alone here, the very real problem is that, while Logitech makes those cool products, too often they lose their "coolness" because Logitech does one thing VERY well, they spend all their development money on creating new and wonderful new products, along with solid advertising, but when it comes to longevity, they seem perfectly content in cutting corners. I've had the throw away almost as many Logitech products I bought because they either "Just Broke," or Logitech decided supporting "old" products wasn't in their grand plan. For instance, I have purchased a LOT of their wireless keyboards and mice. And they all died, or (and THIS ticks me off) they "upgraded" their dongles and/or SW that no longer work with older products. (I think they're following Apple's lead on that, and they took it steps FURTHER.) They came out with a new "Universal dongle." No. They came out with a new dongle that supports their new products, and not the older ones. And they simply never TELL you that, it's hit and miss. And they have the audacity to write their "new and improved" SW to detect that you're using TWO dongles when just one is all that's needed. But that's not true and if I mix an old product up with a new one, I have to fumble around to get them both to work and I now realize that's because we DO need two separate dongles, one for old, one for new. And that ain't "universal." Of course, you can always "upgrade" that old, say, keyboard or in this case the old remote for just $299.99. I've bought 4K TV's for that. So consider Ultimate's ability to control your AV system behind a door with the Harmony; a repeater/extender that controls eight or twelve devices in three different rooms costs about $25 bucks. To say "The Sofabaton U1 can't control devices in a cabinet" isn't so, it can, and you can get more, for less with the Sofabaton. But in their defense I haven't had such problems with the Harmony line, outside of them just dying. And I've had to replace three or four -- maybe more -- remotes because the screen went dead, or a button or two stopped working, or the thing just died and does nothing. So this lengthy "tome" is just to say that Q&A at Logitech isn't world-class in my OPINION. And I don't think people think about that when buying those cool new things. (Heck, I was looking for some new earbuds just recently and I caught that a good number of reviews praised all the new features, ease of use, so forth, but some actually never commented on what the buds SOUNDED like. Maybe it's "just me," but isn't that they REASON you're buying HEADPHONES? But from all the reviews I've read, it seems that this, along with the Inteset 4-in-1 INT422 which costs 1/2 the price (Even as low as $21 if you shop around) are what I'm looking for. I currently have the Harmony Companion and the Harmony 665 but frankly, I'm tired of paying what Logitech demands. They might be a tad "better" but Logitech also likes to keep their customers locked in and doesn't offer features that might affect their "bottom line." C'mon, they have an "Ultimate" and they have another one now, the "Elite" that's $300 and "better?" I guess I need to check the definition of "Ultimate," I may have mistaken what that word means. (Granted, the price did drop since release.) I had the Harmony One which, to this day is in high demand -- Some are going for $700 and even $900 bucks. But I say "had." One day, for no reason I can find it just stopped working. I forget what I paid for it but I'm pretty sure it sit's strongly in the "Ya gotta be KIDDIN'!" league. But like I said, this is a Logitech product so I wasn't very surprised. And last, the reviews on Amazon are quite mixed. Some people are going "ga-ga" and other's can't say enough bad things about it. And from that I do see some pretty critical problems, the near-useless OLED screen isn't the worst of the listed problems. So, while it IS limited, overall people seem to really be liking the Inteset. Granted, it doesn't have some features I'd like, but for $25 bucks it'd make for a pretty good 2nd-remote. And as for this one, I think I'll wait for their "Ultimate" to come out.

so in other words, you may not care about the bells and whistles but "does it do what a remote is supposed to do" ? NO you cant control all of your smart home stuff with it but you can control your stuff that it's meant to control and you're not gonna spend upwards of 300 bucks for it. speaking of which, that price point alone is why you shouldnt expect much from it but I understand why the comparison to the Harmony remote was done. Per Sofabaton, it's a cheaper version of the Harmony that does what it supposed to do and you can control most things except the ROKU STREAMING STICK or AMAZON FIRE CUBE

Now that Logitech is no longer making remotes, I am looking for a replacement for the Harmony 665 ($59). The main feature I need is Activities (1 button). My first Activity is "Watch TV", which turns on the TV, Receiver and Set-top Box along with all necessary HDMI Inputs. The second Activity is "Kodi", which turns on my Intel NUC running Libreelec, my Yamaha Receiver, and my Sony TV. The correct HDMI Inputs are also automatically selected. I can toggle back and forth between Activities with 1 button and turn on either Activity with only 1 button. I have watched many YT videos about the Sofabaton U1 but none of them cover Activities with Macros. Luckily, I was able to buy a brand new spare Harmony 665 from Best Buy before their stock started to disappear.

Not a fair comparison in my opinion. Its really like comparing a LG 4k Oled to a Sharp 720p LED. Both show the same picture but are not the same at all. Ya you save a bundle going with the Sharp but you get what you pay for. If you like me you find a used one for half the price. I have bought several harmony remotes/hubs (including the same harmony ultimate home) for $50 or less and they work perfectly fine. The setup for me is actually easier but yes there is a bit of learning curve. Teaching the remote each and every command like you had to do on the Sofabaton is archaic and so 1990's. Furthermore all hamrony hub based remotes can control bluetooth devices and are not limited to just 1. There are also many other features like voice control with google home/alexa, and other smart home controls all of which work with wifi or bluetooth. Not to mention you can control everything in your system remotely via the harmony app. So if you misplace the remote or the battery needs charging you have a nice alternative. To me $50 for the Sofabaton is fine as long as all you want to do is manually switch from device to device. But most OEM TV remotes can do the same thing quite well for basic functions.

@@Kpaceguy the remote you compared the sofabaton to is a harmony ultimate home. Not the harmony elite as mentioned in your video. The Harmony ultimate home is the same as a harmony touch and harmony hub combined. Those together as a package or separately don't cost $300. As a package they can be purchased for under $200. The harmony elite retails for up to $300 but it too can be found for much less if you search. Like I said you can find the harmony ultimate for under $100 quite easily if you don't mind previously enjoyed. I don't use my remote to control lights or thermostat much either but its there if I want it. But I do use google home to turn on and off activities, mute the tv etc. None of which an ir only remote can do. Also if you want to hide all of your equipment in a cabinet or closed the an ir only remote like t he sofabaton won't work . All I am saying is they are not the same and should not be compared. Not saying the sofabaton is bad just you are getting what you are paying for. You should be comparing it ot the Harmony 650 or 665. I personally prefer to buy more feature rich remotes like harmony's used and get a more functional remote for a much lower cost. So my Harmony Ultimate is worth every penny of the $50 I paid for it. Even at $100 its a better buy to me than an ir only learning remote. I have had ir learning remotes that do the exact same thing the sofabaton does and don't need an app to teach commands.
