The Hot Mod seems more saturated with a little more gain, while the V2 is a little lower output, but tighter as you said. The Hot Mod definitely reminds me of that old Stuck Mojo sound for obvious reasons. EDIT: I just noticed you said the gain boost toggle wasn't activated. Probably explains the difference. Definitely would prefer the V2 in this case.

Thank you so much for doing this comparison! I've been wanting to hear what these LT V2 mods sound like directly compared to an original Soldano HotMod. I'm convinced that I want to purchase one, not so much that it sounds better, more so that it does sound just as good as the Soldano HotMod which I've used for years. As you said, the triple triode tube that the Hotmod uses are getting harder to come by because I don't believe anyone is manufacturing new ones, particularly the the higher gain, 6C10 triple triode tube.

V2 sounds a little clearer on its own compared to the original, but it also sounds like it has a tiny little less gain so this is probably what I am hearing, other than that, super similar and in a full mix, it's negligible. Nice comparison vid again Lasse!

may have less gain. But if you flick the little toggle switch to the up position you get more gain. On the down position its the lower setting.

Hey Lasse, hopefully you check out this comment/question: but have you tried either of these on your JCM 900 SLX? I know the Hot Mod V2 is compatible with that amp, so considering it already has an extra gain stage tube and this adds ANOTHER gain stage, ive wondered how far it can go?

That's sweet. I'd love to see if a Krank Revolution would benefit from the V2. When I had a couple Krank amps, my only problem was lack of gain. I didn't like using OD pedals with them either because the low end is already so tight and lean.
@eds4754
4 жыл бұрын
It may be worth checking if your amp needs a service.... I’ve owned a couple of Krank’s (still have a revolution) and I find almost the opposite - it gets very high gained very quickly, almost like it already has an additional gain stage to a 2203. I find that it also benefits from a tubescreamer style boost just to tighten up the lows as it can be a bit loose without any pedals. I’m not sure these will directly work with other amps either as they’re very specifically designed for these circuits.... A good service/check up/new valves on the krank would probably work out cheaper and get you the results you want though!

This has me really interested, and going to their website and seeing that they make a version for the Studio Classic (which I have) makes me even more interested, but a quick question -- my favorite tones out of the Studio Classic generally come from running the master volume really high (about 8) and the preamp gain somewhat lower (usually around 5-6), with a boost in front. Will this mod still deliver a good sound with the MV cranked? Also, if I turn the gain down, how would it sound in comparison to the unmodded amp -- similar, or would the gain take on a different character?
@donbriggs6687
4 жыл бұрын
I have this mod in my Studio Classic. I play mostly thrash. This is a gain monster. But I run mine with low master volume. When I had my master on 9 preamp on 6 it was pretty old school thrash with no boost in front.
@LegendaryTones
4 жыл бұрын
cynicanal111 The question about delivering good sound is subjective. But as you know, when you turn up the master, you start to add compression from the output tubes. Think of the preamp control as the majority of the gain/crunch and the master volume if turned up brings in added low end and a “spongy” type compression. You’ll still have the added gain stage with the HMV2 which is based in the preamp for additional crunch. But again, the sound is personal. If it’s something you want to try and it doesn’t work for you, I gladly accept returns. Happy customers are more important than just making $$.

@@guitarexpert2245 Oh hell yes. I went from classic crunch to thrash metal with this mod. Exodus gain thrash. This is with NO boost in front of the amp. Before this mod I was trying everything to get more gain from the sc800 (as I love there character). This has been better than everything. But you will basically lose the ability to clean up with the guitar volume.

@@LasseLammert Hey Lasse, thanks for the answer... 😃 Now that I have your here, another thing I was wondering: have you tried it in your JCM 800 as well and what are your thoughts? 800 is a bit more aggressive on tap and in some examples I've heard, it was maybe a bit to much for the amp to handle. The gain seems to break up, sounded a bit harsh. In this example it sounds nice and even. So I wanted to hear if you have compared the two: The Hot Mod in the 2203 vs. JCM 800? Also... (Probably an stupid question.)😄 But if you ever considering selling the JCM 800 with vertical inputs, please let me know. 😊 Thanks mate.

@@LasseLammert hehe, I can understand why. 😄 As you know the designs in both the JMP 2203 and that particular JCM 800 is exactly the same. So it makes sense that the Hot Mod sounds equally good in both amps. I guess the best JCM 800, is in reality a Master Volume JMP 2203 eh? 😉😄 What I meant to ask you, was if you have tried it in one of the later JCM 800's? I've seen an example here on KZitem, where it didn't played very well, with the slightly different gain structure. Quite surprised actually. Considering I thought the differences, wasn't that much, between the earliest JCM 800 and later. I'm no expert though. I just don't have the opportunity to shoot out the JMP 2203 and JCM 800 horizontal inputs myself. I wonder if I might prefer the 2203 to the 800 now. Your examples have sounded much more aggressive and modern than expected. I didn't know that a Master Volume/vertical inputs 800, could sound like that. With just a little Tubescremer, or the Hot Mod. Awesome stuff! 🤘💪
