I don't know if they are actually using AUS-8 Steel or using 440A and calling it AUS-8. This was my very first knife that got me into knife collecting as a hobby. I bought this guy nearly 21 years ago, like I said as my first blade before I knew anything about knives. And this knife despite being very beautiful was total garbage. First off 440A was a horrible choice for a steel, just about the worst steel you can choose for a blade besides 420J. If I was to gorge a knife out of Styrofoam by beating it down and compressing it, in the end 440A might out cut that Styrofoam blade but then again it might not, it would be a close competition and I'd have my money on the Styrofoam. Because they chose thep worse steel, that created all sort of issues in design of the blade. The blade behind the edge had to be kept relatively thick because if they didn't the shit 440A steel would most likely snap and break with any moderate choping, batoying or prying. Despite having a good heat treatment, at SOG it was simply a futile endeavor, this was proved later when I broke off the tip prying (large piece about an inch from the tip), with the knife useless at that point, I solely used it to baton fire logs. And few months after that broke the knife again in half that time from an impact to the spine trying to split the log. So I'm curious whether Sog actually switched steels and is using AUS-8 which is a much better stainless steel both in fine grain, thus resulting in a much cleaner steel allowing for sharp edge, and toughness. Yes I fear Sog simply borrowed the Japanese steel designation to advertise their cheap American counterpart 440A.

How does this knife do with rust prevention?

This knife is made of AUS-8 stainless steel. Had mine for about 5 years with mild usage, doesn't seem to have any rust on it. Plus it has a black coating(forgot what it's called) covering most of the blade protecting it from corrosion. Not the best in edge retention though.
