Great video and subscribed. I came to this video looking how to control soft rush. We have 3.5 acres and this year i am letting the paddock do its own thing. I just want to keep the soft rush in the wetter section be controlled.

From experience ive found using a strimmers and cutting the overgrowth into 8-10” lengths achieves the best mulch doesnt need to be raked

Great piece. Photography sublime. Interesting. I felt fatigued watching cut and remove. Best wishes.

Just came across you guys I live in Co Leitrim Rush is a major problem! I’ve never used any chemicals I have been cutting and clearing the rush. I have amazing number of spotted orchids come up since I started hundreds infact. The wild flowers are starting to appear year by year but ye old rush is a devil What are your thoughts

Hi Mike, I asked Julian if he could help with advice if you don't want to use any glyphosate. He sent me the following reply: "Not much to add to the film's message really - I'm awaiting a completely organic pioneer to tell us how they manage soft rush - our bottom fields now have quite extensive sharp-flowered rush regrowth, but minimal soft rush ( though I do still try to hand weed wipe/cut off the few that reappear each year). Our neighbour's sloping field is now say, 70% soft rush, from none about 15 years ago. I reckon the only option with cutting and removal is to do it at least twice a year and in time to prevent seed drop. Avoid any poaching, and maybe grazing off with something that'll eat the young rush leaves - our Tor ddu sheep will do it, but of course once you have enough stock/grazing pressure for them to start eating the rush, the wildflowers get largely taken out as well. And definitely no muck or slurry applied - which is, along with excessive compaction, the main cause of our neighbour's problems, I think." Hope that's helpful.

@@carmarthenshiremeadowsgrou5624 Thankyou so much for your reply I bought the land about 7 years ago. About 7 acres. Hadn’t been farmed for 30 plus years Did a major clearance of the rush and removed it. Since then orchids started appearing everywhere. I’ve been cutting in early spring as to allow the orchid to set seed from the year before. It’s a bit of catch 22 situation with the rush seeding too Heavy mowing has helped in other areas of the field.Ive been leaving patches where I see the orchids coming up. The mowing has also helped knocked back the rush. The few meadow plants there were have been increasing significantly. Despite the rush it is picture during the summer I signed up for your newsletter letter. Thanks agin for your reply Mike

I'm not a fan for herbicides . A good contol method is to introduce willow, alder and birch and create a silvopasture. It can be coppiced for firewood and regenerativly grazed and you'll have a rich habitat of diversity.
