I have the newest model of The ASSC. Love it. I live in the desert so I use solar cooking almost exclusively. I have a Sun Oven, A UGLI Hybrid, and two big ones that I made out of stainless steel cooler cabinets. I really love the ASSC though simply because its so portable, and because I am up before dawn and outside (am a farmer) - I can start the ASSC as soon as the beautiful sun peeks over the horizon. If you put a paver stone under the trivet, it won't blow away.

It is so wonderful when I can come across the rare REAL talks about items. I value honest info so much, especially in this day and age where information can be driven more by personal interests (money gain, making connections, etc) than by a real interest to provide the truth. I have thought about solar ovens, both for home use and for camping, so this is good to know. Especially since any camping use would require something that could take a bit of a beating and still do it's job!

Great video. Thank you. I'm not a prepper or off the grid or anything.. I live in a major city actually... But I just thought the idea of a solar cooker was brilliant, and I figured it could come in handy in case of an emergency, like a hurricane, or a power outage. I think everybody has experienced a power outage in their life. And I just happened to have picked the all season solar cooker like the one you're showing in the video. So God brought me to the right one! And I'm glad you created this video to explain the differences between them, because I have seen all of those different solar cookers and I didn't know which one was the best. The main reason why I went with the all season was mostly because of the fact that it can use sunlight from sunrise to sunset whereas most other cookers it's mostly only in the middle of the day that you can use it. And I've still never used my cooker! I thought about cooking a chicken or or something, like I saw someone do online, I start to check it out because I'm afraid I'm going to spend money on the food and do the preparation and everything and then screw it up somehow. But now that the hurricane is about to plow through America I may end up needing to use it sooner than I thought. So thanks for the video much appreciated.

I love my Sun Oven and use it often to cook all sorts of deliciousness: beans, rice, soups, etc. I've even baked bread on a 15F day in January with a couple feet of snow on the ground. Once, though, it cartwheeled across the backyard with my beautiful half-cooked stew inside. In a windy climate, tie it down. You can't say the following, but I can. Daniel 1:12 - Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. Psalm 113:3 - From the rising of the sun to its setting The name of the LORD is to be praised.

You can make your own gigantic parabolic solar dish reflector cheaply with heavy aluminum foil. You can tape the pieces together or use glue. Coat the back with the Great Stuff insulation foam. It dries stuff.

I love my sun ovens. My only "problem" with them is during the winter, we rarely have enough sunshine in W. Michigan to use it effectively. (Using the sun in Michigan can be challenging!) But it works wonderfully when we DO have sun -- I love to use them instead of heating the kitchen up with the oven/stove in the summer. I'm surprised you can control / regulate the temperature enough to incubate yogurt or dehydrate things -- never tried that. Huh! I think mine would get too hot or the temp would fluctuate too much.

So I don’t know since this video was made I think there is been quite a bit more solar ovens. The design does not look complex at all. You can make your own. I have an American Sun oven. You can cook your around all day in it as long as it’s in the sun. So that would be three meals a day. The only inconvenience I have is I would have to cook in my front yard to make breakfast. For now I don’t feel like making breakfast in it anyways so not a big deal.

Thanks! You sold me on this. I stack the 4qt bowls they recommend with 3 qt on top. When I surround the whole thing with 6 RV reflective shades (the kind that fold into thin circles when done) the temp raises 100° F. Baked bread at 360° F even on a cloudy day. Thanks again, it was worth the price.

The cooking surface size like burner surfaces. Does it work with cast iron Dutch ovens? How about working with vertical can roasters?
@JayWandersOut
7 жыл бұрын
It could work with cast iron but it will take longer to get it heated up initially since it takes a lot of energy to heat the all that metal. You'd want to heat the pan before adding food as well since if you put food in at the same time it'll sit in the danger temperature zone longer. The advantage is if the sun gets covered by clouds it'll still stay hot for longer as well. Pros and cons to everything. Every solar oven retailer however recommends using the thin enamel pots though so I'd stick with their recommendation.

The evacuated tube cookers come into their own at higher latitudes where we have less sunlight available and need more insulation. I'm in the UK and we were able to cook bread in December using one of these, when a sun oven or panel cooker wouldn't work effectively.
