Hearing Sokolov playing Schumann like this remindes me of seeing a picture anew after that centuries of dust have been removed. Impeccable!

When I listen to Sokolov I feel like he is always serching for something new in music, timbre, tecnique. And I don't like always the result. But when he finds the right felling for me is simple the best pianist. This recording is more controlled then Horowitz one but not less musical and the sound quality remind me Michelangeli but with the energy of Richter or Gilels. perfect.

La más conmovedora interpretación escuchada en mi vida fue esta ayer en el Auditorio Alfredo Kraus.
Listen to the Jozef Hofmann, Radu Lupu, or (my favourite next to the Horrowitz recording) the Yuri Egorov recording of this piece...

+musizaful - I have; That's why I have an opinion on the matter...Maybe to clarify I should have put 'as well' at the end of my earlier message? My apologies for the omission in that case...Either way, (after listening to above/sokolov's recording; and for that matter not withstanding it's obvious quality) I wanted to share (for those interested) those recordings of this piece which (I believe) are (even) better...

Horowitz is definitely the top performance here, unrivalled.

Noise is when you start describing and arguing your musical tastes. Either you feel or not. You do need to write a dissertation.

How much of the richness of the sound is his playing and how much is the piano and the recording?

Don't think Michelangeli or Gilels ever played Kreisleriana, or atleast recorded it. Sokolov always played with as much energy as any pianist in this work, but you should say he channels the energy differently at times. Sokolov is a much more intellectual and subtle pianist than Horowitz ever was - but Horowitz was a much more spontaneous and at times more emotional player. The comparisons to make are the Cortot, live Pollini, and live Volodos along with Horowitz.

А что можно написать об этом великолепном исполнении? Что кто-то предпочитает Горовица, кто-то Лупу, а кто-то Корто или даже Кисина? От этих предпочтений исполнение Соколова не станет хуже.

There is much speculation about Schumann’s hand problem. For many years it was thought to be a mechanical device that was the cause. Modern researchers now think it was syphilis which can in some cases cause nerve damage to the hands.

an awkward ritardando misplaced here can disturb the romantic thrust of this piece , good work but yuri egorov wins hands down.
