I bought this knife because SOG was discontinuing and clearing out the green handle, stonewashed blade model for a steal of a price and wasn't expecting too much out it. A couple of months later and it's my most carried knife. It's an extremely well built and solid folder, with a big, mean, razor sharp, properly heat treated S35VN blade and a crossbar lock action that shames all of my Benchmades. In particular, it "push button" flips way better than any of my other non liner/frame lock knives. It's a heavy duty, utilitarian, "tactical" folder and yet, it's also a fidget toy, with many effective blade deployment options. It's almost impossible to drop thanks to aggressive handle texturing, carries very well with that chonky ambi pocket clip and I love the pommel on the butt, which can be used to break stuff and also to pry. I like to have serrations on my carry knives (just in case) but this one cuts and slices so well, that it doesn't need them. It goes through seat belts and heavy rope like a hot knife through butter. Huge win for SOG! BTW, my detent was a bit tough at first but broke in to where reverse flicking is comfortable and fun, even in my weak hand.

I bought one a couple months ago and just as advertised it is an absolute beast and really well made. I’m a fan of big blade heavy duty folders and this piece was a great pickup. I’ve stayed away from SOG in recent years until I’d seen this and watched some quality reviews before picking it up. They did an excellent job with this piece. Highly recommended. Thank you for another great review! New subscriber!

I call mine SOGzilla. SOG made a hell of a comeback, I love the Pentagon and Kiku XRs as well. This is the shining star, and only US made beast of the bunch. Smallest box, but largest blade, and as a Seatown local, was proud to see that good old Seattle stamp on the box of that beast. Gets a lot of EDC love. I wish they'd kept with the recent cryo XHP tradition for the blade steel, but no qualms. If I were to nitpick, I'd also have hoped for DLC. Was nonetheless, love at first sight, and an instant favorite. It really does not feel heavy or cumbersome as one might guess

Just got my second seal xr. I've had to lube it to death to get it to even flip. I knew this was possibly more than just detent. At first it took all my strength to flick to flip open. Now at least I can live with it. And at least it's not open with the flipper. Mine was 218 bucks. Im pretty sad 😭 but I hope it loosens some each day. It's came a long way last few hours. I watched a video of a guy breaking this knife down. After seeing it I regret not getting the fixed blade. They don't seem strong enough to me when you look at the guts of not only this but any folder. I'm going to commit to only fixed blade from this point on. Maybe a sea snake. Thank you for your content. It's wonderful you do a awesome job.

Yes, a hinged tool, such as a folding knife is only as strong as it's hinge or pivot. No getting around it, unless you consider a "non-conventional" folder, such as a balisong. A fixed blade may be what you need. I've done quite a few reviews on small to large size fixed blades. Check them out if you have time... 👊🗡️👍

@@OGBladeReviews I most certainly will sir. After some recent digging it's looking like my knife was taken apart and reassembled between leaving the manufacturer and reaching me. When it's assembled wrong the outcome seems to be the exact issue I'm having. The black plastic cord that tied the blade onto the sog box was not even there. Tells me I wasn't the first to handle this knife.

S.O.G. has always had it's own version of the "Axis" or lock bar style locks going back to the "Arc" lock before the patent expired for Benchmade. I should know , I had a S.O.G. X- Ray Vision with the Arc lock back in 99' , one of the best EDC knives I've ever carried. The XR lock isn't the same as the Axis lock Benchmade's Patent expiring had nothing to do with the XR lock coming out. The S.O.G. Seal XR Flipper is my EDC knife & has been for a year now. Your scale is off my friend the Seal XR is 8.2oz. Also the detent breaks in to the point where I can "spydie flick" the blade open easier than my PM2. I have nothing but good thing's to say about this knife so far & I highly recommend it for anyone that's looking for a hard use EDC knife that's perfect for self defense. Great video thanks for the awesome content 👍

Thanks for your in-depth comments! Relative to the weight of this knife I pulled those specs from a website which was obviously inaccurate. Around 8.2 oz should be correct enough, based upon my new scale. I, too, still have a fair share of older SOG's in the collection going back as far as 1986, having been a dealer for them for a few years, back near the time when Spencer founded the company. Part of the collection was the SOG Trident fixed blade along with the original Tomcat lock back folder with kraton handles. I'm familiar with the ARC lock, as well. However, I would have to disagree on your point that the present XR lock is essentially different than the axis lock, or even Hogue's ABLE lock - all essentially locking the bar knives, and all very good! The only difference I couldn't validate just a moment ago might be the type of springs used to hold the lock bar in place on the XR, and wether SOG uses anything like the Omega springs that Benchmade uses. This is based upon a close examination of a Benchmade Griptilian as an example, alongside the SOG Seal XR. Very glad you're getting some good use out of the SOG Seal XR. That's proof that it can really hold up under daily use. Best of luck and have a great holiday season. 🗡️👍😁 Thanks for watching!

@@OGBladeReviews I'd like to say that the springs in the XR lock are different than the Omega springs Benchmade uses but I'm not completely sure. I do know that un like the "Able" & "Axis" lock the XR lock starts to push the blade open when you pull back on the tabs. That's different right? Lol I do agree that they are awesome locks , I'm a lefty so lock bar's locks are one of my favorites.

Awesome blade and great review dude!I am thinking that this is SOG's answer to Cold Steel's SRK folder.I do wish though that SOG could have shave off an ounce off this knife(made made the handle just slightly less in length) and perhaps could have made the blade length a quarter of an inch longer.Maybe that's just wishful thinking on my behalf!!

Mine arrived with an uneven edge. Had to convex it myself and now it'll shave a flys ass. I find the tip to be a little stumpy. Like if you stab with it it won't get enough penetration. Just my observation. Kind of with blade style was stretched out more like a recon 1 clip point.

Just about every factory edge needs some work. If they're not uneven they're too rough. Either way, customer sharpening is the way to go. 👍🗡️

@@Studat there's a first & second generation to these Seal XR Flipper's so I've been told. The first generation had the blades made here in the U.S.A. & the rest of the knife built over sea's. RUMOR HAS IT that the 1st gen had issue's with the liner's rusting & springs breaking in the XR locks. You could tell it's gen 1 by the skull 💀 on the blade. Gen 2 , with stainless liners & better springs in the XR lock were all made & assembled here in the U.S.A. , they all said Studies & Observation Group Seal XR CPM S35VN on one side & USA 🇺🇸 made with the flag on the other. I've been carrying this knife for a year now as my EDC & I love it so much ! I have nothing bad to say about it at all. 💯❤🔪‼️
