I bought a SOG SEAL pup from Dick's Sporting Goods recently, it looks more like the elite than the regular pup. Its edge starts alot sooner like the elite even though it is labeled as the pup, any body see this?

I bought this recently with the new Kydex sheath. That sheath is much better than any of the old models. The TiNi blade coating was a waste of money since it doesn't last. The knife arrived dull as hell. It took an hour on my low grit Japanese water stones just to make a serviceable edge, then another hour making the edge properly sharp. I was really surprised. SOG usually delivers excellent edges out of the box. But now that I have put a proper edge on this knife, I can see the use of this knife. I prefer the large/small knife and a hatchet combination in the bush and this light, serviceable knife is an excellent small knife for the little tasks such as food, forage and game preparation. I am not sure whether I prefer it to my Becker BK17, though, which is almost as light and easily takes a razor sharp hone and has a better profile for a small woodsman's knife.

"Stand off capability" in a blade is not so much relevant until you cross a line where a knife is bordering on being a machete due to an absurd length. It more comes down to how cumbersome it is to carry on your kit (or for that matter your belt).

Not trying to be an ass or anything, Great review but your hole thing about SOGs blade being to light and all that for heavy duty work, I had my Seal pup Elite Model E37T out with me for a three week woods trip, I cut threw a lot and i mean a lot of logs for firewood etc. I also just last night made a hut like place out back, just for getting out of the house and relaxing, I still don't need to sharpen it to be honest... It might be small, might be light, but don't count this knife out so easily

Nutn that Syperco you strapped to your LBE doesn't look like it's in a very "reach-able place. the way the grip is oriented it looks like you would REALLY have to reach all the way across your body with your right-hand and if you were drawing reverse grip with your left-hand that also looks like it was put in a very "out of the way position" Just food for thought man. Love your videos been watching for years

I love my SEAL team elite 7" and on that one the scalloping goes all the way to the handle, but im posting this about the handle. I think that hard plastic handle on the pup and the Team Elite are lacking big time, Im a huge fan of SOG my favorite knife is the Daggert 2 But a wet SOG handle is not enough to be secure. the handle absolutely needs a topside guard or a more aggressive grooving especially on the back, also the handle is "prickly" but doesnt grab like rubber.

I don't like the new sheath. The older kydex one was a lot more versatile. The Benchmade Nimravus Cub only has about a 3.5" blade, which is smaller than the one the folder in my back pocket has. I'm not really even sure what the Nim Cub is supposed to be for. The Nimravus has a 4.5" blade, but is on the thin side. The Gerber Prodigy is closer to the Seal Pup Elite, cheaper, with a better (MOLLE compatible) sheath, and thicker blade. The Prodigy knives are made in Oregon.

Knife laws are different from jurisdiction to jurisdiction In my city the "legal" limit for blade length is 3"3/4, anything above that is considered a "Weapon" and subject to the CCW laws and any other carry laws that may apply to any other "Weapon" and prosecuted similarly. lesson to all, Know your local laws, if for no other reason than to know how to explain your choice, I'm in an "open carry" city so we can openly carry any legal "weapon" including the big blades hope that helps someone :)
@smolkafilip

It depends how you are going to use the knife. Steel is the same for both of them, but blade type is different. NW ranger has 0,9 cm longer blade, but seal pup elite is 0,9 mm thicker, which could make a big difference at durability and heavier duty tasks. NW ranger is full flat grind, which makes it much better at food processing, so if it would be your second knife to a bigger one, it could be better choice. But as a single knife, pup is better. Not to mention NWs leather sheath which sucks.

@driftworld86 He did say he'd like to see a better finger guard on top, continuing of the spine rasp all the way to the guard and that the handle didn't give super traction so maybe that's why. And Nutn definitely does prefer plain edge blades generally speaking. I think the only serrations he approves of are those done by some Kershaw blades, but for LBE or survival blades he def. likes plain edge, and has said so in a lot of videos.

