Interesting that you added depth to collision objects rather than extra geometry. I'll try that. It seems that having higher geometry in the soft body objects is far more key than adding it to the collision objects, (which is kept ridiculously simple). Very handy.

I found a new kind of trouble! Came back to this tutorial after a couple months ago just to review things, play with settings. Instead of a plane to bounce on, I made a cube, and scaled the Z axis to small, something like 0.01 or so. The falling object did not bounce, but simply slumped down into a flat puddle. I cranked up the softbody Bending, and toyed with the Collision's Inner and Outer Thickness settings for the slab. It wasn't until I moved the bottom face of the slab way down, more like the original cube, that it worked. Softbody objects are affected by both the first surface and the next surface beyond of the collision object, the those surfaces are too close together. Adjusting the Inner and Outer Thicknesses may fix it, but better to just not have a surface close beyond the first-strike surface of any collision object.

A really weird thing I just found in Blender 3.3 and have no idea on was that - if you put the 1st soft body object above the 2nd one, the 1st SBO will always bounce on the initial position of the 2nd SBO even if the 2nd object already drops down - and this abnormal collision only happens between soft bodies. I noticed that - unlike rigidbody - the pivot of soft body object is always still and never follow the physical movement during the simulation, but is the soft body really supposed to work in that way or did I just set something wrong?

I am getting some major lag during the rubber duck portion of it. I used the duck I modeled on the later tutorial. Why do you think it is taking so long to run through an animation? I applied all of the modifiers and made sure that I didn't have repeated vectors. What do you think I did wrong? (Plus, I have an RTX 4070.) But, I also pulled the duck from an asset library. Does that play a factor?
@RyanKingArt
Жыл бұрын
hmm, the more geometry the model has, the slower the simulation will be. So if you applied a sub-surf modifier, it will be more laggy. I don't think using it from an asset library would effect the simulation baking speed at all.

But, I tried to work out of the original file I modeled, and I got the same issue. But, when I resaved the same file in another folder, it was flowing like whiskey. I wonder what Mr. King is using. I'm using an RTX 3060, 16GB RAM and doing well with that. I'd like something newer and faster, but I'm cheap and the 3060 is doing fine for everyday use. If I had to render a long animation, longer than a minute, at 4K I'd probably look for a pay-for render service online.

I had weird things happen when playing with softbody. A bad idea is to model the thing in detail, use Subdivision Surface, apply it, have a zillion mesh points and then things go haywire. My mesh was visible all nice and proper in frame one, then vanished for frame 2. Solution: low-poly modeling, like for a game asset. In Modifiers tab, be sure Softbody is applied first (top of stack) and have Subdivision, Bevel and other modifiers like those later (below).

@RyanKingArt When you apply the physics to the duck instead of bouncing they will phase through the object. Sometimes they will bounce but they heavily clip through the object. The duck hits the surface like a trampoline, sinking in then bouncing out.
