Are they truly 100% solar powered or are they actually battery powered with solar supplementation/charging?

I'd like to know that too

@@andreashabeck1155 they look like the same boats as found during the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. Their regulations state that a battery of 1.5kWh is allowed. So a lot of power has to come from the solar panels, especially during the endurance race.

You would need a battery to get up speed at the very least. I imagine it would become more efficient when the boat lifts

It's probably just enough to push through the cloud covered sections and to keep the foil elevated

I don't believe these are solar powered. They are battery powered and the solar only contributes to the total input power.

I'm not sure, we will check that for you. I'm waiting for an answer from the manufacturer.

There are pedal powered hydrofoil boats. It is totally possible for this to be solar powered. Of course you would want batteries as well. Most boats sit still 6 days a week.

Here's the manufacturers answer: "Yes, battery on board of db-20, and all the solar boats. But the challenge during the 3 day’s race events is that is NOT allowed is to load the battery by shore power, only loading by solar panels!"

And I have found this: "Those panels either convert solar power directly to an electric motor (4 kW/5.4 hp), or store it in a lithium-ion battery; the battery management system can assist the pilot in determining ideal speed. It is also possible for the V20 to run entirely on the sun’s energy and recharge the battery at the same time."

@@wuhrmannenterprises7371 Thanks for the info. In regards to the last statement about being able to run entirely off solar and even charge the battery at the same time, I wonder if that means being able to generate enough power to lift on the hydrofoils or just cruise slowly. I just ask because I've played around myself and know it takes a lot of solar panels to be able to even operate a 55 lb thrust trolling motor at full power, let alone a motor capable of pushing those boats to liftoff speed.