So I just got the SOG Seal Pup, but it's different from yours, it's got the thumb notch on the back of the blade, the serration starts closer to the handle, it's a longer handle. It's pretty much the same as the Seal Pup Elite you're showing, without the notching stuff on the back, I'm not sure if it's the 2nd generation or w/e, but I think the made improvements to the original Seal Pup

@matthias66 i got it for tactical POU cause i can mount it ANYWHERE on my kit, the nylon sheath mine came with has a nice molle attachable feature, so it can go on the chest, side of the armor (kind of a high reach but it might work), web belt, 550 cord holes allow for mounting right next to the sidearm. totally versatile. however, i saw a guy EDC'ing a kabar short clip point who swears by it.

@DrJulien3 i think the tech bowie is more of a weapon than a tool, and far too nice of a knife to go beating around on. I picked up this pup for duty use, because of the molle sheath, weight (i carry too much bullshit as it is, but feel that a fixed blade is a must have), and the size. I'm not sure i'd take it on a camping trip, as i'd probably carry the spyderco millie, and if i needed a big chopping blade the cold steel trailmaster. I think the trailmaster is comparable in price to the sog.

I love my strider to death hahaha. I think it is a little bit bulk but i would not trade it for anything. it is well worth the $365 I paid for it new. Even if any thing goes wrong you can send it to strider and he will fix it "even if don on purpose" I was told. Also if any thing gets scratched up or you just want it to look like new, you can send it to the Strider Spa. It all around is a great knife. I am 15 years old and to have a knife like this it it AMAZING lol. Thank you

Okay, this may seem arrogant and idiotic, but think about it, how long has the world had criminals using weapons to murder and maim people? Since the dawn of man. Taking away knives, and guns, and whatever else makes no sense. Those laws won't make criminals say, "Oh, illegal, can't do it!" It just takes away your opportunity to defend yourself, or in this case, carry a tool.

The thing is that SOG create this kind of blade for Penetration purpose (Fighting/killing), and not so well design for Batoning (part of the purpose , but not the main purpose). They thought so well all angles over this Bowie blade. I own the SOG S10b Tech Bowie. And it is great. So now i look for a Serrated pup SOG knife, for carrying & everyday use. Great Video.

Ok. Now since with the SEAL Pup Redux, what is the real differences between the Elite and the original Pup. I own a standard Pup, but it looks like the Elite, and is AUS 8 just like the Elite. I ordered a Becker BK2 as a batoning/camping/survival knife, but if I were looking for a second carry that I could use (will be minimal batoning unless zombies take my Becker), what would you recommend? SOG Seal Pup Elite or the Gerber LMF ii Survival? If the SOG...serrated or non?

i hate how ppl compare the seal pup elite to the SRK, the cold steel is too big to compare to the smaller seal pup... yah no shit its gonna be better for chopping, it git anpother inch and a half of blade! a better comparison would be SRK/ seal team elite, or maybe sog forge/SRK
@TheBlackknight120

this knife fits my loadout perfectly. the gov tac was too big, the gerber mark II too bulky, the fixation bowie was just very impractically shaped/had a bad sheath. this will work, especially when placed on the vest or armor, as a sidearm makes carrying a fixed blade on the dominant side a tad awkward
@Canada263

I'm looking for a survival knife that is small to mid-range in size and money. I think for my use a large knife is not needed. Out of the SOG SEAL Pup Elite or the Cold Steel SRK which do you think is a better blade for : light batoning, making tinder and small jobs around a campsite.

The nylon sheath isn't really MOLLE compatible. The gaps between the strapping on the back aren't even as wide as the straps. Even not being able to attach the most top and bottom points, it still pulls at whatever you mount it on. Big fail. =/

Nutn, Maybe some time you could do another short (re-visited) video on your concept of mobility versus firepower as that issue relates to concealed carry. It has been very difficult for me to sell the idea (I know that is not my job. lol) that mobility is much more important than firepower to the civilian concealed carry people. It would be great if I could send a brief video of yours to these people. Maybe they would see the light. Your theory surely sheds light on the subject.
